VENTILATION APPARATUS.
Application filed September 9, 191.9. Serial No. 322,671.
To all whom it may concern:
Be. it known that we, WILLIAM A. BAKER and FREDERICK A. RAMLER, citizens of the United States of America, and residing at Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, have invented new and useful Ventilation Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to ventilation, and, more particularly, to the control of foul air passages. I I
This invention has utility especially in auditorium and school-room heating installations. I

Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view showing an embodiment of the invention in a blower installation for indirect heating and ventilation of a school-room;

Fig. 4 is a part of the section on the line IVIV, Fig. 3, shown on an enlarged scale.
Motor 1 through belt 2 may operate fan 3 to draw in fresh air and drive such air under heating apparatus herein shown as furnaces 4 as a cool air supply into chamber 5, while the air rising between the furnaces 4 may enter warm air chamber 6. The air from these chambers 5 and 6 may-in its flow therefrom be controlled by damper or valve 7 having pivot mounting 8 so that this air,
controlled as a ventilation supply of a tempered quality as desired, may flow by passage 9-and riser passage 10 through lateral opening 11 and hot air or fresh air register 12 into an auditorium or school-room 13.
At a point near the floor of this room 13 is disposed a foul air escape opening herein shown as protected by a screen 14 of sheet metal having parallel staggered cuts opened to form a mesh. This screen is mounted in a sheet metal frame having a face or front flange 15 and therefrom the edge bent to have a rear flange portion 16 opposing the flange 1'5 with the screen 14 therebetween. There is thus formed a simple effective sheet metal frame for the screen portion 14 of the foul air vent device. The folded sheet metal framing portions 15, 16, have annular flange 17 inwardly extending away from the screen ortions 14. Along the sides this annular angel? terminates in a reverse bend 18 engaging a flange 19 of a housing 20 for the ends of pins 21 extending through openings 22 in the side flanges 17. These pins 21 back of the screen portions 14 have loosely mounted thereon vanes 23 having the sides concave towards the screen 14. The lower free portions of these vanes 23 shown as of light metal and preferably of aluminum carry a reverse flange 24 to pinch .therebetween apacking or felt 25 as a sound deadening device. Accordingly, in the free falling of these vanes 23 toward the succeeding lower vane at its bearing 21 or against the lower portion of the flange 15 with the screen 14 therebetween, there is an effectual sound deadening. The series of these vanes 23 constitute a closure and together comprise an automatic gravity controlled louver back of the screen opening 14 for readily admitting air flow from the school-room 13, but definitely and automatically positively checking or precludingflow of air from the foul air vent 26 back into the room 13.
This simple installation is of great efficiency in the control ofventilation systems especially during the heating season. If the stack from the heating plant be in the same building from which the foul air vent arises, there may be on occasion drafts or windy days which would tend to blow air or smoke down the vent shaft for the foul air. This is positively precluded in the apparatus of 7 up-draft of the foul air vent will not open the louver so that there may not be a loss of heat-ing air from the school-room when the blower is not on. Accordingly, at once the fan 3 starts, the louver 23 opens to care for the free circulation and removal of foul air from the room 13 being heated. Should a window be open to give ventilation to the school-room, the louver at once closes and the blower or fan operates in the usual way and there is a freshening of the air of the room with no interference whatever in this automatically controlled ventilation system. hen the fan is shut down at night, there may be normal radiationthrough the warm air flue 10 to maintain the room 13 warm because there is no warm air escaping through the louver 23.
This automatic control device is compact and simple, in a neat structure as herein shown having the screen with the aluminum l-ouvers 23 mounted in the sheet metal frame as a unit therewith. It is sightly, su-bstan tial, light, and efficient.
l/Vhat is claimed and desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a structure providing a room having a foul air passage from near the lower portion of the room, a foul air vent control device for said passage including a screen, a frame for the screen providing bearings disposed 03116 above thevother, parallel bars in said bearings, louvers swingably mounted by said bars each louver being concave on the side thereof toward said room and having its lower freeend provided with a packing extending as to intermediate louvers to contact the louver therebelow beyond the axis of the bearing of. such lower louver whereby the closing of an upper louver tends to urge closed the louver therebelow.
2'. In a structure providing a room having a foul air passage near the lower porflange having openings therethrough providing bearings disposed one above the other, parallel rods in said bearings, balanced l'ouvers, swingably mounted on said rods and disposed for fully closing said throat, each louver being concave on the side thereof toward the roomand having its lower free end contacting with the upper portionof the louver therebelow and folded to form a channel, and sound deadening packing fixed in said channel.
