Description

J. CAV E.
Leggings.
Patented Aug. 11,1874.
YHE GRAPHIC CO. FHDTDLITH.39& 4I PARK PLACE, N-Y.
'UNITEDV STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES CAVE, oE oANToN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASsIeNon To EIMSELE AND JAMES ALLEN, or SAME PLAoE.
|MPRovEMEN'r IN Lecc-rimes.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,019, dated August 1.1, 18i'4; applicationled June 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES CAVE, of Canton, inthe county of Norfolk and Stateof Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Knit Leggings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in WhichlFigure l is a plan representing a knit legging with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section on the line w x of Fig. 1.
Leggings have ordinarily been made of leather or cloth, open at their sides for convenience in putting them on, or removing them from the legs of the wearer, and leggings have also been knit from woolen yarn made seamless, or their sides have been'closed by means of a s eam, the elasticity of the yarn admitting of their being readily drawn on or off.
To provide an elastic vknit legging which shall present the same finished appearance as an open legging, with one side overlapping the other, is the object of my invention, which consists of a knit legging provided with a separate and independent strip secured to one of its sides, so as to resemble the flap or lapped over edge of an open legging.
` To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proeeed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
i In the said drawings, A represents a ladys legging knit from ivoolen yarn, and closed throughout its length excepting at its top and bottom. To one side of the legging is secured a narrow strip, c, of knit fabric, made in a single piece separate` from the legging, the strip being secured along its front edge, 5, thereto, by crochetin g or sewin g, the rear edge of the strip being stitched down upon the legging at points b, outside of which are secured buttons c, which may be dispensed with, if desired.
The strip a, may be knit in any ornamental design, and may be of any color or colors, so
as to form a contrast with the body of the legging, the iinish and general appearance of which is thus greatly improved, and this strip is made of sufficient length to extend around the open top ofthe legging, towhich it is also secured by stitching oiq crocheting, thus forming an ornamental trimming, which may, however, be omitted, if desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a closed knit legging, A, having a separate strip or flap, a, attached thereto on one side, substantially as described and shown, and for the purpose set forth.
Witness my hand this 25th day of June7 JAMES CAVE.
