The free end 24 of the finger ,18 engages the surface of the barrel with sufiicient spring tension to hold the side 23' in close engagement with the surface of the barrel or casing A directly adjacent and against the shoulder 15. The clip B is formed of spring material to give suflicient resiliency to the finger 18 to allow it to be forced over the edge of a persons pocket without distorting its shape.

The embossed portion 14 engages the inner edges of the sides 20 and the end'23 while the shoulder 25 formed at the base of the tongue 19 engages the shoulder 16. The ends and sides of the embossed portion 14 serve as shouldersto assist in holding the clip B against free transverse or longitudinal movement.

To remove the clip B from the casing the side 23 is raised above the shoulder 15 by inserting a thin instrument under the edge of the same and prying upward in a direction toward the end 24 of the clip. When the side 23 is elevated above the shoulder 15 the clip will slide easily off of the embossed portion 14'and release the tongue 19. The tongue 19 lies in a recess 26 and against the inner surface of the embossed portion 14 out of the chamber 11 to leave a free passage for the reception of thejoperating'mechanismor inner parts of the pencil wh ch are not illustrated in the drawing.

The use of mechanical pencils has recently become very extensive and it has been found that the attaching clips generally used thereon arevery apt to become bent, broken or injured in a manner so as not to properly hold'the pencil. Many times it is necessary to send the pencils back tothe factory to be repaired when the clips get out of order. With my construction the dealer can readily remove the old clip or the remaining por tions thereof and attach a new clip in a very short time without any material inconvenience to the user of the pencil.

For these reasons the construction and side 23 out of engagement with the shoulder 15 yet in use the clip will not come oil by accident or have a tendency to become loose, particularly as it is held by spring tension locked to the casing or barrel.

have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the structure 'which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the drawings are only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those set forth within the scope of the following claims.

1. A clip in combination with a pencil casing, a spring engaging arm formed on said clip, an opening formed in said clip, an

embossed portion in said casing adapted to fit' said opening, a holding tongue adapted to engage said casing and a locking shoulder adapted to lock said tongue and clip to saidcasing when said embossed portion enters said opening to hold said clip against longitudinal or transverse movement.

2. A pencil attaching means comprising, a casing, openings formed in said casing, an embossed portion formed between said openings a member formed from spring material having an engaging finger, an opening formed in said member adapted to en gage the sides of said embossed portion and a locking tongue adapted toremovably lock said-member into engagement with said em; bossed portion, to hold said member against longitudinal or transverse play.

A holding clip in combination with a pencil casing, an outwardly embossed portion formed on said casing, a shoulder formed on QItlIQPGnClOfSfllCl embossed portion, a spring clip having an opening adapted to fit about the sides of said embossed portion, a tongue formed on said clip and an opening formed in said casing adapted to freely receive said tongue to allow said clip tobe moved longitudinally and placed into engagement with said shoulders and embossed portion to lock said clip to said casing under spring tension.
