Be it known that I, HENRY, SHAPIRO, a
. citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Brushes, of which the following `is a specifi? cation.
My invention relatesto brushes, more particularly to tooth brushes of the .type in'I which the paste is fed to the bristles from the handle. The object is to provide a tooth brush of simple construction having paste feeding means which will not clog thebristles with paste, and to provide a brush handle which willreadily receive a new supply l. V of paste from an ordinary tube or be wholly removable as a paste cartridge.`

:threaded part. 6, a counter-bore 7, and` an opening 8. A collar 9 is rotatably mounted on the bearing 4 between the flange 5 andv the end of the head and is provided with a' knurled part 10-and a threaded partll for receiving 'one end 12 of a tubular or hollow handle 13 which has pressed therein longitudinal ribs 14.v The other end 15 ofv the handle 'is threaded to receive a -knurled cap 16 having a recess 17 for receiving the end of the feed screw and an opening 18 to serve as a passage f or air to and from the housing. A threaded piston 19 travels on the threaded part 6v of the feed screw and is provided with notches 20 in its circumference for reeliving thelongitudinal ribs l14 on the hantively to the handle and the fee screw, slid- .ably keys it to the handle but holds it in threaded engagement with the feed screw.- Thus by turning the handle, the iston will travel on the threaded vpart otP the feed vscrew and force the paste out of thehandle.
A delivery tube 21 is slidable within the bristle Vhead and the feed screw and has one end provided` with a needle point 22 and an-v outlet 23 and the other end provided with an enlarged part 24, slidable within counterl bore 7, and an inlet 25. To pull the delivery tubeinto this position or push it back into the bristle head, I provide a lug 26 secured to the de' livery tube and ada ted to travel within a slot 27 in the bristle ead.
To prevent dust or other material vfrom accumulating yon needle point 22, when the tube is in its closed position, I provide a trap doorv 28 of' any suitable construction to close the opening as shown in Figures 3 and 4.
To use 'the brush, delivery tube 21 is pulled out ofthe bristle head until the enlarged part'24 abuts the end of counterbQre 7. The handle 13 isl then rotated to force paste out of opeiiin 23, and said tube 21 is slid back into the bristle head. During this movement the paste around outlet 23 will be scrapedffromfthe needle point by the bristles as it passes therethrou h and the inlet 25 will leave' opening 8 in t e feed screw and cut o f communication therewith. After 'the delivery tube has entered the bristle head, the trap door 28 wi11 close behindthe needle point and the brush is vthen ready for use.

liveryA tube within `the feed screw,` the airdisplaced'within the feed screw by the 'dei livery tube is permitted to pass out through opening 18 in the cap. i To replenish the paste supply with an ordinarytube, cap 16 is removed'from the ioo y handle and the handle turned, opposite to the feeding direction, until the iston comes .out of the handle. The handle 1s then filled -with paste from an ordinary tube and the l from the threaded part of the feed screw.
. and hence The cartridge which is similar to the handle it then screwed onto the collar. The other end of the cartridge, which is provided with a cap similar to cap 16, is removed and the piston screwed onto the feed-screw. The cap is -thenI replaced and the cartridge is ready for use. l
A brush constructed as above described will not clog the bristles with paste, is simple in construction, and cheap to manufacture. l While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various partsmay be changed without de arting from the spirit thereof,
do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, vbut consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and altera-tions :1s-fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.

A brush including a bristle head; a tubular feed screw mounted stationary on said bristle head and having aside opening and a cylindrical.. bearing portion; a hollow handle mounted on said head with means rotatably engaging said bearing portion; a delivery tube within the head and feed screw yand adapted to communicate` with .said opening; and means on said feed screw actuated -by rotation of said handle for forcing material from the handle through. the delivery tube..

9. A brush including a bristle head; a hollow handle rotatably mounted thereon; a
tubular feed screw mounted on the head and projecting within the handle and having an opening; a delivery tube slidable in said head and said feed screw and having a pointed head with an outlet movable into said bristles and having a side opening near the other end, the opening in the delivery tube being adapted to communicate with the opening in the feed screw when the delivery tube is slid to open position and cut oil communication .therewith when slid to closed position; and means for forcing material through ther delivery tube.

A` brush including a bristle head; a tubular feed screw mounted stationary thereon and vprovided with a bearing portion and a side opening; a collar rotatably lmounted on said bearing portion; a hollow handle having one end removably secured to said collar; a. cap removably attached to the other end of said handle and having an air vent communicating with the interior of the feed screw; a delivery tube slidable within the feed. screw and having a side opening adapted to communicate with vsaid openlng when slid to open position and cut olf communication therewith when slid to closed position, and a piston slidably keyed to said handle and threaded to engage and move alongsaid'eed screw by rotation of said handle for forcing. material through the delivery tube.
