. BURNER FOR HA D LANTE NS.
Application filed April 13, 1823. SeriaINo. 631,806. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. ROLFES, a citizen of the United States of America, a resident of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burners for Hand Lanterns, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact descriptiomreference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. o I
This invention relates generally to improvements inlamp or lantern burners, and particularly to a burner intended for use in a hand lantern of the type used by persons engaged in the operation of railroad trains, the main object of the invention being to produce a burner whichis provided with means whereby oil within the burner is prevented from escaping from said burner through the openings in the wall thereof through which the wick-operating "stem of saidburner extends.
'As is well known, certain 'ofthepersons engaged in operating a railroad train are provided with hand lanterns which are used the burner, andwhen it was desiredto elevate or lower said wick it was only necessarytorotate'saidstem.
In giving signals with a hand lantern pro-.
vided with a burner of the type used prior to this invention, it quite frequently happened that the oil within the lantern was agitated to such extent that some of said oil found its way through the openings in the wall of the burner through which the wick-adjusting stem extended, and the presence of thisoil outside of theburner'was a source of danger as there was always a liability that said oil might be ignited by the flame within the lantern.
plication is so constructed and arranged that aperture 3.
oil is prevented from passing through the single opening through which the wick-adjusting stem extends whereby the objections recited above are eliminate i 4 i With theforcgoing' and'otherobjects in view, the invention comprises the novel'construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more, specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying draw ings, wherein is shown the preferred em bodiment of the invention. However, it, is s to be understood that the invention comprehends changes, variations and modifications which come within the scope of vtheclaims .70
hereunto appended. 1 Fig. I is a side elevation of, a .hand' 1antern provided with my improved burner, a portion of said lantern beingbroken away to show said'burner, and the bail of'the lantern'being-broken away to utilize space.
Fig. II is anenlarged horizontal section through the burner shown in Fig.1..
Fig. III is a section on line III-III of Fig. 1-1. I
Fig. IV is a view partly in verticalsection and partly inelevationof the burner. section on line VV of Fig. V is a Fig. IV. a a A In the drawing, Adesignates a hand-lan tern which comprises the usual frame B, oil I font C,hood-D, chimney E and bail F, all of said parts being constructed in the ordinary way and assembled in-the usual mannerto produce a hand lantern of the type used'formany years. The oil font C is provided with a "cover plate G which is rovided withacent ral' aperture adapte to receive the burner The burner H, disclosedin-the present application, comprises a body portion 1 in 'the form of a cylindrioal" she1l,; and a cover 3 and formed in the cover'member 2 is a similar aperture 4 in alinement with the Arranged vertically through the body portion of the burner and extending upwardly therefrom is a wick-guiding tube 5, said tube being soldered or otherwise secured in place in the openings 3 and 4, so that a passageway is provided through said I burner through which the wick W passes.
' r The burner disclosed the present ap- Arranged transversely of the body portion lot the burner is a wick-adjusting' prevented from portion, a wick passingthrough said body portion, a stem for adjusting said Wick, said stem being extended through an opening in the-wall of said body portion and projected outwardly therefrom, said opening in the wall of said body portion being of much greater diameter than said stem,v ahollow member fixed to the outside face of the wall of said body portion adjacent to said opening and surrounding a portion of said stem, the inside diameter of said hollow member being approximately the same as said opening, and packing material within said hollow member whereby oil is prevented from passing through said opening,
6. A lantern burner comprising a body portion, a wick passing through said body portion, a stem for adjusting said wick,
said stein being extended through an opening in the wall of said body portion and projected outwardly therefrom, a stem-supporting member secured to the wall of said body" portion at the inside face thereof and having end portions which embrace said stem, packing material interposed between said wall of said body portion and an end portion of said stem-supporting member,
said packing material being located adjacent to saidopening in the wall of said body portion, an elongated hollow member comprising a plurality of parts secured together and secured to the outside face of the wall of said body portion adjacent to said opening therein and surrounding a por-- tion of said stem, and packing material within said elongated hollow member whereby oil is prevented from passing through said opening. 7
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I signature. I
