EDWARD BRUNZ-IOFF, 1's nanometer; cine, sss en'on meanness ten-terse reruns container, or omoxnnara onto, a eenr'oaerron'or' onto;
DISPLAYiAND VENDING APPARATUS;
Application filed November 2, 1923. Serial o 672,433.
To a?! wjT/tO-ZM it may concern:
Be it kn an that I Enwnno BRUNHOFF, a citizen of the United States residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display and V ending Afparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvement in display and vending apparatus. One of its objects is to provideimproved means to display for sale a plurality of original packages,'as for instance packages of tobacco or cigarettes. Another object is to provide improved means to display the ad vertising matter on the original packages and to provide other contrasting advertising matter. Another object is to provide in proved means to retain the several orig- 5 inal packages in their assembled and relative positions and to prevent unauthorized detachment of any of the original packages or their accidental displacement. Another object is to provide improved means where by the advertising matter on the front and top of the original packages is housed by means of transparent coveringmembers or equivalent means adapted to display the advertising matter to advantage and to be readily kept clean and to' keep the exterior of the original packages bright and clean, Another object is to provide means to hold and display either single or plural rows of original packages and to hold and display original packages having either paper or n'ietal containers. My invention also comprises certain details of form and com.- bination and arrangement of components all of which will be fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, in which 1 Fig. 1 is a perspective view of one type of my improved apparatus adapted to hold and display a single row of original contaiuers. I V
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1,- provided with a lid member having a panel of transparent material.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lid member of Fig. 2 detached.
Fig. -1- is a perspective view of a sheet metal lid member adapted to be used in place of the lid member shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 55 of Fig. 1.
Fig; 6 is a sectional detail showing a n'iodification of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a front elevation illustrating a modified type of apparatus adapted to hold two parallel rows of -origin-alcontainers.
Fig. 8 is a plan ofthe apparatus shown in '4'. v i
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of.one of the front advertising and protecting plates of Fig. 7 detached.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred embodiments of my invention; as shown in Figs. 1,, 2, 3i, and 5 a sheet metal frame is provided with a front having channels 16 to detachably support a front advertising plate 17 preferably of plate glass or other transparent material-upon the lower portionof w'hichis painted or etched an advertisement ofthe goods 18, and through the upper portion of which plate the advertising matter 19' upon the front vof one or more of the original packages 20 is displayed, a
A plurality of the original packages 20 arranged in one or more rows and one behind another in the rows are mounted in a shallow inclined receptacle 21, so as to exposethe advertising matter 22,- on the side, edges of the original packages 20. The
rear wall 24v of the receptacle 21 preferably extends above the upper edge of the side walls of said receptacle and is provided with hinge eyes 25 by means of Which a lid member 26 is hinged to the rear wall 24.; The lid 26 is of angular cross section so as to embrace theup'per portion of the rear packages 20 and to extend forwardlyacross' the top of all of the ori 'in-al packages 20 to prevent any one ofthe original packages being detached and removed from the re ceptacle without first lifting the lid 26. 'At the front edge of the lid 26 is a latch member 27 'adapted to engage over the upper edge of the front plate 19 to retain the lid in its closed position with a limited amount of tension so as to require the receptacle or some part thereof to be held down with one hand while the other hand is employed to lift the lid. 1 also: preferably; employ a spring 28 or equivalent means-tending to resiliently hold the lid; in closed position I also preferably attacha hell or equiVa-, lent member 30 adapted to be actuated by means of a lever or projection 31 attached to the lid so as to sound an alarm each time the lid'is opened to detach one of the original packages, all of which are designed to prevent the original packages becoming too readily detached from the receptacle by accident, or detached by unauthorized persons without attracting the attention of the person in charge of the store. As illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 onlya single row of original packages is employed. Also the spective original packages in the row 01'' rows. As illustrated in Fig. 5, the partitions 38 are omitted and the original packages are arranged together face to face in a single compartment.
In Figs 7 and 8 I have illustrated an ap-- paratus adapted to contain and display a plurality of rows of original packages, as for instance two rows of the same type and grade of original packages, two rows containing different grades of the same type of original packages, or two rows each containing an independent type, of original package. rate frontplates and 41 are provided and are detachable and interchangeable whereby the display apparatus or either sidethereof may be employed at will for different types of original package by changing the front plate 40 and 41 or either one thereof. As illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8 the lid 42 is relatively narrow so as to engage over only a portion of each original package andto thereby as shown in Fig. 8, expose to view the forepart of the advertising matter 44 on the end of the left hand row of original packages and closely adjacent-thereto the latter part of the same advertising matter 45 upon the end of the right hand row of original packages. The lid 42 is preferably ,provided with a latch member 46 to engage the upper edge of the front plates 40 and 41, and also with a spring 47 to hold the lid 42 yieldingly in closed position, and is also preferably provided with an alarm sounding element 30 corresponding to the alarm sounding element 30 of Figs. 1 and 2.
The apparatus herein shown and described is capable of considerable modification within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What 'I claim is: 1. A display and vending apparatus comadvertising As illustrated in Fig. 7 two sepaprising a supporting frame having a recap tacle to receive a plurality of original packages in a row one in rear 0f another and to present and utilize the advertising matter upon the front of the packages for display purposes, a detachable advertising plate having a transparent section mounted in guides upon the front of said supporting frame, and a lid member extending from rear to front of said supporting frame transversely across the top of said original packages to retain said original packages in position. p
2. A display and vending apparatus comprising asupporting frame having a recep tacle to receive a plurality of original pack ages in a row one 1n rear of another and to present and utilize the advertising matter upon the front of the packages for display purposes, a detachable advertising plate having a transparent section mounted 'in guides upon the front of said supporting frame, and a lid member extending from rear to front of said supporting frame transversely across the'top of said original packages to retain said original packages in position, and means carried by said supporting frame to sound an alarm when said lid is lifted to detach one of said original packages.
3. A display and vending apparatus comprising a supporting frame having a plurality of receptacles to receive a plurality of original packages one in rear of another in independent rows and to present and utilize the advertising matter upon the front of the original packages, a plurality of advertising plates each having a transparent section through which to disclose the advertising matter upon the front of said original packages detachably mounted in guides upon the front of said supporting member, a lid member extending transversely across the top of said original packages to retain.
the original packages in position.
4. A display and vending apparatus com prising a supporting frame having a receptacle to receive a plurality of original packages in a row one in rear of another and to present and utilize the advertising matter upon the front of the packages for display purposes, a detachable advertising plate having a transparent section mounted in guides upon the front of said supporting frame, and a lid member extending from rear to front of said supporting frame transversely across the top of said original packages to retainsaid original packages in position, and means to-yieldingly retain said lid member in closed position relative to said supporting frame.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature.
EDWARD BRUNHOFF.
