TO (IN whom it may concern Be it known that I, RUnoLr Ennsr TAG- NER, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Karlstad, in the Kingdom of Sweden, have invented a new and useful Iniproveme-nt in Coverings for Rollers for Pressing Apparatus and the like (for which an application for patent has been filed in Sweden April 30, 1920, Patent No. 5%,768), of which the following is a specification.
In the pressing out of liquid'from fibrous substances, for instance water from a sheet of paper pulp, between press rollers, press plates and the like, it has been found that with the linings or intermediate means heretofore used between said rollers or the like, such as cloths, grates, or cords of flax, hemp, metal wire, or the like, a satisfactory removal of the liquid pressed out is not obtained. Furthermore, such linings are subjected to great wear owing to the pressing and become therefore rapidly spoiled.
Attempts have therefore previously been made to obtain more favourablc results by pressing with rollers provided in their" surfaces with grooves, slots, notches, or the like. Such grooves or the like in the surfaces of the roller are, however, not very durable, particularly when pressing out acid liquids, but will soon require to be renewed which is effected by turning off the roller and again providing the same with grooves or the like in its surface. In this manner the diameter of the roller will soon become too small, however, so that the entire roller must be discarded. It is too disadvantageous from an economical point of view to make such rollers entirely of bronze which is more capable of resistance to the corrosive action of acids than iron, because of the fact that such rollers may have a weight of up to 10 tons.
The present invention relates to a roller covering which is provided with surface channels, grooves, slots, notches, or the like, and which thus possesses the same advantages as the rollers provided with slots or the like above referred to, without havingtheir disadvantages. The roller covering is principally characterized by this that it consists of a number of parts which, in the peripheral direction, at least, of the roller, have less extension than the length of the periphery of the roller, each of said parts hav- Serial No. 444,819.
that when said parts bear against th roller,
said outer surfaces are concentric with the roller, and each of said parts having channels, grooves, slots, notches, or the like in its outer surface. By't his arrangement the advantage is primarily attained that if a part of the roller covering has become damaged it may easily be replaced by a new part, without the roller or the rest of the roller covering having to be discarded. Moreover, it is possible to make the parts of the roller covering of die castings, when as is well known, no further treatment is required, and theouter raw surface of cast iron, which is thus left on the parts, being more capabie of resistanceto acids than is even phosphor bronze, as is well known, the parts will be more durable in themselves than the turned and machined rollers above referred to.
The parts of the roller covering may be connected to each other to form a band, chain, or grate surrounding the roller, but they may of course also be attached and secured to the roller each by itself. l Vhen the parts are connected to form a band or the like, such band may have a greater length than the periphery of the roller so that it may run around the roller and a guide roller.
In the accompanying drawings a few enibodiments of the invention are illustrated by way of'example; Fig. 1 shows c liagranimatically a pressing apparatus having two rollers each of which istightly surrounded by the parts of the roller covering, which are shown connected to one another. shows a similar embodiment in which the chains or grates formed by the parts of the roller covering connected with one another, do not bear, however, against the rollers over their entire circumference, but the up per chain or grate runs over a guide roller and the lower chain or grate is freely suspended from the lower roller. Fig. shows a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 a plan view of a few parts of the roller covering, andFigs; 5 and 6 show different cross sections, with grooves and slots, of the parts of the roller covering. Fig. 7 shows a plan view of an'assembled chain or grate. Fig. 8 shows a device for driving the chain or grate, and Fig. 9 shows means for guiding the chain or grate on theroller.
The pressing apparatus shown in Fig. 1 consists of two rollers 1 and 2 which are surrounded by a roller covering 3 according to the present invention. The various parts of the roller covering may be separately secured to the roller bodies 1 and 2, or as illustrated in the drawing, they may be connected to one another so as to form a chain or, as termed in the following description, a grate extending around the roller body and bearing against its surface. The parts 4: of the grate may have the shape illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4:, with for instance a grooved outer surface according to Fig. 5, or with deep and narrow slots in the surface according to Fig. '6. Each part 4 has such curved outer surface that when the part bears against the roller 1 or 2 said outer surface is concentric with the roller. The ends of the parts 41 are planed one in another, and pins or bolts 5 are inserted into the holes in the ends, so that an assembled grate is obtained of the appearance illustrated in Fig. 7. In order that the grates shall be securely brought along by the roller bodies 1 and 2 during their rotation, the parts 1 are provided, according to the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 41, with recesses 6 in their inner surfaces with which recesses bolts or knobs 7, see Fig. 8, 0n the outer surfaces of the roller bodies may engage. In order to maintain the grates in proper positions on the roller bodies there are provided at both ends of said bodies guide rings 8 Fig 9 slidable and secnrable on said bodies, and by means of which the grates on the two roller bodies 1 and 2 may be adjusted in relation to one another so that the grooves or slots in the grates 3 come in desired positions relatively to one another.
lVhen the sheet of material 9 is run be tween the grates 3 on the rollers 1 and 2 the liquid will be pressed from the sheet of material into the grooves or slots in the various parts of the grate, and for facilitating the I removal of the water thus pressed out there are provided suction means 10, 11 in front of the rollers in the angles between the rollers and the sheet of material. By means of scrapers 12 hearing against the roller coverings such pulp fibres may be removed which may have been brought along by the coverings or grates.
According to the embodiment shown in Fig; 2 the roller covering or grate 15 on the upper roller body 14 has a e'reater'ien gth than the periphery of the roller body, and it therefore runs over a guide roller 15 the section of which has preferably the shape of a polygon with sides corresponding to the len th of the parts or links of the grate taken between fulcra. The guide roller 15 is preferably adjustable and serves as a tightener for the grate, and simultaneously as a driving roller for the same, for which latter purpose it may be driven from the roller body 14 in such manner that the grate 13 runs with the same speed as the peripheral speed of the roller body 14;, so that the grate does not slide or slip on the roller body. Also the covering or grate 16 on the lower roller body 17 is longer than the periphery of said roller 17. If deemed suitable, the driving device described with reference to Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 8, or some other similar driving device, may of course be used between the grates 13 and 16 and the roller bodies 1 1 and 17. These latter members may also be provided with guide rings 8 of the kind illustrated in Fig. 9. Also in this embodiment there are provided suction means 18 and 19 for drawing off the liquid pressed out. In order to maintain the grates free from liquid and other matter L there are provided tubes 20, 21 transversely over the grates, by means of which tubes air is blown against the grates. Depending upon the material being pressed, water may be introduced into said tubes 20, 21, or special tubes may be provided for water, gas or steam. The bodies and liquid thus removed from the grates are collected in the troughs 22, 23.
The invention is of course not limited to the embodiments illustrated. As stated above, the parts of the roller covering may be separately secured to the roller body, for in. stance in the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1. The parts may ofcourse also in other respects be made in other shapes, and be connected with each other in other ways, than those illustrated in the drawings. The guiding device for the grates on the roller bodies may also be constructed in other 1113111191,}111d the driving device may consist of other projections, recesses, teeth, or the like engaging one another.
I claim:
1. A roller covering for rollers for pressing apparatus and the like consisting of a number of unyielding metallic parts which in the peripheral direction at least of the roller have less extension than the length of the periphery of the roller, each of said 3? parts having its outer surface curved in such manner that when said parts bear against the roller said outer surfaces are concentric with the roller, and each of said parts having slots in its outer surface.
2. A roller covering as claimed in claim 1, in which the parts of the covering surround and bear against the roller over its entire circumference.
8. A roller covering for rollers for pressing apparatus and the like, consisting of a number of unyielding metallic parts which in the peripheral direction at least of the roller have less extension than the length of the periphery of the roller, each of said parts having its outer surface curved in such manner that when said parts bear against the roller said outer surfaces are concentric with the roller, and each of said parts having slots in its outer surface, said parts being connected to each other to form a continuous grate surrounding the roller.
4. In a pressing apparatus, the combination of a roller, a roller covering consisting of a number of unyielding metallic parts which in the peripheral direction least of the roller have less extension than the length of the periphery of the roller, each of said parts having its outer surface curved in such manner that when said parts bear against the roller said outer surfaces are concentric with the roller, and each of said parts having slots in its outer surface, said parts being connected to each other to form a continuous grate surrounding said roller and having a greater length than the periphery of said roller, and a guide roller for said grate.
5. In a pressing apparatus, the combination of a roller, a roller covering consisting of a number of unyielding metallic parts which in the peripheral direction at least of the roller have less extension than the length of the periphery of the roller, each of said parts having its outer surface curved in such manner that when said parts bear against the roller said outer surfaces are concentric with the roller, and each of said parts having slots in its outer surface, said parts being connected to each other to form a continuous grate surrounding said roller and having a greater length than the periphery of said roller, and a guide roller for said grate, the cross section of said guide roller having the shape of a polygon with sides corresponding to the length of the parts of the grate.
6. In a pressing apparatus, the combination of a roller, a roller covering consisting of a number of unyielding metallic parts which in the peripheral direction at least of the roller have less extension than the length of the periphery of the roller, each of said parts having its outer surface curved in such manner that when said parts bear against the roller said outer surfaces are concentric with the roller, and each of said parts having slots in its outer surface, and means for effecting driving engagement beagainst the roller said outer surfaces are concentric with the roller, and each of said parts having slots in 1ts outer surface, and means for guiding said roller covering on said roller.
8. In a pressmg apparatus, the comb1nation of a roller, a roller covering consisting of a number of unylelding metallic parts which in the peripheral direction at least of the roller have less extension than the length of the periphery of the roller, each of said parts having its outer surface curved in such manner that when said parts bear against the roller said outer surfaces are concentric with the roller, and each of said parts having slots in its outer surface, and guide rings slidable and securable on said roller for guiding said roller covering,
9. In a pressing apparatus, the combination of a roller, a roller covering consisting of a number of unyielding metallic parts which in the peripheral direction at least of the roller have less extension than the length of the periphery of the roller, each of said parts having its outer surface curved in such manner that when said parts bear against the roller said outer surfaces are concentric with the roller, and each of said parts having slots in its outer'surface, and suction means for drawing off liquid from said covering.
10. In a pressing apparatus, the combination of a roller, a roller covering consisting of a number of unyielding metallic parts which in the peripheral direction at least of the roller have less extension than the length of the periphery of the roller, each of said parts having its outer surface curved in such manner that when said parts bear against the roller said outer surfaces are concentric with the roller, and each of said parts having slots in its outer surface, and means for blowing off liquid from said covering.
