IMPROVEMEN T'IN MOUNTING AND SETTING GUNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,924, dated August 11, 1874; application filed May 16,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. AVERY, of Madison Court-House, Madison county, Florida, have invented a new and Improved Game-Gun, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to spring-guns for setting to be discharged by game or by burglars; and it comprises a stand for holding the gun, with a holder and clamp for attaching the gun to the stand; also, a breech-piece of a peculiar construction, whereon the lock is mounted, adapted for attaching to any gun; and also a baiting-trigger for causing the game to fire the gun by its efforts to get the bait; and the lock is provided with means for causing it to pull hard or easy, all as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved gun, and a sectional elevation of the tripping apparatus. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the stand, taken on the line a m. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 y, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line 2 2.

A is a hollow standard having a large base, 13. 0 is a vertically-adjustable rod or shaft fitted in the hollow of stand A, for shifting up and down, and provided with a set-screw, D, for holding it at any point. E is a metal plate set edgewise in the top of the post 0 on a pivot, F, and having clamps G for fastening the barrel J of the gun to it, in the manner shown, so that the breech or handle H will rest on the base B of the stand. I is a plate forming part of the breech, and having the lock attached to it, and arranged to fit against the side of the barrel, which is attached to it by one or more clamps, K. L is a gage by which to adjust the barrel to the breech in proper relation to the hammer M. This gage consists of a small bar bent near one end at right angles, and pivoted to the plate, so that the nipple N can be set to it when it is held up in front of the hammer,'and so that it will drop below out of the way of the hammer. O is an adjusting-screw arranged with the trigger P, so as to allow it to catch in the notch of the tumbler Q more or less, which regulates the resistance to the pulling of the trigger, making it easier the less it enters the notch. To the trigger is attached a lever, B, which is connected by a string, S, with the bait-trigger T, by which it is designed that the game shall fire the gun in attempting to get the bait. This trigger is pivoted in a standard, U, in which is a latch, V, to hold the trigger when set for firing the gun, and also for holding the bait W, by which the game is to trip the trigger. This latch extends both ways beyond its notch for holding the trigger, so that on one side it trips by rising, and on the other by falling.- On the former side an arm, X, of the standard U is provided for flying game to alight upon to pull up the latch in getting the bait.
To set the gun for burglars the string S will be attached to a door or Window, or around or across a passage, and the standard U, trigger T, and bait-latch will not be used. I
The clamp for fastening the lock-plate to the barrel may pass through holes in the, plate and under the barrel, instead of over the barrel and plate.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The standard A, platform B, adjustable rod 0, plate E, and clamps Gr, combined with a gun, substantially as specified.
2. The breech-plate I, having the gun-lock attached to it, attached to the gun-barrel by one or more clamps, K, in the manner described.
3. The combination of lever B, string S, trigger T, and bait-latch V with the trigger P of the'gun-lock, substantially as specified.
