UNITED STATES RICHARD J, PARISIAN, OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN, A'SSIGNOR TO WIGGIN- PATENT OFFICE.
TON COMPANY, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
POTENTIAL INDICATOR.
Application filed October 25,- 1920. Serial No. 419,504,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD J. PARIsIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Potential Indicators, of which the following is a specifi cation. 7
This invention relates to improvements in potential indicators.
The objects of the invention are to provide a simple, convenient and compact device for testing a potential and determining substantially thevoltage of both the alternating and the direct current by the same instrument.
Objects which pertain to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
' 'I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described-in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Fig. I is a detail elevation view of. the instrument substantially full size.
Fig. II is an enlarged detail longitudinal sectional elevation taken on line 2-2 of Fig. I, looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section line.
In the drawing similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Considering the numbered parts. of the drawing, 1 is the outer case provided with a closed. cap 2 atom end and a cap 3 with an open center at the opposite end, which are retained in place by suitable pins.
Centrally disposed within the case, which is cylindrical in form, is a solenoid coil wound upon spool 4 of fiber, having heads 5, 5 which are retained in proper position by suitable pins 6 driven through the outer casing in proximity thereto The coil is made up of enameled magnet wire 7 having a central lead 8 and an outer lead 9 which are connected to flexible conductor cords like lamp cards 10, 10 which are provided with suitable terminals 11, 11 indicated in conventional form in Fig. I.
WVithin the solenoid coil is a solenoid core 12 of soft iron which is providedwith a head 13 which is held normally extended by coil spring 14 interposed between the voltage requiring a different scale from the direct current. The alternations are indicated by vibrations of the current which results in a hum and in a visible oscillation or vibration of the indicator point.
I have shown in improved'potentiabindicator in preferre form, and desire to state that other insulating material may be substituted for the fiber and that otherdetails will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art. I
The scale might be otherwise arranged and connectechc as for instance, it might be disposed upon the end. However, I have shown the same in the preferred form and as I do not care to claim it in detail in'other form,
I have illustrated it.in but one form. I desire to claim the structure specifically as illustrated, and also broadly, as appears from the appended claims. I
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'z' 1. In a potential indicator, the combination of acase comprising a cylindrical body and caps detachably secured in the ends thereof, said body and caps being of insu lating material, a solenoid core fitted within said body and supported in aspaced relation to both'ends thereof providing top and bottom chambers, said body having a longitudinal slot opening into said top chamber, a core loosely reciprocating within said coil' and projecting into said top chamber and provided at its outer end with a finger-like pointer disposed in said slot, a coiled spring disposed on said core between the'upper end of said coil and said pointer whereby the core is yieldingly supported, the outer end of the slot constituting a stop limiting the outward movement of said core, there being a scale for'direct current disposed at one side of saidslot and a scale for alternating current disposed at the other side of said core, and flexible cords disposed through the bottom-cap and connected Within the bottom chamber to the leads of said coil.
2.. In a potential indicator, the combination of a case comprising a cylindrical body and caps detachably secured in the ends thereof, said body and caps being of insulating material, a solenoid core fitted within said body and supported in a spaced relation to'both ends thereof providing top and bottom chambers, said body having a longitudinal slot opening into said top chamber,
there being a scale at one side of said slot, a
core loosely reciprocating within said coil and projecting into said top chamber and provided at its outer end with a finger-like pointer disposed in said slot, a coiled spring disposed on said core between the upper. end
of said coil and said pointer whereby the core is yieldingly supported, the outer end of the slot constituting a stop limiting the outward movement of said core, and flexible cords disposed through the bottom cap and connect ed-within the bottom'fchamberto the leads of said coil.
3. In a potential indicator, the combination of a case comprising a cylindrical body and caps detachablysecured in the ends thereof, said body and caps being of insulating material, a solenoid core fitted within said body and supported in a spaced relation to both ends thereof providing top and bottom chambers, said body having a longitudinal slot opening into said top chamber, there being a scale at one side of said slot, a core loosely reciprocating with said coil and rojecting into said top chamber and p'rovlded at its outer end with a finger-like pointer disposed in said slot, a coiled spring resting on said coil to: yieldingly support said core, and flexible cords disposed through the bottom cap and connected within the bottom chamber to the leads of said coil.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand andseal in the presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD J. PARISIAN.
Witnesses: LUELLA G. GREENFIELD, MARGARET L. GLASGOW.
