Abstract
811,417. Liquid level indicators. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and MATTHEWS, A. July 16, 1957, No. 22523/57. Class 40 (1). A liquid-level indicator comprises at least one inductance coil contained within a non-magnetic tube which is at least partly disposed inside a container for the liquid and a magnetic member disposed outside the tube and rigidly secured to a float disposed inside the container and surrounding the tube so as to be guided for movement along the length of the tube. The arrangement is such that variation in the level of the liquid causes movement of the float and the magnetic member, thus varying the selfinductance of at least one coil and/or the mutual inductance between a pair of coils. As shown, the magnetic member comprises an iron tube 14 surrounding the non-magnetic tube 6 containing two inductance coils 8, 9 electrically connected in series. The tube 6 which is conveniently made of an alloy of nickel, chromium and iron is provided at each end with rubber stoppers and is welded at its upper end to an aperture in the cover 2 of the container 1. The float 15 is arranged to be relatively shallow so as to minimize errors due to changes in the density of the liquid. The leads 10, 11 and 12 are connected in an electrical circuit such as that described in Specification 759,041 to obtain an indication of the level of the liquid in the drum 1.
