UNITED STATES 1,538,741 PATENT OFFICE.
GUST WILLIAM PETERSON, 0F LONG'` BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
LATHERING DEVICE.
Application led September 23, 1924. Serial No. 739,430.
shaving accessories and more particularly toy lathering devices, my object being the provision of a simple inexpensive lather spreading and beard softening device to take the place of the usual unsanitary, more expensive andfless satisfactory brushes.
lVhile'susceptible of various forms, my invention contemplates in its most simple embodiment a section of material such as sponge rubber fixed to a backing or supporting plate, the plate having provision for engagement of a handle and the rubber 'spreading element having a central cavity or opening for the reception of the soap to 12 therethrough an be. subsequently spread in the form of lather prior to shaving. Preferably thesection of sponge rubber 1s approximately semispherical in form, its nature and shape rendering the same peculiarlyeective as a beard sof.
tener during the lathering operation.
The invention is also well adapted to other forms, for instance as a fountain ap` plicator in connection with shaving cream holders, land I have fully shown the preferred form 'in the accompanying drawing wherein,
Figure 1 is a the invention,
Figure 2 is a central vertical section through the upper portion thereof, and
Figure '3 is a horizontal section taken on line 3 3 of Figure 2. 4
Referring now to these figures I have shown my invention in the form of a fountain applicatorfor a shaving creamholder in theusual flexible tubular shape as indicated at 10. The spreading element 11 is an approximately semispherical section of sponge rubber having an axial feed opening (I permanently fixed in any suitable manner upon a flat circular supporting plate 13 provided with, a central perspective view showing opening 14 to register with the feed openin of 12.
l`he plate 13 preferably has, an annular flange 15 which in this instance is crimped holding discs 16 and 17 having central openings and having their central portions spaced apart to receive therebetween a flatv shutter valve 18 shiftable'to cover or uncover the opening of disc 17 las will be plainly seen by a comparison of the full and dotted lines of Figure 3.
At one end the valve or shutter 18 has an angular rounded projection 19 movabl interfitting an opening in the disc 17 an adjacent t-o its opposite end this valve or shutter has a projection 20 slidably mounted in an'arcuate slot 21 in disc 17 and projecting through said slot so that it may be convenliently reached by the operator for shifting the valve to closed or open positions.
Around its central opening, disc 17 is l fixed to one end'of a tube 22 whose opposite end is adapted to telescope the dischar e neck 23 of the container 10. Thus, with't e valve 18 shifted to uncover the opening of disc 17, the cream within container 10, or la proper supply thereof, may be readily forced out vthrough vthe tube 22, disc openings and the plate opening 14 into the feed opening 12 of the spreader. Then by shifting the valve to cover the opening of disc v17 further feed will be stopped, and thus in the lather spreadin and beard softening operation, the lcontamer 10 may be used as a handle, attached as it is to the tube 22.
Other forms of construction may be adopted, and though I have shown and described the preferred form it is to be understood that I include as a part of my invention all such modifications towhich it may be conveniently applied and which came within the terms of the claims.y
I claim: y y
1. A lather spreader andbeard lsoftener including an applicator of soft compressible material having an axial opening, a supporting vplate on which said applicator is fixed, a pair of discs held by said plate, one of which discs has an axially projecting tube, and-'a valve member shiftable between 55 around the annular edges of a pair of valve said discs, the discs and said plate having register openings communcatin between the said'tube and the axialopemng of the applicator and forming therewith a feed clflfannel for which said valve acts as a cut- O 2. A lather spreader and beard softened including an axially7 apertured applicator formed of sponge rubber, a support therefor including a projecting tube and.k spaced 10 .apart members apertured to communicate between the tube and the axial a rture of said applicator and thus form a eed channel, and amanually shiftable valve supported byvand between said members for closing and opening said channel.
