W. F. LUCAS COIL VIBRATOR FILING GAUGE Filed May 13, 1924 4 win nm A Patented May 19, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
H WALTER F. LUCAS, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COIL-VIBRATOR FILING GAUGE.
Application filed May- 13, 1924. Serial No. 713,037.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVALTER F. LUCAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ridgewood Station, Brooklyn, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coil-Vibrator Filing Gauges; and I do hereby declare the. following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which is appertains to make and use the same.
The invention provides a device for filing or dressing the points of a coil vibrator such as embodied in the ignition system of I the Ford automobile and has for its object to insure the filing of the points so that they will come squarely together and obviate concentration of the spark and thereby minimize pitting or burning .of the points and insuring ready starting of the engine.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate anembodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the samev to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of a filing gauge embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a side view thereof,
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a transverse section on the line 4 i of Figure 1.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and desig nated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The device comprises complemental plates 1 and 2, the top plate 1 having inclines 3 depending from opposite sides and the bottom plate 2 having companion inclines 4 extending upwardly from opposite sides and coacting with the inclines 3 to effect vertical adjustment of the top plate 1. Ears 5 project upwardly from opposite sides of the bottom plate 2 and engage opposite edges of the top plate 1 so as to prevent lateral displacement thereof and insure a registering of the inclines 3 and 4. Openings 6 are formed in the ears 5 and receive a file 7 e which is thin so as to pass readily between the points of an induction coil such as embodied in the ignition system of a Ford automobile. A protector 8 is applied to each end of the file 7 to prevent the latter from wearing away the ears 5 and plate 1. Each of the plates 1 and 2 has a central portion cut away as indicated at 9 whereby to provide clearance for the springs carrying the points between which the spark passes.
In the use of the device, it is placed upon the coil and the plate 1 adjusted to bring the file 7 between the points of the vibrator, after which the file is reciprocated thereby filing or dressing the points evenly so as to insure a. square contact between them, whereby to prevent concentration of the spark and an equalization thereof throughout the extent of the points.
It will be apparent that the files 7 may be made with smooth ends in which event the guards 8 may be omitted.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character and for the purposes specified, the same comprising upper and lower plates, a cooperating incline between the plates to eflect vertical adjustment of the upper plate, and a file carried by the plates and directed in its movements thereby.
2. A device of the character specified comprising upper and lower plates, complemental inclines on the plates to eifect vertical adjustment of the upper plate, a file, and means for directing the file in its movement.
3. A device of the character specified comprising a bottom plate provided with inclines and apertured cars, a top plate disposed between the ears and having depending inclines to coact with the inclines of the bottom plate, and a file extending across the top plate and mounted in the openings of 100 the said ears, the said plate having a middle portion cut away at one end.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER F. LUCAS.
