i facture of paper, and has for its object to improve the method of applying the filling stuft' or media during the process of making paper so Ythat loss of such filling stufi'is reduced to the smallest possible degree. The inventionalso relates to apparatus foruse in carrying out the improved method or proc ess.
In paper making according to methods heretofore employed, the filling stuff or media for the paper is added either in solid or in liquid form to the Hollander machine, or to the material in the pulping engine or in the pulp vat, and the portion of the earths andV pulp which has been withdrawn with the water running from the wet pulp is conducted back again directly to the pulp after the latter has left the pulp vat and while it is passing over the paper machine.
Now, according to the present invention all the filling stuff or media is vadded in liquid form to the pulp web on the wire cloth ofthe paper machine, and by such method of application it is found that only a small amount of the filling stuff or media is lost; seldom more than 10%. .Furthermore the paper receives on both sides a lasting good glaze and is less transparent than paper treated in the known way.
Itis evident that the filling-stuff or media employed may vary in its composition and degree of liquidity, and the principle of application is therefore not limited to any one class of Vfilling stuff or media.
In orderto maintain a minimum loss of filling stuff, the said stuit has to be 'added at such a point on the. wire cloth, that the suction boxes are only able to suck the stuit through the paper, but notout of it.
Depending partly on the thickness of the paper, .and partly on the number of the suctionboxes, the filling stuit' maybe added Y yto Lthe paper either on top of, or in front 4of,or after the first suction box.
Itis evident that the means whereby filling stuit can be added to the pulp web all the
vary widely as to construction, action shape. All such considerations are included providing they ossess the char# acteristic features of the invention.
On the accompanying drawings there is shown one example of apparatus by means of which the 'filling stuft' may be added to the pulp web, after the said stufiI1 has first been dissolved in water in any known way, for instance, in a common solution reservoir, and diluted with water in a dilution reservoir, which reservoirs of course have to be The main portion of the 'apparatus is a reservoir box l, which is placed on the top of the paper machine and reaches right across it. The bottom 2 of the box slopes from the centre to' both ends, so that the solution is kept in continuous motion. e The wedge shaped block 3 comprises a base 3 secured to the bottom of the box 1, a side wall 3b enclosing a trough for the liquid filling stuff, and an angularly inclined edge 39 over which the solution. of-filling stuff flows in an evenly thick stream over the whole length of the apparatus towards the gate 4. .For this purpose the block 3 is fashioned with a vertical wall 3d, and between this vertical edge andthe surface of the gate 4, the filling stuff descends. The space between the edge 3d andthe gate 4, may, for instance, be 10 centimeters high and 3 or 4 millimeters wide.
The ends 6 of the gates 4 are provided with adjusting set screws by means of which the gates may be raised or lowered so that the width of the gap between the gate vand gate and the tongue must, of course, be accurately adjusted and ground. The tongue is arranged beneath the gate and the lling solution runs constantly alongside its whole sloping surface evenly over the whole width of the pulp web.
By adjusting the gate in lthe vertical di` `the tongue 7 increases or decreases. The
tion is conducted by means of one or more pipes to the box l from which it flows on` the pulp web, in the way and manner described.
We claim: p c
Apparatus for applying liquid filling material to thepulp web on the .wire cloth of 'a paper machine, comprising a box or reservoir supported from the paper machine, a base member sloping from its centre to both ends, a wedge shaped block secured to the reservoir or box, an adjustable gate between which and the block is formed a vertical slot for regulating the flow of l0 the filling material, and a tongue over which said material flows in a stream on to the pulp web on the wire cloth of the machine. In testimony whereof we have aixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
