FURNACE.

Be it known that I, RAY J. PO'I'IER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Do-.
by me and desirable for use in house heating furnaces, although readily adaptedfor use in other relations. The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved coal burning furnace which is of very high efliciency.
Second, to provide an improved coal burn ing furnace in which there is substantially no residue left within the fire pot.
Third. to provide a structure adapted to accomplish these results which is easily controlled to provide. uniform temperatures.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation of my 1mprovements will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish. the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which:

Referring to the drawing, 1 represents thev combustion chamber and 2' the casing of a hot air heating furnace, there being a plu- .rality of flues 3 connected at their upper ends to the annular radiator 4. The air distributing pipes 5 are conventionally illusstratedb The cold air is supplied through the conduit 6 delivering to the conduit 7 opening at the bottom of the casing.
Disposed centrally and vertically within the combustion chamber is a firepot 8, the same being tubular and of relatively small diameter, the walls of the firepot being foraminated.
In the structure shown in Figs. II, III
and IV one section 9 of the wall is pivoted at 10 constituting a door for the upper part of the firepot. The firepot is mounted on the inner end of the fuel feed conduit 11 in which is a feed screw 12, the feed screw being disposed below the hopper v13. The means for driving the feed screw are conventionally indicated at 14.
The air blast pipe 15 is disposed to project into the combustion chamber and has a vertical portion 16 aligned with the firepot. This blast pipe is provided with a conical nozzle 17 which in the embodiment shown in Figs. II, III and IV is fixed to the pipe resting upon the upper end of the firepot constituting a closure therefor. The blast pipe is connected to the blower 18 having a feed pipe 19 connected to the air conduit 6. The blower also has a delivery pipe 20 connected to the conduit so that by the manipulation of'the valve 21 the amount of air delivered through the blast pipe 15 may be regulated.
The nozzle 17 is preferably conical as illustrated and has air inlet ports 22-at the upper end thereof. The nozzle head is provided with a nozzle 23 depending into the firepot and having lateral or side discharge A flange 24 upon the pipe con stitutes a bafiie for the flames.
In the modification shown in Figs. V, VI and VII the fuel feed feature is eliminated, the firepot 26 being supported upon a stand-like base. 27. The nozzle head 28 in this structure is of such diameter as to slidablv fit within the firepot and is provided with a tubular extension 29 slidably en gaging the vertical portion 16 of the blast pipe so that the nozzle head rests upon the small diameter disposed low the fuel as it is consumed.
The deflector 30 in this modified form is of such diameter as to move into the firepot. The nozzle tip 31 is provided with a plurality of jet orifices as shown in Fig. VII, the nozzle head being provided with the air ports 32.
My improved furnace is very efficient in the combustion of fuel, it being found that practically all of the fuel is consumed and the ash or residue discharged from the firepot, very little ash, however, being formed.
'I have illustrated and described my ,improvements in embodiments which I have found very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain other modifications or adaptations which I contemplate, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a structure of the class described, the
combination with a combustion chamber, of
a tubular foraminated firepot of relatively small diameter disposed vertically within said combustion chamber, a fuel feed means provided with a fuel delivery conduit connected to the bottom of said firepot, and a blast pipe projecting into said combustion chamber above said firepot and provided with a conical nozzle head constituting a closure for the upper end of the firepot, said head having air ports in its upper end and a nozzle depending therefrom centrally within said firepot and having side discharge openings.
. 2. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a combustion chamber, of a tubular foraminated firepot of ielatively small diameter disposed vertically within said combustion chamber, said firepot being provided with a pivoted wall section eonstituting a door, a fuel feed means provided with a fuel delivery conduit connected to the bottom of said firepot, and a blast pipe projecting into said combustion chamber above said firepot and provided with a nozzle head constituting a closure for the upper end of the firepot.
3. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a combustion'chamber, of a tubular foraminated firepot of relatively vertically within said combustion chamber, a fuel feed means provided with a fuel delivery conduit connected to the bottom of said firepot, and a blast pipe projecting into said combustion chamber above said firepot and provided with a nozzle head constituting a closure for the upper end of the firepot.

In a structure of the class described, the combination with a combustion chamber, of a tubular foraminated firepot of relatively small diameter disposed vertically within said combustion chamber, a fuel feed means provided with a fuel delivery conduit connected to the bottom of said firepot, a blast pipe projecting into said combustion chamber above said firepot and provided with a nozzle head constituting a closure for the upper end of the firepot,-and a flange-like deflector mounted above said head.
5. In a structure of the class described, the
combination with a combustion chamber, of
a tubular ,foraminated firepot of relatively small diameter disposed vertically within said combustion chamber. a fuel feed means provided with a fuel delivery conduit connected to the bottom of said firepot, and a blast pipe projecting into said combustion chamber above said firepot and provided with a nozzle head constituting a closure for the upper end of the firepot.
6. In a structure of the class described, the
combination with a combustion chamber, of a tubular foraminated firepot of relatively small diameter disposed vertically within said combustion chamber, a blast pipe projecting into said combustion chamber above said firepot and provided with a nozzle head constituting a closure for the upper end of the firepot, and a flange-like deflector" mounted above said head.
7. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a combustion chamber, of a tubular foraminated firepot of relatively small diameter disposed vertically within said combustion chamber, and a blast pipe projecting into said combustion chamber above said firepot and provided with a nozzle head constituting a closure for the upper end of the firepot.
8. In a structure of the class described. the combination with a combustion chamber. of a tubular fo'raminated firepot of relatively small diameter disposed vertically and centrally withinsaid combustion chamber, a blast pipe disposed above and provided with a vertical portion aligned with said firepot, a nozzle head slidably mounted on said blast pipe and adapted to rest upon the fuel within said firepot, and a flange-like deflector mounted on said head, said deflector being, of a diameter permitting it to pass into the combustion chamber when the nozzle head is lowered therein. i
9. In a structure of the class'described, the combination with a combustion chamber,

10. and a conical nozzle head slidably mounted on said blast pipe and adapted to rest upon the fuel within said firepot, said head having air inlet ports at the upper end thereof and being provided with a centrally disposed nozzle having a plurality of discharge openmgs.
11. A structure of the class described, comprising a vertically disposed tubular foraminated firepot, a blast pipe disposed above and provided with a vertical portion aligned with said firepot, and a conical nozzle head slidably mounted on said blast pipe and adapted to rest upon the fuel within said firepot constituting a closure for the upper end thereof, said head having air inlet ports at the upper end thereof and being provided with a centrally disposed nozzle having a plurality of discharge openings.

A structure of the class described, comprising a vertically disposed tubular foraminated firepot, a blast pipe=disposed above and provided with a vertical portion aligned with said firepot, a nozzle head slidably mounted on said blast pipe and adapted to rest upon the fuel within said firepot, and a flange-like deflector mounted on said head, said deflector being of a diameter permitting it to pass into the combustion chamber when the nozzle head is lowered therein.

A structure of the class described, con'iprising a vertically disposed tubular foraniinated firepot, a blast pipe disposed above and provided with a vertical portion aligned with said firepot, and a nozzle head slidably mounted on said blast pipe and adapted to rest upon the fuel within said firepot.
14. A structure of the class described, comprising a vertically disposed tubular foraminated firepot, said firepot being provided with a pivoted wall section constituting a door, a fuel feed conduit connected to the bottom of said firepot, and a blast pipe provided with a nozzle head constituting a closure for the upper end of the firepot.
15. A structure of the class described, comprising a vertically disposed tubular foraminated firepot, a blast pipe provided with a conical nozzle head constituting a closure for the upper end of the firepot, said head having air ports in its upper end and a nozzle depending therefrom centrally within said firepot and having side discharge openings, and means for supportingsaid nozzle for vertical adjustment within said head.

A structure of the class described, comprising a vertically disposed tubular foraminated firepot, a blast pipe provided with a conical nozzle head constituting a closure for the upper end of the firepot, said head having air ports in its upper end and a nozzle depending therefrom centrally within said firepot and having side discharge openings.
17. A structure of the class described, comprising a vertically disposed foraminated firepot, a blast pipe disposed above and provided with a vertical portion aligned with said firepot, and a nozzle head slidably mounted on said blast pipe and adapted to rest upon the fuel within said firepot constituting a closure for the upper end thereof.
18. A structure of the class described, comprising a vertically disposed foraminated firepot, a blast pipe, and a nozzlehead for said blast pipe constituting a closure for the upper end thereof.
19. A structure of the class described, comprising a vertically disposed foraminated firepot, a blast pipe, and a nozzle head constituting a closure for the upper end thereof.
