Be it known that I, HARVEY R. NEWQUIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Combination Lock-lV-asher Tools and Socket lVrenches, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to a combination lock washer tool and socket wrench, which is particularly adapted for clinching and straightening the lock washers of the bolts holding the Bendix spring of anautomobile in position, and for removing said bolts, and the objects of my invention are: First, to provide a device of this class whereby the bolts, holding the Bendix spring of'an automobile starting mechanism in position, may
be easily removed and whereby the conventional lock washer holding said bolts from turning may be easily released from positive engagement with the bolt heads from the outside of the casing enclosing said portion of the starting mechanism; second, to provide a device of this class whereby said lock washers, adapted to hold said bolts from turning, may be easily clinchedor bent upwardly in positive engagement with. the bolt constructed device of this class, and seventh, to provide such a dev1ce which is very simple and economical of construction, durable, easy to operate, and whichwill not readily deteriorate or get out of order. V lVith these and other objects in view, as will appear hereinafter, my "invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims,'re ference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon, which form apart of this application, in which Figure l is a front view of mycoinbina- 1924. Thesocket member 1, actuating member 2, actuating member retaining screws 3, socket member handle t, actuating cam 5, pivot screw 6, actuating cam handle 7', and the lug 8, constitute the principal parts and portions of my device.
The socket member 1 is preferably made long so that the same may be mserted into small and deep recesses, and the same may I be made of any desired cross-section, but is preferably provided with a Hat side against which is positioned and reciprocally mount ed the actuating member 2, which is retained infposition relatively thereto by means of screws 3. bar 1 is provided a polygonally shaped recess 1', which is adapted to receive a nut or the head of a bolt B, there being provided an additional, reduced, inwardly extending recess 1 which is adapted to receive the shank of a bolt when the socket member is positioned over a nut. The actuating member 2 is pro- At the one end of the socket meinvided with longitudinal slots 2, through which the screws 3 extend, and which per mit the member 2 to be shifted longitudinally relatively to the member 1. The normall lower end 2 of the actuating member 2 is beveled and serves as a wedge between the clinched or upwardly bent locking lug of the washer V and the nut or the head of the bolt adapted to be positioned in th recess of the socket member 1.
In order to straighten the washer or bend the locking lug thereof downwardly, the actuating member 2 is shifted to the extreme upward position, shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, and the socket memher 1 is positioned over the nut or bolt head. The upper end of the actuating member 2 is then struck with a hammer, which opera.- tion bends the locking lug outwardly and downwardly and permits the belt or nut to be removed.
The socket member 1 is provided at its upper end with an outwardly extending handle l, whereby said socket member may be rotated for removing the bolt B.
At the upper end of said socket member is pivotally mounted an actuating 5 by means of a pivot screw 6, as shown best in Fig. 6 of the drawings. A handle 7 is secured to and extends outwardly from the actuating cam 5 for rotating the same. At the one side of the cam member 5 is pro vided helical cam portion 5, which is adapted to be engaged by a cam lug 8 secured at the upper portion of the inner sides of the actuating member 2.
lVhen desiring to clinch the locking lug of the washer .V against the flat side of a nut or bolt head, the actuating member 2 is shifted to its extreme downward position, with the handle 7 in the extreme counterclockwise position as shown by dotted lines in Fig. (3. The recess portion of the socket member 1 is then positioned over the head of the bolt or the nut, with the locking lug of the washer extending through the lower elongated slot 2 of the actuating member 2, as shown in Fig. 5. It will be noted that the lower end of the lower elongated slot 2 is flat, as indicated by 2 in Fig. 4, and is slightly rounded at its inner edge, as indicated by 2 in Fig. 5. lVhcn the actuating member 2 is in the position shown in Figs. d and 5 of the drawings, the lower end of the cam lug S is in engagement with the lower end or portion of the helical cam portion 5 of the actuating cam lVhen the device is in the position stated, the actuating cam is then rotated from the position shown by dotted lines of the handle in Fig. (3 of the drawings, to that shown by solid lines, which raises the actuating memher 2, bending the locking lug W of the washer XV upwardly and clinching the same against the flat side of the bolt head or nut. It will be here noted that the outer side of the actuating member 2 contiguous to the lower screw 3 is cut away, as indi cated by 2 in Figs. 2 and 5, which permits the actuating member 2 to be shifted outwardly a sl ght distance when the portion of the actuating member between the lower end of the lower slot 2 and the lower end of said member forced beyond and over the locking lug of the w; sher W. t 'ill also be here noted that the lower end of the actuating member 2 is of substantially the same thickness the distance between the head of the lower screw 3 and the [lat side of the socket member 1, so that the lower end of said actuating member is held in close proximity to the head of the bolt or nut when straightening Or bending the locking lug V down rardiy.
It is obvious from this construction, as illustrated in the drawings and disclosed in the foregoing specification, that there is provided a combined lock washer tool and socket wrench as aimed at and set forth in the objects of the invention and though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be hunted to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a tool of the class described, a socket member provided at one end with a recess adapted to receive a bolt head or nut, and an actuating member shiftably mounted at one side thereof and provided at its lower portion with a wedge portion adapted to be inserted between the locking portion of a lock washer and said bolt head or nut.
2. In a tool of the class described, a socket member provided at one end with a recss adapted to receive a bolt head or nut, and an actuating member shiftably mounted at one side of said socket member and provided near its one end with a that portion adapted to engage the under side of the locking portion of a lock washer.
3. In a tool of the class described, a socket member provided at one end with a recess adapted to 'eceive a bolt head or nut, an actuating member shiftably mounted at one side of said socket member and provided near its one end with a flat portion adapted to engage the under side of the locking portion of a lock washer. and a cam means at the upper portion of said socket member adapted to engage and shift said actuating member.

In a tool of the class described, a socket member provided at one end with a recess adapted to receive a bolt head or nut, an actuating membershiftably mounted at one side of said socket member and provided near its one end with a fiat portion adapted to engage the under side of the locking portion of a lock washer, and a cam member provided with an outwardly extending handle pivotally mounted at the opposite end of said socket member and adapted to engage a cam lug near the one end of said actuating member for shifting the latter.
5. In a device of the class described, a socket member vprovided at its one end with a polygonally shaped recess, and an actuating member reciprocally mounted at one side of said socket member and provided at its lower end with a wedge portion adapted to be driven between the locking portion of a lock washer and the nut or the head of the bolt positioned in the recess of said socket membein, V
6. In a device of the class described, a socket member provided at its one end with a polygonally shaped recess, an actuatingmember reciprocally mounted at the one'side of said socket member and provided nea its lower end with a slot having a fiat portion, and means for shifting said actuating member relatively to said socket member.
7. In a device otthe class described, a socket member provided at its one end with a polygonally shaped recess, an actuating member reciprocally mounted at the one side of said socket member andprovided near its lower end withaslot having a flat portion, and a cam member provided with an outwardly extending handle rotatably mounted at the normally upper end of said socket member, said cam-member being adapted to engage a cam' lug at the upper portion of said actuating member for shifting the lat ter relatively to said socket member.
8. In a device of the class described, a socket member provided at its lower end with a polygonally' shaped recess adapted to receive a bolt head or a nut, the one side of the wall forming said recess being removed, permitting the one side of the bolt head or nut positioned in said recess to come sub-' stantially flush with the one side of said socket member, and an actuating member reciprocally mounted atsaid one side of the socket member contiguous to said recess and provided at its normally lower end with a wedge poi'tiomadapted to be inserted between the locking portion of a lock washer and the one side of the bolt head ornut positioned in said polygonally shaped recess.
9. In a device of the class described, a socket member provided at its lower end with a polygonally shaped recess adapted to receive a bolt head or a nut, the one side of the wall forming said recess being removed,
permitting the one side of the bolt head or nut positioned in said recess to come substantially flush with the one side of said socket member, an actuating member reciprocally mounted at said one side of the socket member contiguous to the recess therein and provided near its lower end with an elongated slot provided with a fiat bottom end rounded at its. inner edge, and
