Description

G. OLSON SALT AND PEPPER BOX Filed A ril'zl, 1924 frrwewfar: 6 727V? 7 Patented May 12, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT GUSTAVE orsom'or crrroneo, ILLINOIS.-
1,537,782 OFFICE.
SALT AND PEPPER BOX.
Application filed April 21, 192
"State of Illinois, have inventedcertain new and usefullmprovements in Salt and Pepper Boxes, of which the following is a specification;
My invention relates to improvements in salt and pepper boxes, and hasfor its object the provision of an improved combination box of this character adapted and arranged to contain both salt and pepper and equipped with improved means whereby either salt or pepper may be discharged from the box as desired.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Fig. 1 is a side view of a box embodying the invention;
Fig. 2, a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, a top plan view of the box;
Fig. 4, a section taken on line 4- 1: of
Fig. 2;
Fig. 5, a partial section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 6, a section taken on line 66 of Fig.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a cylindrical receptacle 7 of the form indicated and having an open bottom. A removable bottom member 8 is provided for said receptacle and a flange 9 is provided on said bottom to fit snugly within the lower por tion of said receptacle. The flange 9 is provided with two oppositely arranged cam tongues 10 cut from the body of the flange and bent inwardly as shown, the lower corners of the partition 11 being provided with notches 12 to receive'the flange 9 and openings 13 to receive said cam tongues. As will be noted the lower edges of the tongues 10 are downwardly inclined to form ineffect screw cam surfaces engaging with theibottoms of the openings 13 to tighten the bottom 8 in place'when the, bottom 8 is rotated. Bythis arrangement the bottom 8 may be readily inserted with the flange 9 fitting into parts hereinafter.
Serial No. 707,989.
the notches 12 and upon rotation ofthe bottom memberthe tongues 10 will automatically'engage the openings 13 and draw the bottom member 8 snugly into closing position. I
The partition 11 is provided at its upper end with a central threaded stem 14 projecting through a central opening in the top 15 of the receptacle 7. A threaded nut .or knob 16 engagesthe stem 14, as shown, to lock the parts in place. A rotatable cap. 17 is fitted over the top of receptacle 7 and provided with escape openings 18 adapted and arranged to register alternately with. corresponding escape. openmgs 19 in thetop of receptacle 7. The openings 19 are diametrically arranged and the openings 18 are angularly displaced as best shown in Fig. 3
and-whereby when the cap 17 is shifted into oneposition 0118x8613 of openings are brought into registration and when the cap 17 is shifted into itsother position the other set of openings are brought into registration, the first set being closed. The cap 17 is provided with a handle lip 20 for convenience in shifting the same and a stop pin 21 is extended through the wall of receptacle 7 engaging a notch 22 in cap 17 to limit the movements of caps 17 with one or the other set of openings 1819 in registration with each other. The pin 21 also serves as a stop for the partition 11 to cause the same to extend transversely between the escape openings 19. By this arrangement salt may be supplied to the receptacle 7 on one side of partition 11 and pepper on the other side and either may be discharged therefrom y when desired by shifting the cap 17 to bring one or the other set. of escape openings into registration with each other.
While I have illustrated and described th preferred form ofconstruction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without depart .ing from the spirit of the invention. 1,
prising a cylindrical receptacle open at the bottom; a. removable vertical partition fitting said receptacle; :1 threadedstem on the top of said partition projecting through the top of said receptacle; a removable cap fitting over the top of said receptacle and rotatable on said stein there being'openings in said cap and correspondingopenings stantially as described.
2. A device of the,classqdescribed comprising a cylindrical receptacle aopenzat the bottom; .a-yertical.partitien fitting said receptacle; :athreaded stem: :at the; top of- ,said
partition projecting through the top of said receptacle; a capfitting over thetoprofrsaid iseeeptaclezthere.being openings in said cap and correspondingopenings in said top, the
