PATENT OFFICE.
RUPERT R. MORTON, 0F FINLOW, WEST VIRGINIA.
CABLE GUIDE.
Application filed October 11,1924. SerialNo. 743,179.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUPERT R. MORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Finlow, in the county of Fayette and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cable Guides; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make I and use the same.
The object of this invention is to materially reduce the friction on flexible conductor cables such as used in connection with the locomotive of a coal or other mine gathering electric locomotive thereby materially prolonging the life of the cable insulation.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
lVhile the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification,
Figure 1 is a side view of a cable guide embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof,
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section r on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4-4-of Figure 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
In practice, the guide is generally placed upon the front end of a locomotive coming out of place while reeling the conductor cable or when going in for paying out the cable and giving proper direction thereto. It consists of a base plate 1 upon which are mounted a fixed bracket 2 and a pivoted bracket 3, said brackets being in line and disposed at opposite sides of the base plate. The fixed brac et 2 receives a guide pulley 4. The pivoted bracket 3 receives a fixed pulley 5, and a movable pulley 6, the latter eing adjustable vertically to admit of splices in the cable passing between the two pulleys 5 and 6. The axle 7 for the movable pulley 6 is mounted in vertical slots 9 formed in the side members of the bracket 3. The axle 8 of the fixed pulley 5 has its ends projecting beyond the side members of the pivoted bracket 3 and coil springs 10 connect the projecting ends of the two axles 7 and 8 and operate to draw the two axles together and admit of the upper axle 7 and the pulley 6 thereon moving vertically. The pivoting of the bracket 3 provides for lateral movement of the complemental pulleys 5 and 6 when the locomotive is passing around curves.
A transverse frame 11 is mounted upon the base plate 1 and is elevated therefrom a distance to bring the space between the pulleys carried thereby in the plane of the grooved edge of the pulleys 4L and 5 and the pulleys 12 mounted upon the frame 11 are movable laterally to admit of splices in the cable passing freely between them. The.
axles 13 of the pulleys 12 have their opposite end portions passing through slots 14 formed in the upper and lower members of the frame 11 and the projecting ends are connected by coil springs 15 which serve to normally draw the pulleys together and to hold the axles 13 at the inner ends of the slots 14. The frame 11' is carried by brackets 16 which are bolted or otherwise attached to the base plate 1.
What is claimed is 1. A cable guide of the character specified comprising spaced guide pulleys, one of the pulleys being mounted to move into and out of alinement with the other pulley, and a pair of transversely arranged guidepulleys each being yieldingly mounted to move toward and from one another.
2. A cable guide of the character specified comprising spaced guide pulleys, a vertically movable pulley in conjunctive relation with one of the said pulleys, and transversely arranged guide pulleys yieldingly mounted to move toward and from one another.
3. A cable guide of the character specified comprising spaced guide pulleys, a vertically movable pulley in conjunctive relation with one of the said pulleys, the last mentioned pulleys being mounted to move into and out of alinement with the other of the first mentioned pulleys, and transverse1y arranged guide pulleys, the latter pulleys being yieldingly mounted to move toward and from one another.
4. A cable guide comprising a base plate, a fixed guide pulley thereon, a bracket piv oted to the plate, a fiXed-and a movable guide pulley carried by the pivoted bracket, an
elevated transverse frame, guide pulleys mounted 111 said frame and movable laterally, and springs cooperating with said guide 10 pulleys to normally draw them inwardly towards-each otherp In testimony whereofI aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
RUPERT R. MORTON. Witnesses O. G. CoLLIsoN, E. M. CAPETON.
