Be 1t known that I, BARNETT SHATZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buenos .Aires, Argentine Republic, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriter-Spacing Mechanism, of'which the following is a specification. This invention relates to improvements in line-spacing mechanism for typewriters and more particularly to improvements in the type of line-spacing mechanism disclosed in my Patent No. 1422892, July 18, 1922. p
The primary object of the invention is to furnish a spacing-mechanism capable of very minute adjustments so that the mechanism may be arranged to accommodate variously spaced lines onlined or ruled paper, and which will also permit the typewriter platen roll to be readily shifted to the proper position for correcting the matter in a typewritten line. i
A further object of the invention is to provide a spacing-mechanism including. friction contact elements adapted to positively and instantaneously move the platen roll when the roll operating member is actuated.
Another object is to provide improved mechanism for locking the adjustable stop of the shifting mechanism in various positions. I
A still further object is to provide a novel resilient washer locked in position and functioning to hold the platen shaft operating disk in a fixed position relatively to the pawls or cams with which it cooperates.
lVith the foregoing objects outlined and with other objects in view .which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel featuresdescribed in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawing, 1 designates a bell crank lever pivot-ally mounted on the shaft 2 of. the platen roll of the machine and provided with a pointer at its upper end cooperatmg with a graduated scale 22 arranged horiposition by means of a spring 6 having its lower end connected to the arm 1 of the b'ell crank lever and its upper end secured at 6 to the end plate 23' of the carriage frame. This spring draws'the arm 1 of the bell crank lever upwardly and causes the shelf 1' of said arm to abut against the lower end of the stop screw 9. This stop screw extends through a split stationary nut 7, which is Socured to the end plate 23 by means of the screw 8. The stop screw 9 has a head 10 adapted to be engaged by the operator for adjusting said screw. The split portion of the nut 7 is provided with a thumb-screw'll adapted to contract said split nut for lock ing thescrew 9 in position. 'The end plate 23 is provided with a depending lug 13 which is apertured t0 form a bearing for the sliding bar 12, which is provided at its forward end with an angular portion 15 adapted to be depressed by the operator for causing actuation of the mechanism. A bearing-lug 14 also slidably supports said bar 12.
The bar 12 is moved forwardly by a spring 16 which has one of its ends fixed to a screw 17 on the end plate 23 and its other end 86-. cured at 18 to the rear end of the bar 1 2. A screw16 limits the forward'movement of the bar 12. i ,v The sliding bar 12 is provided with a pin 19 adapted when the sliding is moved rearwardly to strike the abutment surface w and cause the cam pawl 5' to swing about its axis 4. This causes the periphery of the cam to frictionally lock with the disk 21 which is keyed to the shaft 2 at 21 When the cam 5 looks itself to the disk 21, said disk will turn in a counter-clockwise direction with the bell crank lever 1 and this movement will continue until a second cam pawl 5 mounted on the arml of the bell crank lever, strikes a stop element 5. Vhe'n this occurs the cam 5 will be also swung into a. position to lock itself against the periphery of the disk 21, and then the bell crank lever 1, pawls and 5 disk 21 and the platen shaft 2. will all move'together. 6. A typewriting machine as claimed in claim 1 including a resilient washer mounted on the shaft and engaging the disk for yieldingly forcing the same in one direction, and means for locking said washer in position to prevent the same from turning with said nisk.

In a typewriting machine, a carriage end plate, a platen shaft extending through said end plate, a disk fixed to said shaft and provided with a smooth periphery a double armed lever pivotally mounted on said shaft 15 and provided with a plurality of pivotally mounted cam pawls adapted when swung in certain directions to look themselves to said disk, a slidable-operatlng bar provlded with a pin adapted to engage one of said 0am pawls for swinging the same into locking position, a fixed stop member adapted to engage the other pawl for swinging the same into locked position, a spring engaging one arm of said lever and functioning to swing the lever in one direction, and an adjustable stop engageahle with said lever for limiting its movement in one direction.
