UNITED STATES PAUL A. BANCCEL, OF NUTLEY, AND JOHN F. KIRGAN, 01E PHILLIPSBURG, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNORS T0 INGERSOLL-LRANDv COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, A
'CORPORATION on NEW JERSEY.
CONDENSER UNIT.
Application filed April 10, 1923. Serial No. 631,095,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PAUL A. BANCEL, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Nutley, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, and JOHN F. KIRGAN, a citizen'of the United States, a resident of Phillipsburg, county of Warren, and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain Condenser Unit, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings.
This invention relates to condenser units comprising a surface condenser having cooling elements in the form of rows of tubes, and one or more coolers connected to said condenser.
"The object of the invention, is to enable the -velocity of thesteam and gases passing between and around the lower rows of tubes in the condenser to be maintained and prevented from falling or decreasing below a pre-determined ratio.
- The invention is shown 1n its preferred forms in the accompanying which Figure 1 is an end elevation partly in transverse section of a condenser unit, and
l igure 2 is a detail end view partly broken away and in transverse section, showing a modification.
Referring to the drawings, the condenser comprises the casing A which is preferably shown larger at the top and smaller at the bottom, or wedge shaped. Steam and gases enter at the inlet ll at the top and pass out at the outlet C at the bottom. The condensate is drawn oil from the discharge opening l). The cooling elements comprise rows of tubes E and in the drawings only the lower rows of tubes are shown; In order to maintain the velocity of steam and gases passing between and around the lower rows of tubes. means are located in the lower portion ot' the condenser adjacent the outlet 0 for decreasing the area for the passage of steam in the lower portion of the casing. In Figure 1 an uncooled dummy F is shown located in the position described, and this dummy preferably comprises a tubular member extending lengthwise or longitudinally of the condenser casing and bodily located wholly within the confinesot the extreme drawings, in
lower portion of the casing in proximity'to vided with cooling elements H in the form of grids substantially like those shown in the prior Patent No. 1,380,460 granted June 7, 1921, to Paul A. Bancel. one of the present inventors, so that the form and construction of the coolers need not be further described. It will be sufiicient to state that cooling .water is circulated through the grids H in any suitable manner in the coolers, and the remaining air and gases passed from the condenser A are drawn upwardly through the coolers as indicated by the arrows. by means of suitable evacuating apparatus (not shown).
In the modificationshown in lhg'ur the area for the passage of steam in the. lower portion of the condenser is contracted by the insertion of a dummy formed in two parts and comprising the baffles or guide members J.
We claim:
A surface condenser comprising a casing larger at the top and smaller at the bottom an inlet at the top for steam and gases and a discharge opening at the bottom, cooling elements in the casing in the form of rows of tubes, and an uncooled dummy in the form of a tubular member extending longitudinally of the casing and bodily located wholly within the confines of the extreme lower portion of the casing in proximity to the discharge opening for contracting the outlet portion of the casing and increasing the velocity-of the steam and gases around the lower condenser tubes.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification.
PAUL A. BANCEL. JUHN F. KIRGAN.
