A. E. SILLER BORING AND SCREW DRIVING TOOL Filed May '6, 1924 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented May 5, 1925.
'ALIONSO E. SILLEIQOF MONTEBREY, MEXICO;
' BORING Ann SCREW-DRIVING moon.
Application filed ma 6,
To all whom it mdytoncevm: I p I Be itknown that 1, ALFONSO E. SILLER, citlzen of Mexico, residing at Monterrey, N.
L., Mexicoyhave invented certain new and v useful Improvements in Boring and Screw- Diiving Tools, of which-the following 15 a specification.
This invention relates to a hand tool for use in boring holes, settingscrews, or the like, the invention having more particular reference to an implement of the type in' WlllCll a large gear has a crank handle attached thereto and engages a pinion to which the tool or blll'lS' fixed, the invention having for an ob ect the provision of a novel tool of this sort provided with a handle to which the bit may be locked when it is desired to apply extra turning force directly to the bit through the medium of the handle.
r 1 further comprehension of the inven tion, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will'be had to the followmg description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawing is a side elevation of my improved tool. I i
Fig. 21s a longitudinal sectional view, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of 1* 1g. 2.
- Fig. 4 is a like view taken on the line 4.'%
of Fig. 2. i
Fig. 5 is a S'ldO elevation at right angles to Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing, my mi-- proved tool comprises an elongated body it) of generally cylindrical shape which is formed with a recess 11. entered therein from one side a short distance from its forward end. In this recess is located a bevel pinion 12 which has a hub projection 12 seating in a suitable socket in the front wall of the recess. 11. This hub 12 is formed on its forward end with a square socket 14 to receive the squared rear ends of the bit 15. To retain the latter with itsrear GIICl'lH engagement with the hub 12 the shank of the bit is formed with a cii'cun'iferential groove 16 into which projects screw 17 threaded through the side of the member 10, the shank of the bit being accommodated in an axial boring in the member which extends forwardly from the recess 11.
ll leshing with the pinion 12 is a gear20 which is mounted on a screw 21 inserted into 1924. Serial No. 711,306.
fixed thereon a crank handle 22 provided with a knob 23.' By rotating this gear 20 the bit 15 of the tool willbe causedto revolve at relatively higher speed.
In order to enable a high degree of-torque to be applied to the bit 15 when'desired, T. preferably provide means whereby the lat-- ter may be locked to the member 10 which then serves as the forward portion of a handle in which the bit is fixed. As here shown the member 10 has a square passage 25 extending rearwardly therethrough from the recess 11 and in this passage is freely engaged a square rod 26 which iis adapted to engage when desired in a square socket 2'7 vin the rear face of the pinion 12. This rod 26 is fixed at its'rear end to a flanged cap 28 which freely encloses the rear end of the member; At its forward end this cap bears against a ring-nut 30 which is screwed on a short threaded portion 10 and which may have a swivel engagement with the cap, that is to say an engagement which permits the nut to turn relatively to the cap but makes the two move axially in unison, this being here-accomplished by means of a ferrule 31 fixed on the end of the cap and having an By screwing the I I the socket 27 so that direct movement is transmitted from the cap 28 to the bit 15.
In Fig. 5 I have shown the handle portion of the tool as in the form of a separate ele ment 28" which is inserted into the rear end of the member 10 and which is held in place by means of the screws 35, which are passed througl'i. the rear end of the member 10 and engage in suitable threaded sockets in the handle. i i
lVhile I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction here shown and that. various changes and modifications might be made therein-without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined. in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claiin asnew and desire to protect by Letters Patent follows v 1. 'A tool of the typedescribed comprising an elongated body member formed between of the United States is as one side thereof, a pinion seated in said recess a gear mounted on the side of the said body member and meshing with said pinion, a handle fixed to said gear, a square rod extending rearwardly through a COIUPlGH'KD- lary passage in said body member from said recess. a flanged cap seated on the rear end of said body member to which said rod is lined at its rear end, and a ring-nut threaded on the said body member against which the forward end of the said cap bears.
A tool of the type described comprising an elongated body nember "formed between. its ends with a recess entered thereinto from one side thereof, a pinion seated in said recess, a gear mounted on the side of the body member and meshing with said pinion, a handle fixed to said gear, a square rod extending rearwardly through a complementary passage in said body member from said recess a flanged cap seated on the rear end of said body member to which said rod is fixed at its rear end, and a ring-nut threaded on the said body member against which the forward end of the said cap bears, paid cap having a swivel connection with said nut.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
ALFONSO E. SILLER.
