Description
M. GRAY.
Derricks -for Raising Fences. NG.153,675. Patented Aug.4,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
MARTIN GRAY, OF MENTOR, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN DERRICKS FOR RAISING FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,675, dated August 4, 187 application filed May 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN GRAY, of Mentor, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio have invented certain Improvements in Derricks for Raising Fences, of which the followin g is a specification:
The first part of my invention relates to the combination of the rope-protector with the derrick-frame. The use of said protector is for the purpose of protecting the ropes from wet. The second part of my invention relates to the combination of the hook With the derrick. Said hook is formed of a flat piece of iron, and is bent at a right angle, which permits it to be easily passed under the lower rail of the fence, when it is to be raised up, for the purpose of blocking; also, this form permits its easy removal when the work is done. The upper surface of said hook is roughened to prevent its slipping.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the derrick complete in all its parts. Fig. 2 is an enlarged View of the hook, showing its form.
A, Fig. 1, is the frame of the derrick. Se-
cured on the lower edge of the upper rail is the protector B. Said protector is formed of sheet metal or its equivalent, and it descends on both sides of the roller a sufficient distance to protect the rope from wet. The hook 0, shown at Fig. 2, is formed of heavy flat iron of sufficient strength for its work. Said hook is bent at a right angle for the purpose of allowing it to be easily passed under the lower rail of the fence. Its upper side is roughened to prevent its slipping when in the act of raising the fence by the operation of the derrick.
What'I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A device for raising fences, consisting of the covered Windlass-spindle mounted upon two legs, braced at the top to permit its being placed astride the fence, and having the rope and right angled corrugated hook O A, as and for the purpose shown and described.
Witnesses: MARTIN GRAY.
