' J. C. YOUNGBLOOD CARBURETOR CONTROL Filed NOV. 5, 1922 11v VENTOR 0656 2/76. wing/JIM )1 TTORNE y invention, such t'll dli til

'Josnrn c. YoonsnLoon. or A'rwoon, Kansas.
, cannon-iron common Application filed November I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I ,.J 'osnrn C. Youne- BLoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atwood, in the county of Rawlins and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carburetor Controls; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a carburetor con trol and it is particularly adapted for use in connection with Ford motor vehicles.
The primary object is to provide a simple carburetor control, operable from th instrument board of the vehicle, the mechanism consisting of a minimum number of parts and yet of such construction that it will be inexpensive to manufacture while at the same time being efficient in operation.
The novel construction of the invention will be apparent by reference to the following description in connection with the ac companying drawings, in which- Fig. l is a detail view of the operating mechanism for the carburetor, the instrument'board and dash being shown in section.
Fig. l is a detail view of a connecting loep.
Referring now to als of reference:
1 designates the dash, 2 the cowl and 3 the instrument board of a motor vehicle of known construction. The elements just described represent corresponding elements on the present model of motor vehicle made by the Ford Motor Company of Detroit, Michi gan and the invention is shown in connection therewith because it is particularly adapted for use in connection with such a vehicle. Such a vehicle employs a carburetor like that. indicated at 4 and it has a needle valve 5 and a choke valve 6. On the stem of the needle valve is a plate 7 having openings 8 and 9 to receive the tines 10 and constitutes a link the drawings by numer- 19, the face 20 of which is a, 1022. Serial in. 598,021."
connection between the manually operated rodv 13 and the plate 7 The upper end of the fork 12 is bifurcated with ends 15 and I5 bent over to form a split loop 14. The ends 15 and 15 of the loop engage a stud 16. The lower end of the rod 13' is provided with a split loop 17 projecting through an opening 18 in the stud 16 'so that the loop 17 extends through the stud 16 and also through the loop 14. Therefore, there is a universal connection provided between the rod 13 and the forked link 12, the connection being such that a sharp, angular adjustment may be made by a slight turning of the rod 13. I 1
On the upper end of the rod 13 is a disk referably luminous and the face prefera words More and Less. The purpose of making the disk luminous is to enable the occupant to find it at night and the object of using thewords More and Less is to indicate the direction in which the disk is to be turned for a maximum or a minimum gasoline feed or for adjustments between the two extremes.
Mounted upon the shaft or rod 13' is a stop collar 21 engageable with a stud 22 on the arm 23 of a pivoted elbow lever 24 carried by a bracket 25 on the dash of the vehi ole, the stop collar being preferably adjustable on the rod to determine extent of opening of the choke valve and the stud being rotatably mounted on the lever arm to prevent binding of the rod in the stud when the rod is moved longitudinally, as presently described.
The other arm 26 connects to a link 27 which, in turn, connects to the elbow lever 28 of the choke valve 6. The stud and stop 22 being loose upon the rod 13 allows the rodd13" to be rotated without afi'ecting the stu The rotation of the rod 13' will impart a rotary motion to the fork link 12 so that the needle valve 5 can be adjusted. By pulling up on the rod 13, the stop collar 21 will contact with the stud and guide 22 so that a longitudinal movement can be imparted to it, causing it to swing the arm 26 upward and thereby choke the carburetor.
Attention is called to the fact that with this device a single manually operated rod suffices both for operating the choking meohs anism and for operating the needle valve. The elbow lever for the choke valve is set M UNITED. STATES'rarnnrorrics.
lld
so that it swings over dead center osition, which permits the choking to be ully accomplished without raising the choked end of the rod out of the carburetor adjusting head or plate. Thus I can eliminate the necessity of extra rods, brackets, sleeves and sliding joints.
The combination stud and guide on the rod 13 which is connected to the arm of the elbow lever makes a simple means for mechanically connecting the rod 13' to the elbow lever. The combination stud and sleeve serves two purposes: it acts as a bearing for the rod when adjustment is being made and a sleeve for the choking.
The connection between the rod 13 and the elbow lever 25 is very simple and while it is as effective as similar devices now on the market, it is very much easier to manufacture and the universal joint renders the device extremely sensitive in that it can be operated by a minimum turning movement of the rod 13.
The device is extremely simple to install and will readily perform the function for which it is intended.
What I claim and desire ters Patent is:
1. The combination with a motor vehicle of the Ford type comprising a dash having an opening therein, a carburetor having separate choke and needle valves, a bell crank lever mounted on the dash and a link operatively connecting One arm of the bell crank with the choke valve, of a carburetor to secure by Letcollar on the second rod engageable with the stud to rock the bell crank when the second rod is moved longitudinally.
2. The combination with a motor vehicle of the Ford type comprising a dash having an opening therein, a carburetor having separate choke and needle valves; the latter being equipped with a coupling member, a bell cranklever mounted on the dash and a connecting link between one arm of the bell crank and the choke valve, of a carburetor control device comprising a rod having idle longitudinal and active rotary connection with the coupling member of the needle valve, a second rod extended through the dash opening and having a universal joint connection with the first rod, a stud having a pivotally fixed supporting connection with the other arm of the bell crank lever and having an aperture through which the second rod is slidably and rotatably supported and a stop collar adjustably mounted on the second rod engageable with the stud to rock the bell crank lever when the second rod is moved longitudinally.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
JOSEPH C. YOUNGBLOOD.
