Description
May 5, 1925. 1,536,542 1 H. A. WEGNER COMBINATION FIRE BRUSH AND HOE Filed Oct. 15, 1925 mm at nington and UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN A. WEGNER OF THIEF RIVER FALLS, MII TNIESOTA.
COMBINATION gran BRUSH an]: non,
Application filed October 15, 1823. Seria1 No.368,754.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known' that I, HERMAN A. VVEGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thief River Falls, in the county of Pen- State ofMinnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination FireBrushes and Hoes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a combination fire brush and hoe and is designed for the purpose of subduing,controlling, and putting out forest fires. It is used to smother and moveleaves, mold, and other openings 2' of the plate 7 ground.
light combustible materialinto thelire line and deprive the fire of fresh material for its existence. The hoe may be used for raking or hoelng and moving combustible material from the path of the fire down to the dirt or y The object of the, invention is to provide a device ofthis nature having a simple and eflicient construction, one which is reliable in operation, inexpensive to manufacture, durable, and well adapted; for the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in View which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certainnovel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing: a y i Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device embodying my invention;
Figure 2is a sectional view therethrough;
Figure 3 is a plan View of the bristle plate; v y p Figure tisaplan view of the cover plate; and a T Figure 5 is an elevation of one of the bristles. i a
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that l designates what I call a bristle plate for purposes of identification, said plate being-preferably formed from sheet iron andperforated to provide a plurality of openings 2. The bristles 3 are formed from flat steel tempered wire bent at an an gle atone end as shown at a so as to besubstantially L-shape in formation. The bent ends of thebristles are inserted through the 1 and as is shown to advantage in Figure 2 the shorter legs of the bristles are clampedbetween the plate land the plate 5 which I call a cover plate. This cover plate has its edges crimped or bent about the edges of the plate 1 as is indicated to advantage in Figure 2. A strap 6 is attached to the plate 5 preferably by means of bolts 7 and strap and the plates 1 holding the strap in place and also aiding in clamping the two plates together to firmly hold the bristles 3 in place. One end'of the strap 6 is disposed at an angle to its body as shown at 9 and a hoe blade 10 of angular construction is atpached to. the body of the strap 6 and the extension 9 by means of the bolts 8 and bolts 11. The other end of the strap 6 is provided with an angularly extending clamp socket 152 and a tubular handle member 13 is inserted therein and held in place by a bolt 1 1. An auxiliary handle member 15 is provided with a threaded portion-16 intermediate its ends disposed closer to one end than the other.
to be inserted into the tubular member 13 and a coupler 18 is threadedly engaged with a portion '16 and the end of the tubular member13 for holding the auxiliary handle member in place. .Thus it will be seen that 8 passing through the and 5 thereby securely i This auxiliary handle member 9 is adapted the handle consisting of members 15 and 13 may be lengthened or shortened depending upon which end of the auxiliary handle member 15 is inserted in thetubular member 13.
lVhile the preferred embodiment of my invention has beendescribed in detail, it will be understood that I do not Wish to be limited to the particular constructionset forth, since various changes in the form, material, proportions and arrangement of parts, and in the details of construction may be resorted to withoutdeparting from the spirit or scope'of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed is: p
A brush including a flat rigidbristle plate haying rectangular perforations, a plurality of flat-wire bristles fitted in each of vsaid perforations and having laterally directed upper ends, a flat rigid cover plate. disposed upon the bristle plate and having its margin turned about the edges of the' In testimony whereof I a'fi'ix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN A. XVEGNIGR.
Vitnesses FRED D. LORENTSON, H. M. HUOT.
