Be it known that l, Cnnnnns F. Gnscnron'rnn, a citizen of the United CStates, residing' at lilVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindow Screens, ol" which the following1 is a specification.
@ne ot the usual ways ot seeurinfdV the window screens to the window 'traine is by means oi'a tongue and groove construction, but the objection to this is that when there is a desire to wash the windows the screens must be bodily removed, which in some in stances is diticnlt and inconvenient. idoine expedients are shown in the prior art et' providing side stiles of the screen with recesses ,in which springs are placed whereby the screen maybe removed by pressing it transversely to disengage one of the side stiles from its slideway. rlhese expedients are more or less objectionable in view ot the necessarily restricted cross section ot the side stile, because any recesses in the side stile weaken the structure. lit is also old in the prior art to hinge a screen.
The object of my invention is to pro-vide means whereby a window screen may be free to slide on its guideways and at the same time may be moved outward from the window on hinges whereby the window will be free from obstruction during' the operation of washing.
rlhe further object of my invention is to provide a combined sliding and hinged screen, and at the same time maintain the maximum strength of the side stiles.
And with these and other objects in view my invention consists oit the parts and combination of parts as will hereinafter be more fully set lorth.

At predetermined intervals in the length ot' the bead 18 l: cut one wall oit the `groove 20 away to form a notch :22 into which is secured a box 23 carrying a coiled spring` 24 and bolt 25. lit will be noted that the housing does not extend the full length et the llO notch 22; however, the bolt 25 projects sufficiently below the bottoni edge of the housing 23 to constitute an obstruction across that portion of the notch below the housing whereby the slide element 2l cannot accidentally slip out through the notch. vWhen it is desired to swing the screen on its hinge the screen is brought to its lower-most position, in which position the slide piec 2l is opposite or back of the bolt 25. The bolt 25 gives under pressure of the piece 21, whereby the slide piece 2l is free to pass through the notch 22 when the screen is swung on its hinge. ldlhen the screen is swung back into operation the bolt is operated in a similar manner.
By my improved @instruction it will be seen that l have provided a screen and slide base for the same wl'iereby the screen may be moved up and down in its slideways very readily, and when it is desired to wash the window the screen may be readily swung upon its hinge out of the way, and further when it is desired to remove the screens for winter storage this may be done very easily and quickly.
rihe parts constituting my invention are of such construction that they are durable, cheap and simple to manufacture.
While l have selected the specific construction shown in the drawings to illustrate my invention, it will be understood that changes may be made in the details of construction within the scope. of the appending claims.
"he lower end of the bolt 25 is cam-like; therefore by pressing the slide piece 2l aga-inst this cam-like end of the bolt the bolt is automatically moved upward and out of the path of the slide piece 2l so that these slide pieces 2l are free to more upward and forward whenever it is necessary or desirable to swing the screen on its hinges.
lllhat l claim is:
l. rThe combination with a window frame, of an undercut slideway secured to said frame, a resilient slide mounted in said runway, and a frame carried by and hingedly connected to said slideway.
2. The combination with a window frame, of an undercut slideway secured to said frame, a resilient slide mounted in said runway, an arm on said slide whereby the slide may be flexed to attach or detach it to or from the slideway, and a frame hinged to said slidewa'v, whereoy said last `named frame may move in unison Tith or relative to said slideway.
3. rl`he combination with a window frame,
of an undercut slideway secured to said frame, a resilient slide mounted in said slideway, a frame hinged at one side to said slide, and means connecting the other side of the last named frame to the other side of the window frame.

The combination with a window frame, of an undercut slideway secured to said frame, a resilient slide mounted in said slideway, a frame hinged at one side to said slide, a slideway on the other side of said window frame having transverse openings, means; resiliently closing` said openings and a slide secured to said other side of the second frame adapted to enter said slidewajvY through said transverse openings.
The combination with a window frame of an undercut slideway secured to said f ame. a transversely resilient slide mounted in said slideway, and a frame hinged to said slide.
6. ln a device of the character descibed, a slide for a screen or window sash, comprising an elongated open bend member transversely iiexible, shoulders on said slide and a hinge member secured to one side of said slide.
7. ln a device of the character described, a slide for a screen or window sash, comprising an elongated member bent to semitubular form and flexible transversely, an arm extending laterally from and connected te each sido of said semitubular forni. a hinge connected to one of said arms, and a groove formed in said member on each side between the said sen'iitubular form and lateral arms.
8. ln a device of the. character described, an elongated slide having a protuberance on one side, a groove in each side of said protuberance, a hinge secured to said slide.
9. ln a device of the. character described, an elongated slide having protuberance on one side, a groove in each side of said protuberance, a hinge secured to said slide at one side thereof and an arm secured to the other side.
l0. rlhe combination with a window frame, of a slideway secured thereto, a rib extending inwardly from each side of said slideway at the top thereof, of an elongated slide having` transversely flexible protuberance on one side adapted to move in said slideway, a groove at each side of said pro tuberance adapted to receive said ribs, a hinge secured to said slide at one side, a frame secured to said hinge, and an arm on the other side of the slide to Hex the said protuberance.
