MEANQ FQ'R REEN FUR CING TGI'LEL AND OTHER COTtIBS,
Application filedflpril 29, 1924. Serial No. 209,767.
To (all whom it may concern:
lie it known that l, Jenn TrIoMAs FAN- NING, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 7 Thomas tatreet, liloonee Ponds, in the State of Victoria, Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for lteenforcing Toilet and Other Combs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same This invention relates to a hair comb of non-pliable or non-metallic composition or material and including a base or back of standard form, and having ilat parallel dos, and teeth integral with andprojecting from the inner edge of the base, I
The object of the invention is to provide a reen'forcing member adapted to strengthen the base of a comb of this description, and to be securely engaged with the flat sides thereof, wholly by friction and without positive attaching means, so that the base may be quickly and securely engaged with the rcentorcing member, wholly by the operation of sliding the baseinto engagement with said member, and Without variation of the form of the base from the usual or standard form.
I attain this and other related objects by the improved construction hereinafter described and claimed.
Of the accompanying drawings forming a partot this specification,-.-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the reeniorcing member.
The comb includes a base 3, having flat parallel sides, and teeth 4 integral with the base, the comb being of standard formand of any suitable non-pliable and non-metallic composition or material. The reenforcing member shown separately by Figures 1, 2
and 3, comprises .a neclrl, bearing on the outer edge of the base, and gripping jaws 1" integral with and confined by the neck againjstthe major portions of the fiat sides of the base. i
The reenforcing member may be made of any suitable material, such as celluloid, ebonite or metal. I prefer aluminum, because this metal. has suitable strength and lightness.
As shown by Figure 3, the inner surfaces of the jaws 1 are roughened, to enhance their gripping function and prevent accidental movement Off the gripping mel'nber on the base. j
The comb base engaged with the reenforcing member by sliding the base endwise into the space or groove 2, between the jaws 1, this operation causing the roughened surfaces of the aws to firmly engage the fiat sides of the base, so that although the sides are parallel with each. other, as usual in a comb of the standard form, there is no liability ot'accidental displacementof the reenforcing member on the base. The roughened surfaces may be formed by any suitable means, on a fiat blank from which the reenforcing member is formed.
The groove 2 extends continuously from end to end of the reenforcing member, and is open at both ends, so that the comb base may slide endwise into the groove from either: end of the reenforcing member. The roughened surfaces of the aws i are adapted to prevent edgewise withdrawal oi the comb base from the groove.
The reeni orciug member closely fits all portions Off the base inserted in the space or groove 2, so that there areno crevices or spaces liable to receive dirt. The width of the jaws 1 is'such that they do not entirely cover the sides of the comb base, as indi-.
cated by Figure 5, major portions of said sides being covered and minor portions exposed between the lower edges of the jaws and theinner ends of the comb teeth, :so that there is no liability of entanglement of hair with the edges of the jaws. The ends of the jaws are flush with the ends of the base, as shown by Figure 5.
In case the comb base is broken, as indi' .cated at 5 in Figure 4, the parts of the base may be securely connected by the reenforcing member. I claim: The combination with a hair comb which includes a non-metallic base having flat parallel sides and teeth integral with the base, of a reenforcing member of harder material than the base and formed to close- 1y fit the outer edge and the major portions of the fiat sides of the base, said member comprising a neck bearing on the outer edge of the base and gripping jaws confined by the neck against the major portions of the sides of the base and forming the sides of a groove which is open from end to end, said jaws being provided With roughened internal surfaces engaging the base sides, the
name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN THOMAS FANNING.
