INTERLOCKING :DEVICE FO'R- ELEVA'IGRS.
vApplication tiled February yTo Uw/wm t may concer/n.' i
Be it knownfthat I, `FRANK C. Honnne, .linfa citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Interlocking lDevicesfor Elevators, of which the .following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
lVIy invention relates to an improvement in elevator interlocking mechanism.
l-leretofore elevators have been equipped with cooperating `mecha-nism on Vthe elevator car and on the shaft at' the landings, where- `by the `landing gateis prevented from opening unlessithe car be lined with the'landing and whereby when the landingA gate is opened the car islprevented from being operated, for example, as shown in the United States Patent No. 1,298,948, dated April l, 1919'.
Such mechanism has been found highly efficient and satisfactory, `but an objectionable feature is found in that the contact shoe carried by `the car 4and adapted to be acted on by `a shoe or cam on the shaft to `actuate `the car locking mechanism, when a `landing gate `is opened, is liable to, and frequently does, contact with the shoe or cam en the shaft, as `the carpasses a` landing at which no stop is made, since the car shoe is carried in forward position and very little clearance from the cam can be allowed.
Contact of the car shoe with the shoe or cam on the shaft, as the `car passes a landing, results in unpleasant noise.
My invention has for its object the provision of means, in combination with the `iirterloclring mechanism, for withdrawing `the shoe carried by the car when the car is started to insure clearance between it and the shoes or Icams at the landings until the car is stopped, when the shoe will be advanced to its forward position for actuation by the shaft shoe on opening of the landing 0ate. Y i b Having now indicated in a general way the natu-re, purpose `and advantage of my in- Avention, l will proceed to describe apreferred embodiment thereof with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which" lFigQl is a partial face view of an elevator shaft landing gate and of that portion of 2e, 1923. serial Np. 621,196.
`the interlocking mechanism coacting therewith.
Fig. Qis a horizontal section `showing the coacting parts of the interlocking mechanism in plan.
Fig. 3 is an elevation, partly in section, of car slice and `actuating cam on the shaft.
Fig. tais a section through a portion of an elevator car showing in elevation mechanism for locking the controller of an electric elevator.
Fig. `5 is an enlarged view showing in detail construction of the cont-roller lock shown in Fig. fl.
Fig. 6 is a section through part of an elevator car and shaft, showing mechanism for locking the controller of a hydraulic elevator.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged view showing detail construction of the controller lock shown in Fig. 6.
Referring to Figures 1-5: Inside the elevator shaft, at eaclrlanding 00, is secured a plate a which carries-the locking mechanism for the landing `gate y. a represents the Vfloor of anelevator car shownas on a level with a landing. A bar extends downward from the gate over the face of plate a, the end of the bar being adapted to engage in a notch in a locking disc c, when the gate is closed or only slightly open. The position of bar b and disc 0, when the gate is fully closed, is shown in Fig. l.
A lug (Z is positioned on the disc c and the disc c is pressed outwardly from behind by aspring, not shown. The lug CZ is adapted, if it be attempted to open the gate when the car is not at the landing, to contact with the end of an angle piece e secured to plate a and stop the disc c before the bar ZJ can be withdrawn from the disc, thus preventing the gate from being opened.
Disc o carries a cam surface f adapted to underride the free end of a plate k, hinged on a vertical pivot to plate a. A, ridge .11 is formed on the front of plate 7L adjacent its freeend.
If now the plate L be prevented from swinging on its pivot until lug Z has passed the end of angle piece e and itobe attempted to open the door, plate It will, as disc 0 turns, press the disc back against the action of its spring and causes lug d to pass behind angle piece e and continue to turn until Cil another lng (Z on disc 0 contacts with a stop 'f/ on plate a. by which time disc o will have been turned to a position at which rod Z) may freely slide out of its slot and the gate is free to open. In the movement of disc 0 due to the action of cam the free end of plate 71, is swung outwardly, after lug Z has cleared the end of angle plate e.
In order to prevent plate it from swinging until lug (Z has cleared the end of piece c, permitting` the gate to be opened, when the car is level withvthe landing, and in order to effect a locking of the car controller when the gate is opened, certain mechanism is carried by the car.
Beneath the car, and extending in a direction parallel to the edge of the landing ttoor, is secured an angle frame y' to which is secured a bracket to which is hinged an arm 7c having a vertically extending shoe Z formed 011 its end.
rlhe shoe Z is secured to a pin m which extends into a sleeve n, to which it is connected by means of a slot and pin connection 0 and from which it is pressed, outwardly by a spring y). Sleeve n extends through frame j and is pivotally connected to one end of a lever y, fulcrumed in a bracket f1', and the opposite end of which is acted upon by a spring s.
A shaft t is supported beneath the car and provided at each end with a crank n. u. rlhe crank u is connected to sleeve mi by means of a link o, while crank nl', is connected to a bar w, which extends up through the floor of the car and is connected to a centrally pivoted plate 2 in the controller casing 3 by means of a slot et and .pin 5. T he plate 2 carries the car controller handle 6 and is rotated on its pivot when the controller handle is moved forward or backward. A keeper 7 is secured to the plate 2 and is adapted to receive the end of bar to to effect a locking of the controller in olf77 position. y
Assuming now that the car is stationary on a level with a landing: the shoe Z lies opposite to the ridge z' on the face of plate /L and substantially in contact therewith. During the preliminary movements of disc c in opening the landing gate7 the plate 7L will be prevented from swinging by shoe Z, which is held in forward position by the action of spring p. After lug (Z clears the end of angle piece c, the cam surface f acts to swing plate Zt outwardly, which causes shoe Z to be moved back, effecting a backward movement of sleeve n and a rotation of shaft t'. lhen shaft 2f turns, bar w is raised, and since the controller is in neutral position, the end of the bar enters keeper T and prevents movement of the controller handle until the landing gate is again closed and discc rotated back to its gate locking position. l/Vhen disc c reaches its gate locking position, shoe Z and sleeve a are free to move forward under the influence of spring s and shaft t turns back, withdrawing rod to from keeper 7, thus freeing the controller.
Zhen the car is started, the controller handle is moved back or forward and plate 2 is rotated. As plate Q. rotates, pin 5 rides up in slot l, unt-il it reaches the top of the slot when it acts to lift bar cui and through crank u rotates shaft t in a direction to effect a retraction of shoe it through crank it, link o, sleeve n, and pin r. Thus, when the car is in motion, the shoe 7; is retracted and will clear the plate 7L when the car passes the landings. It will now be obvious that in stopping the car at a landing in bringing the controller handle to neutral, plate 2 is turned and bar to lowered, permitting advance of shoe to operative position and positioning bar lw and keeper 7 for locking the controller when the gate is opened.
Referring now to Figures 6 and 7 in which I have illustrated an application of my invention to interlocking mechanism adapted to hydraulic elevators: the mechanism on the shaft and car shown in Figs. 6 and 7 is the same as that in Figures le?) except for the controller lock. I have given similar mechanism similar letters and it will not be herein redescribed.
The sleeve n is connected by means of a link 8 to one arm of a bell crank lever S), the other arm of which is pivotally connected to a bar 10 adapted to enter a slot 11 in a plate 16 secured to the car. The bar 10 is guided and slidably secured to the control lever 1Qr by means of a guide 17. rllhe pivot pin 141- forming connection between bar 10` and bell crank 9 passes through a U-shaped slot 15 in a head formed on the end of bar 10.
Assuming now the car to be stopped opposite a landing: as shoe Z is pressed back, bell crank 9 is turned and bar 10 raised to enter slot 11 and lock the control lever. lVhen the car is started, control shaft 13 is rotated causing plate 16 to turn and pin 11 rides up in the U-sliaped slot 15, causing bell crank 9 to turn and effect a retraction of shoe Z. lVhen the car is again stopped by bringing the control lever 1. to neutral, shoe Z is advanced and the control lever is locked when shoe Z is pushed back as a result of opening the landing gate.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
