VALVE ROGKER ARM.

Be it known that I, VICTOR H. KELLEY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Dane and State 5 of llisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve Rocker Arms, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in valve rocker arms for valve in the head automobile engines; and the objects of my invention are, first, to prevent noise, and reduce the shock and vibration on the motor caused by the necessary clearance between the rocker arms and the valve stems as now constructed; second, to construct a rocker arm in two parts so as to reduce the .012 of an inch usual clearance between the end of the rocker arm and valve stem to one third of that amount, by placing the adjusting means between the two main members of the arm; third, to have the adjust nient members accessible and convenient to manipulate. -5 l attain these objects by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. 1, is' a plan;

A left or adjustable member 1, a right member 2, an adjusting screw 4, a bronze sleeve 8, a clamp nut 5, a tension spring 6 and depending members and 15 constitute my device. The member 1 is annular at its right end, as shown in Fig. 3, the width of the ring being approximately one half of the entire device, a deep section web extending to the left from the ring joins an .inverted cup 7 adapted to receive and retain centrally located the upper end of a push rod S, and upon the upper portion of the ring to the left of the vertical center a threaded boss 9 is located, and a depending member 10 extends downward from the lower outer surface of the ring slightly to the left of the boss 9 and is grooved adjacent its lower end for attaching one end of the spring G.

equal to the combined width of members 1 and 2, and adapted for combining and assembling the same as a working unit. The member 2 is annular at its left end and is divided with a space between the rings equal to the width of the annular portion of the member 1, and should be a working lit on the outer ends of the sleeve 3, and the member 1 should be a drive fit on the central portion of the sleeve. The ring portions of the said member 2 are united by a casing 11, which adds strength and rigidity between the rings and an outwardly extend ing portion which terminates in a foot plate 12 adapted to contact and rest upon the top of the valve stem 13. A boss 14 is located on the top and between the rings in longitudinal alignment with the adjusting screw Ll, and a depending member 15 provides a means for attaching the other end of the spring 6, thereby connecting the two halves of the rocker arm below the center of oscillation of the same. The spring G, as may be seen in Fig. 3 keeps the outer end of member 1 by means of the cup 7 in contact with the push rod 8, and also keeps the foot plate at the outer end of member 2 in contact with the valve stem 13, and the clearance of .O12 of an inch usual between the rocker arm and the top of the valve stem is provided for by a movement of .004 of an inch between the adjusting screw point la and the face of the boss 4f; therefore the small dis tance that the screw 4 travels before taking up the clearance, andthe rigidity of its mountings, make the movements of thc rocker noiseless, and the convenient location of the clearance adjusting screw 41e, saves much time in adjusting the valves on any valve in the head motor.-
