Description
W. 8. LEE.
ROCKER ARM FOR VALVE IN HEAD MOTORS.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 13, I919.
Patented Dec. 21, 1920.
A TTORNE Y6.
WILLIAM S. LEE, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
UNITED STATES ROCKER-ARM FOR VALVE-IN-HEAD MOTORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1920.
Application filed September 13, 1919. Serial No. 323,668.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. LEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rocker-Arms for Valve-In- Head Motors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in rocker arms for valve in head motors, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
In motors of the valve in head type having rocker arms which are operated by push rods, there is frequently a good deal of noise which is caused by the fact that there is play between parts which permits them to chatter.
An object of my invention is to provide a rocker arm which is comparatively noiseless, due to the fact that it contains a spring which takes up the play.
A further object of my invention is to provide a two-part rocker arm having a spring between the two parts, said spring being housed within the body portion of the rocker arm in such a manner as to be securely retained.
A further object of my invention is to provide a rocker arm consisting of two parts having a spring with means for adjusting the tension to which the spring is subjected.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a side View of the device, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a rocker arm consisting of two parts 1 and 2. The part 1 is provided with a central extension 3,which fits in between extensions 4 on the part 2, so as to form a hinge joint,
On the upper side of the portion 1 is a boss 6, while the portion 2 has a boss 7 facing the boss 6. The boss 6 is provided with a recess 8, while the boss 7 is provided with a registering recess 9. The member 2 is provided with a recess 10 arranged to receive the spherical head of an adjusting nut 11 on a push rod. 12. The latter bears a lock nut 13.
The opposite end of the two-part rocker arm is arranged to engage a valve stem 14 for operating the valve. Within the registering recesses 8 and 9 is disposed a stiff spiral spring 15.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood.
The push rod is designed to be operated in the usual manner, and causes the rocking of the two-part rocker arm to operate the valve stem 14. The spring 15 will take up any play between the parts, so that the action will be relatively quiet and theusual chattering will be eliminated. In order to adjust the tension to which the spring 15 is subjected, it is only necessary to turn the nut 11 at the top of the push rod, and then to lock the nut in its adjusted position by means of the lock nut 13.
I claim:
The combination with a push rod of a rocker arm comprising a portion arranged to engage a valve stem, said portion being provided with a central extension, a second portion being provided with a hemispherical socket and having a pair of extensions arranged to straddle the first named extension, a pivot member arranged to extend through said extensions, whereby the two parts are hinged together, each of the portions having a recess arranged to face the recess in the opposing portion, a spiral spring disposed in said registering recess, and an adjusting nut carried by said push rod for varying the tension placed on said spiral spring, said adjusting nut having a spherical head disposed within the hemispherical socket of said second portion.
WILLIAM S. LEE.
