To an whom it-army come 1 71 Be it'lrnown that I, BERNARD M. FINE, a citizen ot tl'ie United States, residing at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain-mew and-useful Improvements in Presses, of which I declare the following to be a full, clean-and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in presses and has to do, more particularly, with. pressesof "the'general type employed for repressingbricks,;or similar material, which have been roughly formed in a pre vious operation.
Practicallyall presses in use, at the present ti1ne,for repressingbricks are hand operated'andaro very slow and inefficient in operation. Theoperator-moves a closure to one side, opening the mold chamber grasps a brick to be pressed, inserts it in the mold cl ian'lber, moves the closure to position 'to close the-moldchamber, operates the -liand-lever which applies"pressnrmto the brick in theinold c'hambeninoves the closure to one side to openthe mold chamberyand then-removes the pressed brick. These many handoperations slow downthe operation of the machine and decrease its output very imiterially. I

Referring to the numbered partstf the drawings, 1 have illustratedaniachine em bodying my invention and including a My invention framework, 10, mounted upon supporting wheels or rollers, 11, so that it may be moved from place to place without difficulty. This framework carries a part, 12, forming the side walls of the mold chamber. The bottom wall of the mold chamber is formed by the head, 14, of the plunger, 13, which is mounted so as to be reciprocated within the mold chamber. The top wall of the mold chamber is formed by a closure plate, 15, which is carried by a closure yoke, having the legs, 17, and the cross member, 16. The closure plate, 15, and the plunger, 13, are moved toward each other in the operation of the machine in order to exert pressure upon the brick, or other material to be pressed, which is confined in the mold. chamber. To secure such movement of the parts, the legs, 17, of the closure yoke are pivotally connected to the actuating lever, 23, and the lever, or a part carried by it, engages the. lower end of the plunger to exert an upward pressure thereon. 1n the machine shown, the halfround bearing seats, 18, are formed at the lower ends of the legs, 17, fitting the laterally-extending trunnions, 20, on the actuating lever, 23. The bearing members, 19, have half-round seats complementary to the seats, 18, and these bearing members are yieldingly connected to the lower ends of the legs, 17, by the bolts, 21, which extend from the lower ends of the legs, 17, through the bearing members. it), and the springs, 22, disposed on said bolts between the members, it), and the nuts, 19, screwed on the ends of the bolts. The bearing seats, 18, and the members, 1%), together form l'iearings which receive the trunnions, 20, on the actuating lever and form a pivotal connection between the closure yoke and said lever. This counection is yielding, however, so that, in case an oversize brick is placed in the mold chamher, the connection between the lever and the closure yoke will yield and prevent the breaking of the machine. Notches, 26, are provided in the upper edge of the actuating lever which receive the trnnnions, 27, of a roller, 28, which bears against the foot, 29, on the lower end of the plunger, 13. A cross bar, 25, extends between the sides of the frame, 10, and serves as a, fulcrum for the lever, 23, when the closure plate, 15, is not in engagement with the top of the mold chamber. A nose, 2 1, at the end of the lever is adapted to engage said cross bar.
The lever, 23, is power-actuated, being operated by the driven shaft, 10, which is suitably journaled in the frame of the machine. This shaft is driven from the electric motor, 33, through a train of reducing gearing including the pinion, 35, on the armature shaft, 3%, the gear, 36, on the stub shaft, 37, which meshes with said pinion,
and the pinion, .2738, on said stub shaft, mesl1 ing with the gear, 39, fast on said shaft, -10. A bell-crank lever, @14, is loosely mounted on said shaft, 40, and one arm of said bellcrank is connected to the end of the actuating lever, 23, by a link, 30, which is pivotally connected to the actuating lever, at 31. and to the bell-crank arm, at 32. The bellcrank, 4 1, is connected to the shaft, 10, so as to rotate therewith, by suitable clutch mech anism. In the machine illustrated, this clutch mechanism comprises a disk, 41, which is fast on the shaft, l0, and provided with a plurality of peripheral notches, a2, and a pawl, 4-5, which is pivoted, at 4.8, to the arm 43, of the bell-crank, 44. This pawl has a head, 46, adapted to engage in any one o t the notches in the disk, 11, and the pawl is norn'ially held in such position that said head, 46, engages in one of said notches, by a spring, 75. The pawl is also provided with a tail. -17, by which it may be withdrawn from engagement in the manner to he described hereinafter.
It will be observed that, due to the pivotal connection between the closure yoke and the actuating lever, the former may be swung to one side to the position shown in Fig. 4, to permit the removal of the brick from the mold chamber. ltt is desired to provide means whereby the clutch mechanism between the shaft, -10, and the actuating lever, 23, is disconnected when the closure yoke is swung to the open position and whereby said clutch is automatically connected when the closure. yoke is swung to closed position. l have accomplished this by providing a trip, it), which is'slidably mounted in a portion, 50, of the frame, 10, so that, when the trip is projected, its nose is in position to engage the tail, -17, of the pawl when the latter is carried past by the rotation of the shaft, 10. This trip, 19, is normally held in projected position by a spring, 51, on the stem, extending rearwardly from said trip, said spring being compressed between the portion, 50, of the frame and the nut, 52 at the end of said stem. The trip, 49, carries a pin, 54:, which extends through a slot, 55, to the outside of the frame. A tripwithdrawing link, 56, is pivotally connected, at 57, with an arm, 58, depending from one of the bearing members, 19. This link extends forwardly and has an arm, 59, carrying an adjustable stop screw, (30, which is adapted to engage the pin, 54:, to hold the trip .in retracted position, when the closure yoke is in closed. position as shown in Fig. 1. hen the closure yoke is in open posi tion, the link is thrown forwardly, due to its connection with the arm, 58, so that the trip moves under the pressure of spring, 51. to projected position.
It is desirable to disconnect the clutch mechanism automatically after the belt crank has completed one revolution with the shat-t, 40. In order to accomplish this,

At such times, the trip is always in projected position and it is not necessary "torthe arm, 63, to strike the arm, 61, and lift the link.

move the pressedbrick and inserta new one to be pressed. The drive for the actuating lever iii-controlled by the positionot the closure for the mold chamber, and 1t 1S automatically connected when the closure is moved to closed position.
In somecases, it is desirable to have a slow motion for a part of the stroke ot the plunger in order to apply the final pressure to the material slowly. in such cases, in order to avoid slowing down the machine too much, I find it desirable to provide a taster motion for another part of the plunger stroke. Ihave accomplished this, in the present machine, by the modified construction shown in G and 7, in which I introduce a pair of elliptic gears in the train of reducing gearing leading to the driven shaft,
40. The gear, 89, instead of being on the shaft, 4:0, is mounted on a stub shaft, 80. to which is keyed the elliptic near, 81, meshing with the elliptic gear, Fast on the driven shaft, 41-0. As a result of this arrangement of nearing, the latter part of the pn-rssnrc stroke and the first part the return stroke are much slower than the first part of the pressure stroke and the last part of the return stroke. The connections between the driven shaft and the actuating lever may be the same as in the preferred form of my invention but I am not to be restricted to such arrangement.
I am aware that the machinedescribed in this specification may be changed considerably without departing from the spirit of my invention and, theretore, I desire to claim my invention broadly, as indicated by the appended claims.

A press of the kind described comprising a. mold chamber adapted to receive the material to be pressed, means for opening and closing said chamber, pressure means acting on the material in said chamber, a driven shaft, operating connections between said shaft and pressure means including a clutch, and means, operated automatically when the chamber is closed. for actuating said clutch to connect the shaft and pressure means.

A press of the kind described compris a mold chamber adapted to receive the material to be pressed, means for opening and closing said mold chamber, pressure means acting on the material in said chamber, and including an actuating lever, a driven shaft, and means for automatically connecting said lever to said shaft when the chamber is closed.

A press of the kind described comprising a mold chamber adapted to receive the material to be pressed, means for opening and closing said chamber, pressure means acting on the material in said chamber and including an actuating lever, a driven shaft, a crank arm journaled on said shaft and connected to said lever, and means automatically connecting said crank arm to the shaft to rotate therewith when the chamber is closed.

A press of the kind described comprising a mold chamber adapted to receive the material to be pressed, means for opening and closing said chamber, pressure means acting on the material in said chamber and including an actuating lever, a driven shaft, a disk fixed thereon and having a plurality of peripheral notches, an arm journaled on said shaft and having one end connected to said lever, a pawl carried by the opposite end of said. arm, and means for automatically moving said pawl into engagement with one of the notches of said disk when the mold chamber is closed.
10. A press of the kind described comprising a mold chamber adapted to receive the material to be pressed, means for opening and closing said chamber, pressure means acting on the material in said chamber, a driven shaft, means for auton'iatically connecting said shaft and pressure means when the chamber is closed, and means for automatically disconnecting said shaft and pressure means after a predetermined movement of the pressure means.
11. A press of the kind described comprising a mold chamber adapted to receive the material to be pressed, means for opening and closing said chamber, pressure means acting on the material in said chamber, a driven shaft, operating connections between said shaft and pressure means including a clutch, means, operated automatically when the chamber is closed, for actuating said clutch to connect the shaft and pressure means, and means, operated automatically after a predetermined movement of the pressure means, for actuating the clutch to disconnect the shaft and pressure means.
12. A press of the kind described comprising a mold chamber adapted to receive the material to be pressed, means for open ing and closing said mold chamber, pressure means acting on the material in said chamber and including an actuating lever, a driven shaft, means for automatically connecting said lever to said shaft when the chamber is closed, and means for automatically disconnecting the lever from said shaft after a predetermined movement of the lever.
13. A press of the kind described comprising a mold chamber adapted to receive the material to be pressed, means for opening and closing said chamber, pressure means acting on the material in said chamber and including an actuating lover, a driven shaft, a crank arm journaled on said shaft and connected to said lever, means automatically connecting said crank arm to said shaft to rotate therewith when the chamher is closed, and means for automatically disconnecting said crank arm from the shaft after a predetermined movement of the lever.

A press of the kind described comprising a mold chamber, a plunger forming the bottom wall of said chamber, a lever engaging and actuating said plunger, a closure yoke straddling said chamber and. having its legs pivotally connected to said lever, a closure carried by said yoke and forming the top wall of said chamber, a driven shaft, a disk fixed on said shaft and having a plurality of peripheral notches, an arm journaled on said shaft and having one end con nected to said lever, a pawl pivoted on the other end of said arm and adapted to enin any one of said notches, a sliding trip normally spring-pressed into POSlJ/lOIl to engage the tail of the pawl and withdraw the latter from engagement with said disk,
and a trip-withdrawing link connected to one of the legs of said yoke and having a portion engaging said trip, whereby, when the yoke is moved to chaniber-closing position, the trip is automatically withdrawn from the. path of the pawl.

A press of the. kind described comprising a mold chamber, a plunger forming the bottom wall of said chamber, a lever engaging and actuating said plunger, a closure yoke straddling said chamber and having its legs pivotall y connected to said lever, a closure carried by said yoke and forming the top wall of said chamber, a driven shaft, a disk fixed on said shaft and having a plurality of peripheral notches, an arm journaled on said shaft and having one end connected to said lever, a pawl pivoted on the other end of said arm and adapted to engage in any one of said notches, a sliding trip normally spring-pressed into position to engage the tail of the pawl as the latter moves past it to withdraw said pawl from engagement with the disk, a trip-withdrawing link connected to one of the legs of said yoke and having a portion engaging said trip, whereby, when the yoke is movedto chamber-closing position, the trip is automatically withdrawn from the path of the pawl, and an arm fixed on said shaft and adapted to engage a portion of said link to release said trip and permit it to move into the path of said pawl.

A press of the kind described comprising a mold chamber adapted to: receive the material to be pressed, an actuating lever, a closure yoke straddling said chamber and having its legs pivotally connected to said lever, a closure carried by said yoke and forming the top wall of said chamber, a plunger forming the bottom wall of said chamber and actuated by said lever, a driven shaft, and actuating connections between said shaft and lever including a pair of elliptic gears.
38. A press of the kind described, comprising a mold chamber, a plunger forming the bottom wall of said chamber, a lever engaging and actuating said plunger, a closure yoke straddling the chamber and having its legs pivotally connected to said lever, a
closure carried by said yoke and forming the top wall of said chamber, a driven shaft, a disk fixed on said shaft and provided with a plurality of peripheral notches, an arm jo-urnaled on said shaft and having one end connected to said lever, a pawl pivoted on the opposite endo'l said arm and adapted to engage in any one of the notches of said disk, a trip movable into position to engage the tail of the pawl and withdraw the latter from engagement with said disk, and means, actuated by movement of said yoke to ehamber-closing position, for withdrawing said trip from operative position.
