UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. TRUSLOl/V, OF LEWISBURG, VIRGINIA.
FENDER r03 FIREPLAGES.
7 Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,362, dated July 15, 1856.
T all whom it may concern place with the panels down and the fenders secreted from view, and, Fig. 2 is a front elevation showing one of the fenders out of the recess and the panel up.
My invention consists in an improvement in fenders or screens for fire places by which the fenders shall always be at hand and convenient for use and yet so covered or secreted as not to be observed when out of use or to mar the appearance of the fire fronts.
The description is as follows. A is a jointed or hinged fender which may be made of sheet metal or wire work and which is hung upon hinges at the joint B within a recess D in the jambs of the fire front.
E is a spring attached to the back wall of the recess, the purpose of which is to press the fender out when wanted for use.
F is a sliding panel covering the fender and recess when the panel is down. The panel is represented as up and the fender out of the recess on the right side of Fig. 2 and on the left side the panel is down and the recess closed secreting the fender and spring from view and presenting a neatly finished front. On putting away the fender it is folded into the recess and pressed against the spring while the panel is brought down to cover it, the panel sliding up and down in grooves prepared for the purpose. When the fender is wanted for use the panel is raised and the fender starts out from the recess by the action of the spring, and is extended in front of the fire.
What I claim as my invention and improvement in screens or fenders for fire places, is
The hinged-folded screen or fender within the recess in the jambs, in combination with the spring in rear of the screen, and the sliding panel in front of the same, in the manner herein above set forth.
