nnnr'r GEAR.
Application filed April 17, 1922. Serial No. 554,243.
To k/ZZ whom 'may concern.:
Be it known that I, HnniifmN C. Punten, citizen of the United States, residing at Blue Island,`in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain `new and useful Improvement in Draft Gears, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
My invention relates `to car structures and particularly to draft gears vemployed therein that contain keys as component parts thereof. In accordance with the invention, draft gear carriers are assembled with the draft sills, these carriers having openings receiving the ends of the keys and applied bottom plates whereby lthe draft gear may be assembled with the balance of the car stl-l'icti'u'e from beneath the draft sills.
The invention will be fully explained by reference `to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred embodiment thereof in which Fig. 1 is a plan view with parts broken away and parts shown in section, of a portion of a car structure eInlna-cing some of the features of the invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, it beingl assumed that the center sill which is omitted in Fig. 1 is present in that figure for the purpose of the illustration contained in Fig. 2; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line SMS of Fig. 1; Fig. 1 illustrates a portion of one of the center sills, an angle iron assembled with this sill and the body portion of one of the draft gear carriers assembled with said center sill and angle irons; and Fig. 5 is a sectional View on line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Like parts are indicated by similar rliar acters of reference throughout the different figlufes.
rrrThe car structure shown includes two` wooden renter sills 1 and 2. Angle irons 5 have their upright sides secured to the center sills by means of the bolts 21 and their horizontal sides secured to the center sills by the bolts 7. There are two such angle irons at each end of the car structure and the hori- Zontal sides thereof are desirably interposed between the corresponding body bolster and the center sills.`
A wooden end sill 9 is at each end o-f the car, the center sills being in abutting engagement therewith. There is also a bumper block 10 which supportsa carrier l1 for supportimg` the coupler shank 12. This coupler shank is assembled with the coupler yoke 1?). Keys 141, 15 pass through the coupler yoke and beneath the wooden center sills, the ends of the keys being upon the exteriors of said sills and having exterior motion resisting springs 16 interposed therebetween. A motion resisting spring 17 is shown between the center sills and between the followers 18, 19. These followers are surrounded by the coupler yoke and the keys pass therethrough. The keys 14 and are supported upon the carriers that are assembled with the center sills, preferably through the intermediation of angle irons 20, which are secured to said sills by horizontal bolts 21, and upright bolts 22 that pass through the center sills. The :arriers includebody portions 23 formed with open* ings or recesses 2a through which the keys pass. The body portions 28 of the carriers are formed with draft lug portions 25 and 2G which are engaged by the outer and inner keys 14 and 15. The carriers also linclude plates 27 whichV areheld in assembly with the body portions of the carriers by means of/the aforesaid bolts 22 which, with bolts of) removed, `the entire draft gear, including the coupler shank, the coupler yoke and the motion `resisting mechanism assembled with these parts, may be placed in position after their complete assembly has beeneffected, it being merely necessary to raise the draft gear equipment to a position in which the keys will be received in the openings 24 in the body portions of the carriers whereafter the plates 27 may be bolted in position.
I form the body portions of the carriers with outwardly extending depending lugs 2S and inwardly extending depending lugs 29 which are substantially in the planes of the corresponding plates 27. These lugs reinforce these plates when the draft gear is subject to pulling and pushing strains of sufficient degree to move the outer keys 141 inwardly or the inner keys 15 outwardly` In the construction illustrated the wood en center sills are further cut away to receive the carriers and to place the keys in line with the coupler Shanks. As a result, other outwardly projecting shoulders` 30 are provided at thebottom of the wooden center sills which tend to weaken the saine. To strengthen the sills at these shoulders I provide the body portions of the draft gear carriers with inwardly projecting extensions 31 which underlie the shoulders, the horip support the carriers. W'hen these plates 4are out of place and when the carrier 1l is zontal sides oit the angle irons 5 being` preterably interposed between these extensions and theI center sills. The angle irons 20, in addition to taking part in supporting the draft gear carriers7 also serve to strengthen the center sills at the shoulders Si() against lateral strains. The bodies of the dra'tt `@ear carriers thus have abutting engagement at their inner ends with the shoulders $3() upon the center sills. These carrier bodies are extended outwardly snlieiently to ha ve abutting engagement with the end sills.
The advantages of the various eharaeteristics oit a ear Constructed in accordance with my invention will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art, and while l prefer to embrace all of these characteristirs in the same structure, the invention not to be thus limited.
Claims relatingto ear Construction and Ytramiirg; diselosed herein form the subject matter o` a division o't' this application tierial No. (375.078. filed Nov. 1G, 1923.
lWhile i have herein shown and partienlarly described the preferred embodin'ient ot my invention l do not wish to be limited to the preeise details o'lE construction shown as changes may readily be made without departing from the spirit ot myrinvention.
but having thus described my invention l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:-
1.111 a ear structure, the Combination with two dra'tt sills; ol a dralit `gear havini;v keys as component parts thereof; and two dratt gear carriers assen'ibled with said sills and having openings receiving the ends otl said keys and including applied bottom plates whereby the draft gear may be assembled with the balance of the Car strueture from beneath the draft sills.
2. In a Car structure, the combination with two draft sills; of a draft gear having keys as component parts thereof; and two draft gear carriers assembled with said sills each having a body portion and applied bottom plates between which ends ot the keys are disposed, said body portion having openings therein for receiving,` the keys, the central part ot each body portion having a depending outwardly lufojeetingr lng;l and a depending' inwardly projecting lugl substantially in the plane ot the corresponding bottom plate to supplement the plate in retaining the keys in position.
In wit-ness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this fourth day ot April A. D., '1922.
HERMA N C. PRTEBE.
