This invention relates to umbrellas and has particular reference .to an improvement in the means of connection.betweenthe ele-y ments which constitute the frame.

4At the present time it is the common prac` tice to pivot the spreaders and ribs to the runner and rib bearing. member by means of very thin wires, which, in a limited space of time rust and wear Vunder the constant strain of opening and closing the umbrella,

thus necessitating replacement of the .wires and often the discarding of the entire umbrella. K. y

It is therefore an object of. the present in- `ventieu to provide at the pivotal points of the ribs and spreaders and at the points of connection between said elements, means for reducing friction and wear in order to increase the life and usefulness of the frame to a maximum. .y

` As a further object the invention contemplates means .for strengthening vthe frame structure at the points of connection between the elements which go to makeup the frame. The invention further `contemplates an umbrella frame structure which embodies staff. having detachable portions at theoppositeends wheieby vthe length of the` umbrella may be reduced to' allow for the packing of the same in a suitcase or other similar carrying case. f

The invention furthermore contemplates an improved umbrella frame which does not materially increase 4 the cost Yof production, `which .is strong and durable in its construction and `which easily operated without binding or sticking. o I

Vith the above recited and other objects iii-view, the invention resides inthe novel construction set forth in the following speci lication, particularly pointed out in. the ap pended. claims and illustrated inthe accompanying dra-wing, it being understoodthat the right is reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein to the full extent indicated bythe general meaning of the terms inv which the claims are expressed.

16 receives .the threadedl extremity -11 ofthe hearings 24 and a closure-plate 25 is insert` able in the outer end of the socketv to lie flush with the side face of the fhead.- An opening 26 disposed axially with respect to andcommunicating with the socket 123 is also disposed inalignment with 'a central opening 27 in the cover plate. The rib heads 2() are snugly iitted in the slots 18 with the aligned openings 2G and 27 registering with .90 staff. The stationary bearing sleeveis prefthe passageway or groove 17. Bearing` pins 2S are inserted through the openings 26 and 27 prior to the assembly of the rib heads with the bearing member ,and the opposite ends oi said bearing pin are tapered as at 29. After the ribs are assembled with the stationary bearing sleeve 15, a cover disk 30 of the same diameter `as the rbearing sleeve 15 is arranged thereover. The cover disk is provided with a centrally threaded opening 31. The threaded extremity 11 extends approximately halt way through the central threaded opening- 1G and a statt extremity or section 32 is threaded through the thread-- ed opening 31 of the cover disk and into threaded opening 16 of the bearing member 15. VA `runner consisting of a thimble 33 provided with a threaded end 34 is screwed into the 'movable bearing sleeve 35 which is of substantially identical construction to the stationary bearing sleeve. The spreaders j designated by the character 36 are provided respectively at their opposite ends with heads 37 and 38, the former being mounted between the spaced ears 39 oi' a bearing member 40 which is riveted as at 41 to the ribs; the latter head 38 is received in the slots of the movable bearing; sleeve ot the spreader and each of said heads is provided with a ball race and ball bearings identical with the construction described for the heads 2() of the rib members.

` From the foregoing1 it will be appreciated that an umbrella .trame structure has been provided in which the connections and pivotal' points of the ribs and spreader mem- Y, bers vare euarded ae'ainst friction and wear to increase their length of usefulness and at the same time render the operation of opening' and closing the umbrella free from bindingA or sticking'. It is also evident that the handle 14 and the terminal 32 of the statt may be detached for reducing the length of the umbrella whereby the same may be packed in a suitcase or other carrying case.

In the modified adaptation of the invention illustrated in Fig. G, a single continuous annular bearingl pin 42 is employed in lieu ot the separate bearing pins 28, the same being` of' a proper diameter to properly lie within the groove or passageway 17 of the stationary and movable bearing sleeves 1:7 and 351 l In the modified itorm ot the invent-ion illustrated in Fre. 7 the spreader or rib heads 20', 3T or 38 i'nay he used without the ball hearing, it desired.

Inthe moditieations illustrated in Figs. S and 9. the thimble l5 and the stati' extremity 32 may have a friction tit in the movable and stationarybearing` sleeves and 15.

In the modified form illustrated in Fig. 10 the bearing sleeves in lieu ot having the cover plate may be constructed in two sections 43 and 44, the confronting faces ot which are provided with complementary annular grooves ot passageways 45 for the bearing pin or pins 2S and 42. In this instance the sleeve sections are provided with con'iplementary central threaded openings 4G.

I claim:

1. An anti-friction connection for the pivotally joined elements of an umbrella trame, comprising a member having spaced bearing ears carried by one of the `joined elements, a pivot extending` through said ears, a member carried by a second trame elcment and disposed between said bearing` ears, said latter member being' provided with a socketcd portion havin.;r a concentl'ic aperture and a concentrically apertured closure plate tor the socketed portion through which apertures the pivot extents the said socketed portion deininfr a ball race, and antifriction balls within said race disposed around the pivot pin.

2. An uinbrella trame including` ribs, spreaders, a statt and stationary and movable bearing sleeves associated with the statt, said stationary bearing sleeve having circumferentially spaced bearing ears, a pivot extending;r across each pair ot bearing, ears, a member carried by each rib and disposed respectively between the pairs of bearing ears, said member being` provided with a recess in one side thereof having a concentric bcaringr aperture in its side wall and said rece s constituting a ball race, a cover plate fitted within the open side ot the recess provided with a concentric aperture in alignment with the tirst aperture and said apertures receiving therethrough the pivot, andI a plurality of anti-friction balls within the recess Vand interposed between the periphery thereof and the periphery of the pivot pin.

3. In an umbrella frame including ribs, spreaders, a statt and stationary and movable bearing sleeves associated with the statt, of anti-friction joints for pivotally connecting' the elements ot' said frame, comprising :l member having` spaced bearing ears carried by one element of each joint a member carried by the second element ot' each joint includingf a headed portion having' a recess in one oititaf-lides, a closure plate disposed within the open side ol the recess, said closure plate and the opposite wall ot' the recess ha vine` aligned apertures, a pivot pin extendingtherethrough and received at its opposite ends b v the spaced hearingr ears, and a plurality of anti-friction balls within said recess and disposed between the pcriphery oi the pivot pin and the walls ot thi` recess.
