IMPROVEMENT IN BED-LOUNGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,589, dated July 28, 1874; application filed May 15, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, LEoNIDUs H. MoGLEL- LAN and J OHN KING, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inBed-Lounges; and we do hereby declare that tional elevation, showing devices for adjusting the head-rests.

Like letters in all the figures of the drawings indicate like parts. This invention relates to a bed-lounge, having the extension part thereof provided with a leg constructed so that when the extension is folded down to convert the bed into a lounge, the said leg will join with and form a part of the back Where it terminates at the foot of the lounge, thus providinga convenient and steady support for the extension of the lounge when used as a bed, without in any way detracting from the general finish or appearance of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.

The body A of the lounge and the extension B thereof are constructed each with sides and ends to form a shallow box or receptacle to receive the mattress, which extends across the joint made by the extension with the lounge. The extension is hinged to the front side of the lounge, and lies snugly down upon it when not used as a bed, and is provided with the leg a, which is attached to the side of the extension. The back 0 of the lounge, where it terminates at the foot thereof, and the leg c of the extension, are so constructed, in relation to each other, that the leg will join with, and form a part of, the back when the said extension is folded down to convert the bed into a lounge. The head I) of the lounge, in connection with the leg, forms the support for the extension when the lounge is converted into a bed. A small knob or projection may be attached on the top of the head to protect the material with which it is covered from being soiled or injured when resting upon the floor to support the extension. D D are headrests, one of which is hinged to the bottom of the lounge, and the other to the bottom ofthe extension, and provided with spring-ratchets 0 c, the ends of which are attached centrally to the upper edges of the head-rests, and arranged to engage with the pawls d d, attached on the inside of the end plates of the lounge and its extension. To give the ratchets play enough in adjusting the head-rest, or to let them lie flat down, openings are made in the bottom of the lounge and the extension for the ratchet to pass through. The head-rests are elevated by catching hold of the pieces of tape or leather 6 6 attached at their upper ends, and held at the point desired by the spring of the ratchets causing them to engage with the pawls, and are lowered by pressing the ratchets in, which releases them from the pawls.

Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A bed-lounge in which the folding section B is provided with the leg or foot 01, constructed and arranged to form a part of the back 0, when the section B is folded on the base A,

substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
