Be it hnown that I, RALriI E. Bornes, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. "Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Sink Strainer, of which the following is a specification.` y

My invention relates fto improvements in sink strainers.

Y The present sink strainers in general domestic use are slow to drain and occasion considerable inconvenience, due to the drippings which fall therefrom during the act of emptying the same. .i i I to pro- It is the object oi' this invention vide an improved receptacle for kitchen refuse adapted to drain freely in horizontal receiving position and to trap the retained liquid waste when tilted from the horizon# tal. lt will be understood that a strainer of this type isset removably, usually in the corner of the sink, at a convenient height for water containing potato peelings or other solid matter to be poured through the strainer so that the liquid will run away through the sink drain and the solid matter remain in the strainer. Subsequently the strainer is lifted out of its place and itscontents dumped into the `garbagjge pail, but in doing' this a trail of liquid is usually left across the kitchen floor, since draining goes on for some time. The purpose of'my invention is to enable the portable strainer to be tilted atter it has been taken from its place, so that liquid will noty continue to drain from it and will he hept from dripping onto the Hoor as the strainer is carried to its` duniiping place.

With the foregoing and other objects in View, which will appear inthe following description, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed. i i

ln the drawings, Fig. l is a perspective view of a strainer embodying my invention; Figs. 2 and 3 are longitudinal, sectional views thereof, the former illustrating the strainer in receiving draining position', while the latter illustrates said strainer tilted from the horizontal and in position to trap the drip therefrom and Fig. fl is a plan view of a strainer showing au alternate toi-m of my invention.

Having reference to the drawings, it will be observed that my improved strainer comprises a bottom A, two sidewalls l0 and an outwardly bowed endwall l1 forminga three cornered receptacle for waste. The side-- walls l0 for a ninetyl degree angle and tit snugly against the sides of a sink in a corner` thereof. The structure is preferably stamped from a single piece of sheet metal, the walls being slightly rounded at their junctions as shown and the upper margins thereof beaded as at l2 to enhance the appearance ofthe article and increase its strength.

`The draining portion 13 adjacent the endwall l1 merges into the same and together with said endwall and the adacent section of the sidewalls l0 forms a pocket or trap `l into which the retained liquid waste is drained upon tilting the strainer end downward, as shown in Fig. 3. ln this position, the draining portions 13 slope downward toward the pocket B,'the drip flowing trom one portion 13 to the next andnally lodging in said pocket. The draining ofliquid waste over said portions l?, and into the pocket B simulates the flow of; water from one shingle to another in its passage down a shingled roof and into gutters at the eaves.

YFrom the foregoing it will be understood that my improved strainer will function rapidly 1n horizontal, receiving position and that the discharge therefrom of any retainedV oi. l also contemplate omitting the webs 14 in another form, thereby .increasing the draining capacity ot the strainer.

Further changes in the specitic forms of my invention, as herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing 'from the spirit otl my invention.

Having described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to protect by Letters latent is:

l. A portable strainer adapted to stand in horizontal position for draining its contents and to be tilted into inclined position tor conveying the residue to a dumping place, said strainer comprising side walls tor confining its contents against lateral escape in any direction, and a bottom which is provided with impervious drainingl portions inclined in one direction when the strainer is in normal horizontal position and in the opposite direction when the strainer is tilted, .said bottom having an outlet between the adjacent edges ot each two ot said draining portions and said edges overlapping enough l'or one portion to receive drainage from the other when the strainer is tilted.

3. A removable triangular strainer for the corner of a sink, having side walls for its entire periphery and a bottom which is provided with draining portions inclined toward the small end ot the strainer when the strainer is in normal position and in the Opposite direction when the strainer is tilted, said bottom having an outlet between the adjacent edges of each two ot saidrdraining portions and said edges being in such relation to each other that one portion drains onto the other when the strainer is tilted, said straining portions being curved concavely with respect to the small end of the strainer, whereby in tilted position ot the strainer the ends of the outlet between any two draining portions are higher than its middle.
