Description

H. BARNES GOLF CLUB v Filedjoct. 29. 1920 INVENTOR //%n 5W 7 ATTORNEY I declare the following to be a full, clear,
'acteristics. Such an a justment of the head ada Patented Apr. 28, 1925. I I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
. Harmon BARNES, or new YORK mus, new YORK.
- GOLF CLUB.
Application filed Dctober 29, 1920. Serial No. name.
To' all whom it may concern: Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the golf club Be it known that I, Harmon BARNES, a, shown in Fig. 1; citizen of the United States, residing at New York Mills, in the j county of Oneida club, showin and State of New York, have invented cerillustrated in tain new and useful Improvements in Golf v Clubs, of which the following is a specifimodified form of the golf club, showing the cation, reference being -had therein to the junction of the head with the shaftand accompanying drawing.' looking at said parts which are slightly My invention relates to a golf club and tipped at an angle. 7
Referring more particularly to the drawconcise and exact description thereof s'ufiiings, the head -1- of the golf club has cient to enable anyone skilled in which it appertains to make and use the is pivotally joined thereto. The lower end same, reference being had to the accomof said shaft 3 is reduced at 4 to form a panying drawings in which like reference tongue that sets down into the socket 2 characters refer to like parts throughout the formed in part 5 of the head -1- and is specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a bolt 7. The bolt 7 projects through the golf club that will have an adjustable head walls of part 5 and through the lower end relative to the shaft, whereby the club can or tongue 4 of shaft 3. be made to fit the stance of any golf player Said head regardless of said pla ers height or charangle relative to the shaft 3, whereby to t the golf club, particularly the putter, to the shaft is more particularly desirable to t e stance of the player using said club with reference to the golf club known as the by a bolt 10 that also passes through the putter used for driving the golf ball for walls adjacent the socket 2 and throughthe short distances over a green into a hole, tongue 4. Fog this purpose the walls are the side opposite to t at ig. 1..
where a great degree of accuracy is required. provided with slots 11, 11 that are formed To this end the club is equipped with a head on the arc of a circle to receive and allow that is pivotally mounted to the shaft. the projecting ends of the bolt 10 to move Mechanism. is provided also to lock said therein to adjusted position. On one side parts at any desired angle that conforms to the slot 11 has a counter sunk recess 11 the proper stance of the player using the formed adjacent thereto for the dis osition golf putter. l/Vhen once this angle is 'ascerof head '10 of bolt 10, whereby said ead 10 tained, the parts will be rigidly set to prewill fit flush with the contiguous surface of vent any further movement thereof, wherehead --1--. However, when head 1- is by to maintain that certain angle which mov'edrelative to the shaft 3 and the correct most nearly conforms to the stance of the angle ascertained to conform to the stance of user of said club. the layer using the club, said head --1- and The object will be understoodby referring shaft 3 will remain fixed thereafter and not to the drawings in which: be moved exce t at the will of the player.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the golf In order to old thus the head -1 and club embodying the improvement, showmg shaft 3 relativeto each other, an annular the shaft broken away; 1 & thumb nut 12 having a serrated periphery Fig. 2 is a detail pers ctive view of an 13 and slot '13 for the disposition therein annular thumb nut emp oyed, showing the of the end of a screw driver, is screw same mounted u n a bolt also employed; mounted tov the bolt 10. Said thumb nut Fig. 3'is a si e elevation, lookin at the 12 has a central boss 14 that is adapted to rear side thereof, of a modified form of make contact and bind against the adjacent golf club; I surface of the head -1- when said nut is Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a still s rewed up tight along the bolt 10. The further modified :form of golf club, the turning of the thumb nut 12 upon the bolt shaft being removed therefrom; a 10 will draw the bolt 10 towards said Fig. 5 is a perspective detail-view of the nut=12 and thereby cause the upper parts shaftthat'fits the head shown in Fig. 4; of the walls adjacent the socket 2 in part the art toa recess or socket at 2 where the shaft 3v pivotally -united to said part 5 byaheaded Fig. 7 is an elevational view of the 01f Fig. 8 is a perspective view of another -1-- is held at any desired of head 1 to bind. rigidly against the adjacent sides of tongue 4 at the angle to which it is set with reference to shaft 3.
, er annular part 18 of shaft 19. A headed bolt and nut are employed to hold said head and shaft together. The teeth 16 and 17 are made very small to permit a very accurate adjustment of the head -1- relative to the shaft 19.
The modification of the golf club illustrated in Fig. 3, shows a club adapted for use by either a right or left hand player. Here the head 20 has a central, recess or socket for the reception of the lower reduced end 21 of the shaft 22, which is pivotally united to said head 20 by a headed bolt 23 that passes through the walls of the socket in head 20 and through the reduced end 21 of said shaft 22, much in the same manner as already described'with reference to the former construction illustrated in Figs. 1, 6 and 7.
The head 20. is held at any given angle relative to shaft .22, whereby to make the club conform to the stance of a right or left hand player by a headed bolt 24 and an nular thumb nut 25 having a serrated periphery and slot 26, for the disposition of the end of a screw driver. The bolt 24 passes through the lower reduced end 21 of shaft 22. Its free ends rest in they eloncess 27 and exten s sufficiently far for the mounting of the annular thumb nut 25, as
in the former construction.
Fig. 8 shows a still further modification. Here the head 30 has its end part equipped with a pluralit of sockets formed between walls 31 of sai part. The shaft 32 has also a plurality of tongues 33 adapted to fit down into saidsockets formed between the walls 31. A headed bolt 35 and annular thumb nut 36 similar :to those heretofore described are used to hold the shaft 32 and head 30 at any desired angle that will conform to the stance of the player. A washer 38 is mounted on the bolt 35 so as to come between the surface of the annular thumb nut 36 and that of the head 30 to provide clearance between said surfaces.
\Vhen the thumb nut 36 is tightened sufficiently it will cause the several walls 31 and tongues 33 to bind together, whereby to hold in a rigid manner the head 30 relative to the shaft 32. The bolt 35 will be employed alone in this construction without the aid of another bolt to act as a separate fulcrum. The head of bolt 35 is countersunk in outside wall 31 of head 30.
Having thus. described my invention what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In. a golf club, a shaft being pivotally mounted to said head, said head having formed thereon a plurality of walls with sockets therebetween, said shaft having a plurality of tongues formed thereon, said tongues adapted fit within said sockets, recesses made 111 said tongues and walls, a bolt adapted to fit withinsaid recesses, and a thumb nut screw mounted to said bolt, whereby to bind the tongues and walls to hold the head in given, eel-- justed position with reference to said shaft, and a washer for holding the thumb nut away from the surface of the head.
2. In :a golf club, a head, a shaft, said shaft being'pivotally mounted to said head, said headhaving formed thereon a plurality of walls with sockets therebetween, said shaft having a plurality of tongues formed thereon, said tongues adapted fit within said sockets, recesses made in said wit in said recesses, and a thum nut screw mounted to said bolt, whereby to bind the tongues and walls to hold the head is given adjusted position with reference to said shaft, and-'a washer for holdin the thumb nut away from the surface of t e head, and
said head of the bolt being countersunk in a wall of the head.-
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature. HEFFRONB A'RNES.
