Description
A r. 24, 1923. 1,452,845 -R. D. PRYDE GOLF CLUB Filed May 21. 1921 Patented Apr. 24, 1323.
UNITED SITES teases ROBERT D. PRYDE, ORANGE, CONNECTICUT.
GOLF cIiUB.
Application filed May 21, 1921. Serial No. 471,406.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ROBERT D. PRYDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orange, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Golf Clubs, of which the following is a specification,
I reference being had therein to the accom panying drawlngs.
This invention relates to improvements in golf clubs and has for its object, among other things, to increase the efficiency of the club by giving it greater driving power and ac curacy. These are accomplished by attaching a weight to the head so shaped that it extends substantially the entire width of the back of the head to properly balance the same and with an offset portion thereon of considerably less width and that projects forwardly and terminates at a point quite close to the striking face.
Among other aims and objects of the invention, may be recited the provision of a golf club of the character mentioned with a view to compactness and neatness in which the construction is simple and the cost of production .small.
The improvements in the details and arrangements of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings in connection with the description hereinafter contained and wherein a preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding thereof.
In the drawings,-
Figure 1 is a plan view of a golf club head embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional. view thereof taken generally upon line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the weight.
Having more particular referenceto the drawings and in connection with which like reference characters refer to corresponding parts, 10 designates the golf club head, 11 the striking face and 12 the shaft or handle which may be integral therewith or an independent member secured thereto in any well known manner.
The weight 13 is of less thickness than the depth of the head 10 and is constructed with a body portion 14 having an outer curved surface which corresponds with the curvature of the back of the head, and an oflset portion 15, the front end of which is curved as shown and havingsubstantially parallel sides which project laterally from the two flat inner faces 16 of the body portion.
A recess is formed in the top of the head to receive the weight which is located so that there is a fiat face 17 against which abuts the inner faces 16 of the weight and the offset portion 15 is directly in line with the striking face of the head at a point where the ball contacts therewith. This weight is permanently held in its fixed positlon by a screw 18 or such other fastening means as may be desired. I have shown in the drawings this weight as being fixed in the top of the head, but if desired it may be secured in the underside thereof.
In this structure, the weight is distributed uniformly over the entire rear of the head, and the club is thus well balanced in the hand and not liable to shift or lose its position while driving. The offset portion 15 of the weight projects in the same line as the movement of the head while driving and is directly in rear of the striking face where the ball contacts therewith and very close thereto, there being only sufficient wood therebetween to insure a wooden striking face and not weaken the head. By reason of these features great driving power is given to the club, much more than has heretofore been possible to obtain, owing to the proximity of the weight to the striking face and its uniform distribution over the rear of the golf club.
l/Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: i
1. In a golf club, a head having a wooden body portion, with a recess in its rear upper face, and a weight secured within said recess, having a central portion that approaches at the top of said head very near to the striking face thereof, and two substantially fiat faces that project laterally therefrom and terminate at the outer edge of the head, all of the weight added to said head being at the top and rear thereof.
2. In a golf club, a head having a wooden body portion with a recess in its rear upper face, and a weight secured within said recess, having a central portion with substantially parallel sides for a portion of its length, that approaches very near to the striking face of said head, and two substantially flat faces projecting laterally there from that terminate at the outer edge of the head.
3. In a golf club, a head comprising a wooden portion, and a weight secured in the top of the head, said weight having less thickness than said head and constructed with a body portion, an ofiset portion of less width than the body portion located substantially midway between the ends of the body portion, the outer face of said body portion having substantially the same curvature as that of the head, the inner face there of being substantially flat.
a. In a golf club, a head having a wooden body portion, and a weight secured thereto and supported upon its underside by a portion of said head, said weight having a body with an ofiset portion of less width than the body and located substantially midway between the ends of the body, the outer face of said body having substantially the same curvature as that of the head and the innei face upon each side of said offset portion beingsubstantially flat.
In a golf club, a wooden head, a weight secured thereto and supported upon its entire underside by a portion of said head, said weight being substantially flat upon its underside and constructed with a body, an oil'- set portion of less width than the body and located substantially midway between the ends of the body, the inner face of said body being substantially flat and projecting laterally from each side of said offset portion.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto atfixed my signature.
ROBERT D. PRYDE.
