Be it known that I, Grenen E. Manin, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have inventednew and useful Improvements in VBoiler-Fluo (lonstruction, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention relates to boiler construction and more particularly-in effecting a practically non-leakable joint for connecting boiler tubes to boiler end plates.
in object is to provide a tube and end plate joint so constructed as to withstand internal or externa-l pressure and that Will not loosen from the etl'ect or expansion and contraction in theparte caused by the heat of the boiler.
Another object is to provide the end plate from the inside face with an, inwardly taper- `ing` set of openings, iid openings extending substantially to the center of the plate section, or approximately so. The opening is then tapered from the outside face to the center, thereby making openings with tapered walls adapted to receive annular gaskets and tubes with the ends of the tubes tapered practically as the Walls of the inside openings are tapered an-d of a size admitting of the inter-positioning of said gasket; placing said gasket and tubes in the opening, thereafter flaring the tube end and besuling the same to effect a joint between the end plates and flue tubes.
A further object is to provide a tube and end plate construction with the use of one piece tubes having Weld-less tube ends especially adapted formarine boilers wherein Weld-less joints are specified.
l/Vith the foregoing objects in View, together with such other objects and advantages as may subsequently appear, my 1nvention resides in the parts and construction hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which:-

More saecitically, 1() is a section of a boiler lend` plate provided with numerous openings 11 designated by dotted lines shown in Fig. t.
Referring to Fig. 4f starting at the inside face 12 of the end plate 10 opening 11 is apered toward the outside face 13 and extends to an annular diametrical edge 14 between the inner face 12 and the outer face 13, said opening thus forniing an annular tapered Wall 15 between the inner space 12 and the outer space 153. The edge 1G of the Wall 15 on the inner face 12 is of an annular diameter larger than the annular edge 1i; the opening 11 is then tapered from the outer face 13 to the edge 1% thus forming a second annular tapered Wall 17 between the outer face 13 and the inner face 12 of which the edge 18 on the outer face 13 is enlarge-d in size over the annular edge 1libetvveen the faces 12 and 13. The annular inwardly tapering Walls 15 and 17 meeting at the edge 1d- Will throughout the remainder of the specifica-tion be designated by the numeral 19; in Figs. 2, 3 `and 4: l have shown each part constituting the tube assembly in one joint to more clearly show the details of construction.
The tube 2O is of a slightly smaller diameter than the diametral edge 1G of the opening 19, said tube 20 is reduced to a straight annular diametrical surface 21 parallel to the surface of tube 20, conforming to a size somewhat smaller than the diametral edge 14. Fromv the surface 21 to the tube section 2O a portion is tapered to form an annular conical surface 22 substantially at an angle parallel to the tapered Wall 15.
A ring gasket 23 is annular in shape, having annular Walls 21 and mating surfaces 21 and 22 of the tube 20, so it may be slipped onto the reduced portion of the tube 20, whereupon surfaces 24 and 25 of the gasket 3 Will tightly lit the annular Walls 21 and 22 of the tube 20. Gasket 23 is provided With an annular [iange 26, the purpose of which is to abut against Wall 12 so that in assembly said gasket Will not lose its position in the opening 19.
1n assembling the gasket s3, tube 2O and end plate 10 to form a tight joint for obviating leakage, gasket 23 placed on tube 2O said gasket A3 and tube 2O are slipped in the opening 19 and jammed therein till the wall 25 of the gasket 23 tits the wall 15 of the plate 10. hnlaintaining the position, the outer end Q7 of the tube 2() is flared outwardly thereby expanding annular wall Q4 of the gasket against the wall 17 of the plate 1t), the stock ot metal left is curved to form a bead 2S; further working of the bead causes an annular drawing action on the tapering section of the tube Q0 and gasket 23 to etl'ect a tight tapering joint on approximately a major portion of the opening 19 from the inside wall 12 ol the plate section 10 and a minor portion from the outside wall 13 to the plate section 10. With this construction the tapered portion ot the tube will be in opposition one to the other maintaining a tight joint.
1n the modified form ot lconstruction shown in Fig. 5 the tapered portions are shorter troni the inside tace 1Q to the edge let and the tapered portions are longer trom the outside Yface .13 to' thel edge 14.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that any expansion or contraction internal or external pressure acting on the joint will not tend to loosen said joint, whereby any leakage ot the tube is reduced to a minimum,
Various changes may be made in the shape and proportion coming within the scope ot the appended claims.
I claim :d
1. ln a boiler, end plates, gaskets and tubes, said end plates provided with a series ot' openings, each opening in said plate haring two annular tapering walls, one wall tapering from one side of the plate to near the center of the plate section and the second wall of substantially the same taper as the lirst mentioned Wall extending to near the center of the plate section from the side opposite the rst named side; each gasket ot tubular section formed to lit the iirst mentioned tapering wall and the remainder ot the gasket formed straight and extending through said openings, each tube provided with a reduced end, said end 'orined with a taper to lit the taper in the gasket and a straight portion extending through said gasket; said straight portion of the gasket and said straight ot the tube extending through said opening in the end plate being expanded and the remaining end ot said tube beaded over against the said second wall o'j said end plate so that the lirst mentioned tapered sections are in opposition to the second mentioned tapered sections, thus ltorining a tight joint.
2. In a boiler, an end plate having a tine, end receiving opening, the wall ot which tapers trom the inner and outer tacos ot the, plate toward the center thereol, and a tube having an inwardly converging end portion adapted to extend into and conform to the taper on the inner 'tace ot the end plate and having its end portion flared outwardly Atrom its ctmverging portion to conform to the taper leadingl trom the outside tace ot the plate with its extremitjY beaded into engiiagcment with the outer ''ace ol said end plate.
