In -the embodiment of my invention as illustrated a base 10 has 1otatably mounted thereon a post 11 as by a. trunnion 12 jour: nald in a mie 13 qf the base. The post has a fiange 14 thereon adapted to rest on the 66 base 10, and is received in circuler rabbet 15 form'ed in a retaining ring 16 secured to thebse by screws 17. The ring 16 has an inWardly projecting linge 18 thereOn received in a. circlar rabbt 19 on the flange '14 on the post. A clamp screw 25 lit threaded connection 26 With theinwardly projccting flange 18, and is adapted toexert pressure aga.inst the fiange 14 on the post and serves to clamp tl xe same in adjusted 15 position.
The base further has a depending apron 27 thereon which serves as 9. guide for 10- cating the main base withreference to an edge of the material upon which the device The post has a slot 30 theren in which a guidingblade 31 is clmped us by a clamp screw 32 passing through a hole 33in portion 34 of the post, and having threaded connection 35 with portion 36 of thepost. 'The blade preferably comprises an arm 37 hziving a depending plate 38 thereon. The ann 37 has a slot 39 theiein extendin in the direction of its greatest lengt through which the clamp screw 32 passes when -the'guidingblade has its arm cIamped in the post. In order that it will be possible to scribe a line in a given plane over any ir1e ular surface I provide a scribing device 45 a apted to be guided by the guiding blade 31. The scribing device comprises a pair of pivotally connected arms 46 pivoted as by a. pivot 47. An arc piece 48 secured to one of the arms as by a pin 49, is slidable in a slot 50 in the other of the arms and clamped in adjusted position by a thumb screw 51. Crie of the arms has a bent portion 52 thereon, to which 9. guide piece 53 is secured as b rivets 54. The other of the arms has a bloc 55 thereon, having a hole 56 therein in which a marking point 57 is adjustably secured as by a clamp screw 58,
Means are provided whereby the plane of the guiding blade may be centered with relation to c1rcular projections or corners on the surface upon.which it is desired tolay ofi' lines. Thus an auxiliary base 60 has'a miter 61 therein, formed by Wings 62 and 63. A clearance slot' 64 at the base of the miter provides clearance for sharp corners on the work. The auxiliary base is of substantially the same thickness as the height of the depending apron 27. The auxiliary base is adapted to be secured below the main base and having its side edges coinciding with the side edges of the base 10. The auxiliary base bas pins 65 thereon which are frictionally received in holes 66 in the base 10. The ins 65 and the holes 66 are 's0 10- cated witli reference tothe post 11 that a medial line passing through the corner of the miter will pass through the axial center of the post and, also cause the miter 61 t0 project clear of the base 10.
The base 10and the depending apron 27 thereon have openings'67 therein so .that a line may be scribed to the corner of the work, it being sometimes necessary to meet another line previously scribed on adjacent surfaces; In use we will assume that it is desired to scribe an angular line on the irregular surface 68 of et section of moulding 69, ashown in Fig. 1. The. guiding blade 31 is adjusted to an au le correspondmg to the angle of eut it is deswed to make, by rotating the post 11 and, the fiange 14 on the base 10 and clam ing the same in adjusted position by the'c mp screw 25. The base 10 is located in position by contacting the edge of the work with the depending apron 27. The guiding blade 31 is clamped in adjusted position in the 'slot 30 by the clamp screw 32 in such manner asto cause the depending plate 38 to extend downwardly and over the irregular surface of the moulding', as shown in Fig. .1. The flange'14 may have a mark 90 thereon adapted to coact with marks 91 on the retaining ring 16. The marks 91 may be spaced radially at regular intervals to form an index of angles in degrees of a circle. Figure designations 92 may be placed at the marks 91 to indicate the number of degrees the said marks are spaced from a given point for instance a zero point such as indicated at 93. The marks 91 therefore serve to indicate the angle in degrees at which the guiding blade may be set with respect to a predetermined plane. The marking device 45 may now be employed to scribe a lme by placing the face of the uide piece 53 into entirecontact with the gui ing blade.
