A further object of my inventio-n isltlie provision of means for detachably connecting the upper and lower lifts of such a character that the wearer himself can interchange the lower lifts to correct uneven y,wear and thereby effect economy in the use of the heels.

My invention also contemplates the provision of a connecting device the employment of which will give added resiliency to the complete heel.

I carry out the above objects by providing two interlocking members, one of which 1s adapted to be rigidly attached to an upper lift and the other of which is adapted to be rigidly secured to the lower lift. The member attached to the lower lift is adapted to fit snugly within the member attached to the upper lift to prevent relative movement between the lifts during use. A single securing member extends between the lifts and serves toi lock the co-operating members together. This securing member is arranged to be inserted from the forward face of the lift and is therefore ordinarily concealed from view.

The means for carrying out my invention will be hereinafter more fully set forth in the following description, which pertains to they accompanying drawings. kThe essential features of my invention will be summarized in the claims. y

whereby the over-all depth necessary 'to effect the interlocking may be reduced to a minimum. A tongue 15, having a threaded opening 16 therein, is shown on an arm 17,

which is disposed intermediate the member 12 and the upper lift, and is shown aspositioned therein by securing members 18.y

The plate 12 may be provided with a passageway 19 and a recess 20 to receive a locklift, I have shown attaching screws 28,

which extend through openings in the strips 26 and also through the plate 25, and are adaptedv to be anchored in facing `pieces 27, which as shown in Fig. 5, are disposed on the upper side of the plate. The plate 25 is shown as having a slot 30 adjacent the .rearward end of the passageway 29, which slot is arranged to receive the tongue 15, when the lower member is brought to the proper position for interlocking with the upper member.

To lock the'upper and lower co-operating members, I may provide a screw 31 which extends through the passageway 19 on the upper lift, and vthen through the passageway 29 on the lower lift, and is threaded to engage the threaded opening 16 in the tongue. -The relative position of the cov I my invention is the reduction of the overall depth of the heel which is occasioned by the nesting of the interlocking members.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

l. A device for connecting the lifts of a heel, comprising in combination, a member rigidly attached to the upper lift and comprising a hollo-wed-ont plate and an arm carried by said plate and extending rearwardly and centrally of the hollowed out portion of said plate, a second member having the periphery thereof shapedto enter the opening within the first mentioned plate, and having a transversely extending slot adapted to receive a portion of said arm, the second named member, having a longitudinally extending passageway terminating adjacentsaid slot, and the firstnamed member having a passageway leading from the forward face thereof in registration with the passageway in the second named member, and means extending through said passageways and engaging said arm for locking said members together.

2. A device for connecting the lifts of a heel comprising in combination, a plate having an outline conforming to the shape of a heel, and having an opening corresponding to the outline defined by the heel, an L-shaped member having a threaded opening in one arm thereof, and having the other arm rigidly connected to said member, a second member carried by the lower lift and having a passageway extending longitudinally and leading from the forward face, said second named member also having a slot extending transversely thereof and terminating adjacent the rearward end of the passageway therein, the arm having the threaded opening being adapted to extend through said slot, and a screw extending through said passageways and being in threaded engagement with said opening for locking said members together.
