In the usual mon -paying machine the mechanism of the iadding device is selectiy cly connected to a series of-ejector rods :3. which in this case constitute the main opcr ating members for the counting device and which are suitably mounted on a supporting base 4:. In" the usual money-paying machine cach of'these rods is adapted to correspond to a tube which isadapted to hold a number of coins of a single denomination and from whioh separate tubes the respec-v t-ive rods are adapted to eject the coins for the purpose of completing the sum ofmoney totaled in the adding machine for-each payment.
As seen in Figure 2", the handle shaft 50 of the adding machine has a spring actuated double armed lever 51 fixed thereon a stud 52 on one arm of said lever engaging the bifurcated end of a rock arm suitably journaled in the frame or casing of the adding machine. The ZIEiiS of the arm 52 carries a second arm projecting upwards and having a stud 55 adapted to be engaged by a hook 56. The hook 5G is pivotally mounted on an arm 57 rigidly attached to the ejector shaft 58 from which project downwardly the various ejector arms 59 seen in Figure 1. Thus it is that each time the shaft 50 is operated owing to the movement of the handle 2 a rocking movement is im parted to the arms 58 and 5% and such n1ovcment is communicated to the ejector shalt arm 57 thereby partially rotating the ejector shaft 58 with its arms 59. As seen in Fig ure 2 ,'bails 60 are disposed adjacent the ejectors or rods 3 and these bails are susceptible of actuation by selector (31 disposed above the same. Movement of the selectors imparting pivotal movement to predetermined'bails 60 and each bail having one of its sides engaging a rod 3 to thereby throw the rod laterally at its rear end and cause engagement of a projection on said rear end, with the lower end of an ejector arm lhis general cooperaion of parts is not material to the invention for the reason that we contemplate using any suitable mechanism for effecting the proper selection of the various rods 3 preliminary to movement ofithe rods by the handle 2 and shaft 50. Each of the rods 3, of course, as will be understood more fully hereinafter, is an actuating member adapted to cooperate with a register disposed at its front end, to operate the register each time the rod is reciprocated in an operation of the adding machine .by the handle 2. i
In our invention a register comprising a series of registering wheels is employed for each operating rod 3 for the purpose of counting the total number of coins required for the holder corresponding to said rod. These sets of wheels are enclosed within and mounted on a detachable casing comprising a back plate 5, side plates 6 and 7 and top plate 8, this latter plate being provided with sight openings through which the numbers on the registering wheels of each series are adapted to be read. The rear plate of the casing is provided at its lower part at each corner with lugs 9 which are adapted to be hung on studs 10 projecting from the main base i of the machine and at its upper corners the back plate is also provided with hooks 11 each adapted to engage a latch 12 which may be also connected with the base l: of the machine. By this arrangen'ient the casing is made attachable toand detachable from the body of the paying machine proper and is designed, to take the place ol the usual coin tray or similar holding device employed in such machines and when in place the series of registering wheels in the attachment are adapted to be positioned opposite the respective operating rods :3. it is obvious that any suitable it'oikm ol' registering mechanism may be employed in connection with each operating rod. We have shown and described aparticular form of mechanism for this purpose which is espe cially suitable for use to accomplish the purposes of this invention.
Referring to the construction of one of the sets of registering mechanisms, 13 is a rotatable shat't mounted in the side plates .(3 and 7 of the casing and provided with a handle 14, at the left hand end thereof, which handle serves to enable the registering wheels to be re-set to zero after the coui'iting operation has been completed. l lxtending lorwardly from the back platen?) of the casing is a horizontal supporting plate 15, carrying a stud 16 on which is mounted a slide bar 17, provided with slots 18 to engage the studs. This slide bar is provided with a. depending lug 1 5) with which is adapted to engage the main operating member 3 whereby the slide bar is pushedoutwardly toward the front of the machine when the rod operated. A return spring 20 serves to return the slide bar to its inward position. Extending upwardly from the slide bar is an arm 21 which is provided with a pin engaging a slot in a disk 23 which is mounted loosely on the shaft 13. This disk constitutes the main rotatable operating member for the registering wheels and it is provided on its inner "face with pawls 2 1- pivoted on studs 25 projecting from the inner surface of themember 23. lhese pawls are adapted to engage the teeth of 1 ratchet wheel 26, loosely sin-rounding the shaft 13 and fixed to the outer face of a units number wheel 27. When the. rod is reciprocated these pawls are adapted to turn the ratchet wheel and the number wheel attached thereto in a stop by step movement. Springs 28 hearing against studs 25) serve to hold the pawls in engagement with the ratchet teeth. The numben wheel 27 is retained in indexed position by delent spring 30 which engages a recess, there being a number of such recesses formed at intervals on the periphery of the said number wheel.
On the inner face of the number wheel 27 is a' stud 31 on which is mounted a pawl bf! which isadapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel 83 which corresponds with the ratchet wheel 26 ot' the units wheel. The ratchet wheel 33 is fixed to the outer face of a tens number wheel 34. Between this ratchet wheel 33 and the inner face of the units wheel is a cam 35. This cam is fixed to the shaft 13 by means of a key 36 and a portion of the pawl'i .32 is adapted to ride upon the surface-of this cam. hen the pawl reaches thecut away portion 37 of the cam the former will be permitted to fall into engagement. with the teeth of the ratchet wheel, 33, but when riding upon the high part of the cam, the pawl will be carried out of engagement with the said teeth. This pawl is adapted to bear upon the low part of the cam so as to engage the ratchet and turn the same the space of one tooth at the time when the units wheel has completed nine-tenths of a revolution and the ten is to be carried over to the tens wheel. The high 'part of the cam serves to hold the pawl out fof engagement with these teeth until this point is reached. The shaft 13is providediwith a detaining lug 41 having a groove which engaged by the end of a sliding latch 42, provided with-a spring 43. This latch serves to yieldingly retain the shaft in its normal position. "A stop pin 44, mounted on the left hand plate 7, serves to engage the lug 41 on the shaft and is so located as to limit he movement .the'reot to nine-tenths of a complete revolution. The mechanism of each set is provided with a hundreds number wheel 45 and a thousands wheel 4:6, each of whiclris adapted to be operated by carrying mechanism of the same construction as that described with respect to the tens wneel.
In the operation of the device the coin holding means are removed from the bases and the casing containing the attachment embodying our invention substituted therefor. As the keys of the adding mechanism are strucr and the handle of the machine turned the operating rods corresponding to the respective denominations of coins will be reciprocated and the number of the coins of each denomination called forfby the sums calculated on the adding machine will be registered by the respective sets 'of registering means, thus serving'to count the number of coins 'required for each holder.
As the rod 3 of anyset is pushed in, it will strike thelug 19 of the bar 17, sliding the latter which turns the rotatable operating disk 23, carrying the pawls 24: which pawls by their engagement with the ratchet wheel'26, serve to turn the units number :wheel 27. As the numeral 9 on this wheel reaches the sight opening, the pawl 32 carried by said units wheel will ride on the low part of the fixed cam35, and thus drop into engagement with the ratchet teeth 33 of the tens wheel. As the two number wheels move together to their next position, the tooth ot the pawl3 2 will be carried over the hook-ittot theeaair-rn-position-to enable the pawls and number. wheels tobe re-set, by the turning of the shaft 13, and at the same time the pawl will bear on the high part of the cam and thus be lifted out of engage ment with the ratchet wheel.
Each set of registering'wheelsis operated inthe same manner. \Vhen the count has been completed all the wheelsof the various sets are turned back to zero by means of the handle H and shaft 13.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:

In a calculating machine, the combination of a support, a shaft mounted thereon, registers carried by said shaft and each composed of units and tens registering wheels, operating means for the units wheel of each register, a lug projecting from the shaft, a stop mounted on the support, means for turning the shaft for Zeroizing purposes, limiting the shaft to nine-tenths ot' a revo lution by reason of the cooperation of the said lug with said stop, and detent means for'holding the shattin a predetermined pos tion and cooperative with said lug, said 'detent means consisting of a spring actuated latch.
3. In a calculating device of the class described, the combination of a support, a shaftmounted thereon, a plurality of registers carried by said shaft and including an operating disk and registering wheels associated therewith, actuating mechanism for each register including a bracket on said support, a slide bar carried by said bracket, a spring connecting said bar with the support to 'hold the coacting register disk in a normal position, apin and slot connection intermediate said slide ha? and the associated disk of a cooperating register. an operating member adjacentto the slide bar, said slide bar being formed with an otlstanding projection ehgageable by said operating member upon movement of the latter.
