The improvement is particularly adapted for use with the justification space indicating mechanism shown in Patent No. 1,288,- 623, which patent shows certain improvements upon such mechanism, shown in Patent No. til-405. i IirPatent No. 1,283,623, a lever is automatically swung upon its pivot, and operates a valve, and this valve will then discontinue the operation of the justification indieating mechanism. This lever is swung upon its pivot when the upwardly moving bar, which carries the pointer cooperating with the justiiication chart, has reached a predetermined position. The bar reaches this position after a predetermined number oft justiiication spaces are placed in a line, and should the operator again touch the justilieation spa-cc lrey, the further move I want of the bar will swing the lever and shift the valve, as above stated.

By this means, there will he no tendency for the operator to forget to return thero'd, with the results which flow from such neglect. When the complete line has been set, and the several parts of the machine reset, as by the pressing of the resetting key, the pawl or pawls which engage the teeth or the j ustification rack are thrown out of engagement with such rack, to perini tot the same hein-g reset, and these pawls are employed to operate the element engaging with or beneath the lever to operate the valve, whereby such element releases the lever which will return to its normal position, allowing the valve to be restored to its normal condition, and hence the justification space indicating mechanism will be properly restored. The same reference characters employed in Figures 3 and 1 of Patent No. 1,283,623, will be used, in describing the parts which are old and shown in this patent. 85 is the space counting bar, operating in a guide 85'. 86 and 87 are the lifting and holding pawls, acting on the teeth a of the bar 85 and controlled by the motor 90. 198 is a valve, controlling through the shift valve, the transference of the signal from the punches for the justifying space to those of the nonjustifying space. 201 is the valve operating lever aetin upon the valve 198.
Upon the inner end of the lever 201 is pivoted at 11 a three arm lever, one arm 13 of which forms a linger piece or the like, while the arm is adapted to rest on the lever 201 and the arm 16 projects into position to cooperate with the shoulder 1? on the space bar 85 and to be acted on by the upper end ot the manually controlled bar 10. The three arm lever forms a releasable extension of the lever 201, forming a proper connection between the lever 201 and the bar 85, and allowing of the ready removal of the bar 85, as clearly set forth in Patent No. 1,283,623.
The vertically movable bar 10 is adapted when elevated to engage the arm 16 and through it move the lever 201 and the valve 198. This bar 10 is manually controlled through the medium of a knob or finger piece or rod 11 mounted to slide in bearings in the frame and provided with a cam or inclined face 12 for cooperation with the lower end of the bar 10.

Attention is also called to Patent No. 944,405, above referred to, particularly to Figure 19 thereof. This trip 92 is clearly shown in Figure 19 and is arranged to engage with pins 9 1-, carried by the pawls 86 and 87. As is clearly set forth in Patent No. 94 1,4105, when a line has been completed, the various parts of the machine are reset, bythe strile ing of a resetting key, and this action causes the trip 92 to move toward the pawls S6 and ST, whereb 1 these pawls disengage the teeth a. and are swung outwardly away from these teeth, so that the bar 85 may descend or be reset. This outward movement of the pawls is ordinarily called kicking-off of the pawls.
My deviceor attachment embodies an inverted L-shaped support or plate B, which the guide 85 by screws C. The plate 13 has pivotal connection at D with a holding element E. This holding element projects upwardly beyond the pivot in the form of an extension F, having connection with a spring G secured to an extension H of the plate B. The lower end of the holding element E is provided with a laterally extending linger I, which is adapted to rest in engagement with the side of the arm 16. The element E is also provided with an extension or tail J, disposed generally at a right angle to the linger I. The extension J is located across the pawls 86 and 87, and is so arranged that when these pawls are thrown outwardly to release the rack 85, such pawls will engage the extension J, and swing the holding member E outwardly upon its pivot.
In the operation of the machine, the rack 85 is moved upwardly, as explained in Patents Nos. 1,283,623 and 944,405, whereby the justification space indicating mechanism is operated. This action is caused by the operation of the justification space keys, the air passing to the motor 90 each time a justi'fication space hey is actuated by the operator, and also to the motors of the justification space punches. The motor 90 acting on the arm 91 raises the lifting pawl 86, which, ongaging the teeth of the justilication space mounting bar 85, raises the latter through one division. Should the operator after the predetermined number of justification spaces that are to be placed in a line is reached, again touch the justiiication space key, the bar 85 in rising will lift the arm 15 through the engagement of the shoulder 17 and this will cause the lever 201 to turn on its pivot cl and operate the valve 198. The valve 198 will operate to allow air to pass to shift the valve 20 soas to close the communication of the space signal keys with the space signal punch motors, and transfer the conin'lunication to the punches of an ordi nary space. The motor 90 receives its inotive fluid through one of the justilicatiou punch motors, so that when the power is shut off from this motor by the operation of the valve 20, no further nrovement of the bar 85 would take place.
Vith the bar 85 thus elevated, and the outer end of the lever 201 elevated, the holding element E is automatically shifted toward the lever 201, and its linger 1 will slide under the lever 201; The spring (1* will hold the element E in this position. until the parts are reset, by the pressing of a resetting key, at which time pawls 86 and 87 are swung outwardly and engage the extension J and shift the element E outwardly so that the extension I is withdrawn from beneath the lever 201", which is now reset.

Instead of allowing the rod 11 to remain in the forward or withdrawn position until the line is completed, the operator at once returns the rod 11 to the inner or rear position as soon as it has been shifted to j the outer position, thuseliminating the liability of the operator forgetting that the rod 11 is in the outer position, and allowing it to remain in this position, during the setting of the next line. As soon as the rod 11 is thus shifted to the outer position, the bar 10 arises, and by engaging the arm 16, swings the lever 201"" upon its pivot, as explained. The instant that this leveris swung upon its pivot, the linger I slips under the lever and hence holds or locks it against a return movement. Therefore, when the rod ll is pushed to the inner or rear position, immediately, described, the lever 201. is held in the shifted position, just as if the rod 11 remained in the open or forward position. The lever 201 is held in this shifted position until the end of the line is reached, at which time a resetting key is struck, and the parts of the machine are reset, including the movement of the trip 92 for throwing the pawls 86 and 87 outwardly. When these pawls move outwardly, to reset. the bar 85, then engage the extension J and the element E disengages or releases the lever 201, which is free to return to its normal position.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of pz'irts maybe rcsorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the sub joined claims.
Having thus describedniy invention, what I claim is:
1. In line justification indicating mechanism of the character described, the combination with a vertically movable space counting bar, of a valve actuating lever arranged in cooperative relation to the bar and having a part shifted by the bar when the bar moves to aselected position, a holding device arranged near the lever and adapted to automatically move into locking engagement therewith when the lever is shifted from the normal position, and means to advance said bar, said means also serving to operate the holding device for releasing the lever, when shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the.

In line justification indicating mechanism of the character described, the combination with a vertically movable space counting bar, of a valve actuating lever arranged in cooperative relation to the bar, a connector carried by the lever and arranged to be engaged and moved by a part of said bar, a pivoted holding element having a finger normally resting upon one side of said connector and adapted to move beneath said connector when the connector is shifted upwardly, a spring to move the pivoted holding element in one direction, an extension carried by the holding element, pawl means to advance said bar and also serving to engage andshiftsaid extension, a trip to move thepawl means away from said bar, and manually operated means to engage with said connector and shift it upwardly from the normal position. 7
