screws 25. Hence the upper ends of the lifting screws are swivelly connected to the lifting beams. The lower ends of said lifting screws are swivclly connected to a parallel platform 21 which is arranged thus for vertical movement and is suspended by the lifting screws in the pit.
A horizontally arranged shaft 50 is mounted in bearings 51 on the platform 21 and is provided at its ends with bevel gears 52, which are splined thereto and shiftable thereon. The diametrically oppositely arranged lifting screws 17, 19 are respectively provided with bevel gears 54:, 55 for engagement respectively by the gears 52, 53. Said lifting screws 17, 18, 19, 20 are also respectively provided with sprocket wheels 56, 57, 58, 59 which are engaged and connected together by an endless chain 60. A tensioning sprocket wheel 61 for the chain is engaged therewith and is mounted for rotation on an arm 62 which is pivotally mounted at 62 on the platform and has at its free end a slot 62 through which passes a wheel screw 63. By means of the wheel 61 and its connections above described the chain may be put under the required tension to cause all of the lifting screws to be simultaneously rotated, when one of them is rotated, as will be understood.
Shifting arms 68, 69 are respectively provided for the gears 52, 53. Said arms are connected together for simultaneous movement by a rod 70 and have their forks engaged respectively with circumferential grooves 67, 67 with which inwardly extending sleeve portions of said gears are provided as indicated in Figure 7. The pivotof the shifting arm 68 is indicated at 68", That of the arm 69 is formed by a squared vertical shaft 71 which passes through a corresponding opening in said arm. Said shaft is mounted for rotation and passes below he platform 21 and has at its lower end a tappet arm 73 and is provided at a suitable distance above said platform with a tappet arm 72. Said shaft extends upwardly and has its upper end mounted in a bearing in a plate 23 which is mounted for rotation on the inwardly extending flange of an annular plate 26 which is arranged together with the plate 28 at the floor level in the mouth of the pit, said annular plate being supported by brackets 27 which are bolted thereto and to the plate 8. Said plate 28 has a circular central opening, forming a manhole, and in which is seated a removable plate 29. The plate 28 has hangers 30 de pending therefrom provided with unthreaded openings through which the lifting screws extend.
A. shaft 4-2 which is parallel with the shaft 50 is mounted in bearings 43 on the platform 21 and is provided with a pulley i t which is connected by a belt: 45 with a pnl ley 46 on the shaft of a motor ll. Said motor is here shown as an electric motor but may be of any suitable type. Shaft 4L2 is also provided with a gear wheel which engages a gear wheel at!) on the shaft 50 so that the latter shaft may be driven from the shaft l2. Said shaft 42 also has a splined shiftable bevel gear 41 which may be engaged with and disengaged from a bevel gear 40 on a vertical shaft 37. Said shaft 37 is mounted in suitable bearings in the platform and in the arm 136 of the annular plate 10 and is provided with a pinion 38 which engages the internal gear 39. The
gear 11 may be shifted into or out of engagement; with the gear a l) by a shifting arm 64 the fork of which is engaged with an annular groove in a sleeve extension of said gear 11 and the said shifting arm is mounted on a vertical shaft which has bearings in the platform 21 and the plate 28. A hand wheel 66 is provided which may be engaged with either the upper end of the shaft (35 or the shaft 71 as may be required.
The cover plate 28 has depending arms 1?! 75 which are secured by pins 76 to the arms 13, 14, 15, 16 of the plate or turntable ele ment 10, thereby securing said cover plate in place and for rotation with said element 10.
The platform 21 has a vertical reversing element 74 the upper and lower ends of which are inclined to form cam surfaces T l arranged to respectively engage the reversing arms 72, 7 3 of the shaft 71 at the limits of the vertical movement of the platform and its connections. The ends of the lifting pins 22, 23 are provided respectively with forlrs 22, 23 to receive the inner ends of extension beams 3.2, 33, said extension beams being connected to said lifting beams by pivoting bolts 32 and also by removable bolts 32. Said extension beams also have inclined adjustable openings 32 and 32, and near their outer ends vertical openings 34. The outer ends of the extension pins 32 are connected together by detachable cross bars 34 which are provided at their ends with depending pins 34 to enter the openings 34 and at their centers with open ings 34; forming eyes to facilitate the addition of weights of any kind other than ve hicles which it may be desired to raise or lower by my improvde apparatus. Said oxtension beams 32 are also connected together in pairs by adjustable cross bars which have grooves 35 on their undersides at their ends to receive said beams.

The operation of my improved apparatus is as follows:
A ssijunine that automobiles have been placed on the extensions 32 ant 38 after having previously fitted the blocks 36 to said eX- tensions and that the motor 4Thas been started, the pulley 46 transmits movement to the pulley 44 and the gear 48-49 communicates movement to the axle 50. Assuming that thepinion 52 is in gear with the corresponding wheel 54 fixed to the screw 17 said screw will be rotated andthe move ment will. be transmitted to each of the other screws 18, and 20 by means of the chain and sprocket wheels 56, 57, 58, 59, thus causingsaid screws to move upwardly through the arms 13, 14, 15 and 16 and to move the platform 21 therewith, consequently lifting the beams and 23 together with the extensions 32 an-t 33 on which the cars B and (l are mounted, as indicated in dotted lines in Figure 4 and in full lines in Figure 3. lVhe-n the desired height is reached such. as will enable persons to pass readily under the raised automobiles, the posts 77 illustrated in Figure 13 are emploved. Each post consists of a bar forked at ilidhillllftill'ls upper end as indicated at 77 to enable it to be secured by a pin passed therethrough and through one of the openings near the outer end of the extension beam. iilaid bar has joined to its lower end a forked foot 78 which bears on the floor.

However, if it is desired only to tilt the automobiles, the posts 77 are not removed. The bolts 32 are removed, however, so that the bolts 32 form pivots on which the extension bea s a e e to turn. If it is desired to give a rotary movement tothe supports which carry the automobiles, the gears 52, 5?) are disengaged from the .Q'enrs 54, :35, and the pinion 41-is caused to gear withlthe ear 40 fastenedztoithe axle 42 :byoperatingithe clutch. This causes the shaft 3T,COI'tliQ-IT with the pinion 2-0 to revolvc, and said pinion being engaged with the internal gear the turntable ring .10, tonether with :all the ilifting mechanism will be irevolved, as will be understood.
I n case the upward movement of ithe four screws or posts 1?, 16. 19 and :20 becauseiof carelessness or any other reason should not stop at the convenient limit, the stop 7 2 will come in contact with the cam which forms the top surface of the plate 74 and will communicate a sufficient turning movement to the rod 71 to automatically operate the shift ing arms (38. 6%) and will hence connect the gear 53 with the wheel 55 and disconnect the pinion 52 from the wheel 54, thereby stopping the apparatus. ()ndescending beyond the convenient limit the stop 73 will slide over the cam of the top border of the plate 7 4 and will effect a reverse operation of the gears, thereby stopping the descent of the apparatus.
The arms 75 held by the stops 76 prevent all lateral movement which would disarrang'e the structure while in operation. 7
The apparatus is also adapted to lift two more automobiles by the employment of the supplemental beams 79 and supplemental extension beams 81, hereinbefore described. and as shown in Figure 2.
In Figure 15 is shown in detail a modified form of. the invention for use when it is desired to employ the apparatus simply to raise vehicles but not to conununicate rotary movement thereto. In this form of the invention the plates 7. 8 and 10 are omitted and the top frame of tlie apparatus is reduced to only a circular plate 83 em bedded in the wall of the pit, over which plate the lifting); screws 86 pass. ()u the exterior side of plate 84 an. angular groove 85 on which supports 87 are fastened, said supports having; bolted thereto a plate 88 similar to plate 26, the latter being adapted to support a plate 89 similar to plate 28.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. Lifting apparatus scribed comprising a turntable element and means to mount and support the same, said mounting means including an internal gear, lifting screws threadedly engaged with said, turntable element, a platform connected to of the class desaid screws to be raised or lowered thereby, a shaft mounted on said platform and hav ing a pinion engaged with said internal gear, and a motor mounted on said platform and geared to said shaft.
2. Lifting apparatus comprising a turntable element, mounting and supporting means therefor including an internal gear, lifting screws threadedly engaged with said turntable element, a platform connected to and carried by said screws, means connecting said screws to cause them to be simultaneously rotated, driving means for said screws, a shaft mounted on the platform and having a pinion engaging said gears, driving means for said shaft geared to said lifting crew driving means, a motor common to said lifting screw driving means and said pinion driving means, and means to engage and disengage said lifting screw driving means and said pinion driving means at will.

In lifting apparatus of the class described, a supporting element, lifting screws engaged therewith, beams mounted on said lifting screws, extension beams pivotally connected to said beams, and means to support the outer ends of said extension beams to enable them to be inclined when the screws and the beams are lowered.
4-. In lifting apparatus of the class described, a supporting element, lifting screws engaged there-with, beams mounted on said screws, extension beams connected to the ends of said beams and mounting blocks adjustably seated on said extension beams.
