EDWARD A. BUTTS, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICAL COMPOUNDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,421, dated July 28, 1874 application filed July 20,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. BUTTS, of Washington, in the county of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented a certain new and useful Medical Compound; and I do hereby declare the following to be a 'fllll, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the .accompanyin g drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of medicaments commonly called and known as laxatives or pnrgatives; and consists ofa split fig inclos- (dandeliom) and an extract of tomato. The different ingredients, as specified, composing my said compound may be mixed in suitable or less active catharsis. By enveloping or inclosing this compound in a fig, (which, to the best of my knowledge and belief, is entirely novel,) I provide a laxative medicine easy and agreeable of administration, alike to children and to adults averse to taking ordinary prescriptions of this kind.
The figs enveloping the compound, as herein described, may be put up in proper packages, and may be labeled according to their strength or force of operation, so that the packages may designate that which will be proper to use for the young, middle-aged, or adults.
In the drawing is represented such a package designed and labeled for the use of children, showing also the method which I prefer of for min g a package.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A medical bolus or package composed of a fig enveloping a cathartic medicine, substantially as shown.
2. The medical compound herein described,
composed essentially of senna, extract of tomato. and Tara/mama dens-looms, enveloped or inclosed within a fig, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. I 3. The package herein described,-inclosing the medicated figs, and labeled in such a manner as to designate the adaptation of its inclosed medicine to children or adults, substantially as shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of July, 1874.
EDWARD A. BUTTS.
