Be it known that I, lVILLni-M DUGUAY, a citizen of Canada, residing at Lowell, in the countv of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to locks, having more particular reference to' a combination operated padlock having` a series olf rotary elements which are set in proper relative arrangement to release the shackle.

parts as shown in the drawing, is formed with an upwardly projectingr hub element 26 which extends through a complementary opening in the top plate 10 and is formed with an enlarged head Q7 for purposes of rotation. The middle disk 22. has an integral trunnion projection 28 whichextends freely upward through the hub element 26 and is likewise formed with a head 29 for rotation purposes. The lower disk'23 is -formed with a trunnion projection 30 which extends downward' through a complementary opening in the bottom plate 1l, and has also a head 3l on its lowerend for purposes of rotation.
Each ot' the ringsl is vformed on its inner wall with a notch 33 of suliicient depth radially to allow of the shackle leg l5 moving laterally a slight distance, to 'tree a-lug 3l on the end oit' the leg 15 trom a shoulder on an undercut recess 35 on the plate l0.
The openings in the plate l0 through which thc legs oi the shackle extend are elongated sutiiciently to allow ol the lateral movementot the shackle, the exterior portion of the shackle being formed as shown to cover these openings when the lock is closed.
Suitable numbers are placed around the perimeters of the plates l0, ll and rings 12, while other numbers are placed on the exposed faces of the plates lt), ll adjacent the heads 2T, 29 and 3l. These numbers are for setting purposes, as will be understood, al though the numbers on the perimeters of the plates are n'ierely dummy numbers to contuse anyone attempting to pick the lock. The rings l2 are ot sul'licient interior diameter to permit ot their iree rotation with the shackle in place and are held against lateral displacement by interlocking circumferential liange and recess formations 36 engaging them with one another and with the plates 10, ll.
To release the shackle the heads 2T, 29 and 31 are turned to set the notches 24 in the disks 21, 22 and in registry with the shackle leg l5, and the rings l2 are also turned to set the notches 33 therein in registry with. this shackle leg. The shackle is then moved laterally to tree the lug 34 on the leg l5 from the recess 55. the parts being so proportioned that this movement is not suli'icient to 'tree the projections 2O on shackle leg l5 from the said disks in case The shackle is then pulled outwarilljY as usual.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent o'l' the United States is as follows:
l. ln a padlock, a shackle, a body comprising a pair of end plates, rotary rings located between said end plates, and disks enclosed within the body adapted to engage and lock the shackle, said disks being formed with elements projecting thro-ugh the said end plates for purposes oi' rotation, a part on said shackle adapted to be released from the body by lateral movement of the shackle, said rings normally holding the shackle` against lateral movement, and being each formed with a notch adapted to be brought into registry with the shackle to free the latter said notches being of a depth insu'liicient to permit of disengagement of the shackle from the said disks by the said lateral movement of the-shackle,
2. In a padlock, a body comprising end plates, rotary rings located between said end plates, a shackle having a short leg and a long leg, rotary locking disks enclosed within. the said body and having parts projecting from the ends thereof for turning purposes, a series of projections on the long leg of the shackle adapted to engage over the edges of the said disks to hold the shackle against longitudinal movement, a projection on the short leg of the shackle adapted to engage in `an undercut recess in one of the end plates, said rotary rings being adapt ed to prevent `lateral movement of the shackle to free the projection on its short leg from the said recess, and being each formed with a notch adapted to be brought into registry with the long leg of the shackle to permit of the said lateral movement said notches being of a depth less than the distance which said projections on the shackle engage over the said disks to prevent disengagement oi the said projections from the said disks by the said lateral movement of the shackle.
