anner: cons'rnuorron.
Application filed November 1 3, 1924. Serial No. 749,619.
To all who 1n it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVnmucN S. Bnnnows, a citizen of the United States, resident of East Orange, county of Essex, and-State'of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in rench Construc' tions, of which the following is specification.
r his invention relates to an improvement in socket wrenches and other tools and more especially to an improvement in means securing the sockets or such a wrench on the han lle thereof.
In the securing of a socket or other tool on the handle of a wrench of the types illustrated in the accompanying drawings it is necessary that the socket be retained against both longitudinal and rotational movement on the handle, and in the past it has been customary to screw, rivet or pin the handle and socket together, providing in each instance a means to hold-the socket against both longitudinal and rotational movement, in someinsta nces providing one means to hold against rotational movement and another means to hold against longitudinal movement.
lnnmy copending application Serial No. 7
348,691 filed December 31, 1919, I have shown and claimed a means for securing the socket on the handle of a wrench which comprises inserting the handle in a hole in the base of the socket and securing the two together by driving a portion of the socket member from within the nut engaging socket into engagement with the handle to hold the socket against both longitudinal and rotational movement on the handle, this being the preferred embodiment of my invention at the date of filing of said application because the displaced portion of the socket is partially concealed from view when located in the nut engaging socket.
As explained in said original application, however, the displaced portion of the socket need not be located within thenut engaging portion thereof, and in some instances can not be conveniently located therein.
It is therefore one of the objects of the present invention to provide a wrench with the socket and handle secured together by driving an axially ,located portion of the socket into engagement with the handle socket.
A more specific object of the invention is to apply this ty e of securing means to wrenches of the type wherein it is' diilicult or impractical to have the displaced portion inside the nut engaging portion of the Other objects and advantages will appear as the description of theinvention proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings I'have illustrated the invention as applied to wrenches of the type wherein'it is difficult or impractical to locate thedisplaced poi tion of the socket inside tl'ielnut'engaging portion thereof. ltwill be understood however that the means which 'Ipropos'e may be applied if desired to socket wrenches of the type shown in my copending application above identified.
Figure l of thedrawing is a part sectional view of one form of wrench, with my invention applied thereto;
Figx2is a part sectional view of another form of wrench;
Fig.8 is a sectional view on the'line 3-3 ofFig. 2; 'i
Fig. 4 shows the invention appliedto a different type of tool; and
Fig. 5 is a view of another application of the invention.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the
socket 1 comprises an elongated body portion 2 having a nut engaging socket 3 in one end thereof and a handle receiving hole 4: near the other end, with the aXis of the hole crossing the axis of the nut engaging socket, andwith a large body of solid metal between the bottom of the nut socket 3 and hole 4. A handle 5 comprisinga bar or rod is inserted in the hole 4 and secured against longitudinal or rotational movement relative to the socket by driving a substantially axially located portion 6 of the socket intoengagement with the handle.
Figs. 2 and 3 show a different application of the. invention wherein a short socket 7 has the nut engaging portion 8 extend as far into the socket as possible to provide a deep nut engaging portion. The hole 9 for the handle extends through the base of the sock et at right angles tolihe nut engaging portion and the handle 10 may project as at 10 intothe upper end of the nut engaging portion making it substantially impossible to secure the socket on the handle by displacing a portion from within the nut engaging socket. In this embodiment of the invention therefore the portion 6 at the top or base of the socket is indented to drive the metal of the socketagainst and into the handle 10 to secure the socket against longitudinal and rotational movement on the. handle.
Fig. 4: shows the invention applied to the T shank of a wrench or other tool. In this embodiment the shank 11 may be provided with an enlarged 'head12 through which the handle receiving hole 13 passes at right angles to the shank. A handle 1st is passed through the hole 13 and secured against longitudinal or rotational movement relative to the shank by an axially located portion 6 of the head 12 driven into engagement with the handle. The lower end 11" of the shank may be squared to fit into a socket or other tool for turning the same.
Fig. 5 shows a wrench 15 of comparatively small size similar to the wrenches shown in my copending application above identified, in which the nut-engaging portion 16 is of such a small diameter as to preclude a punch of suflicient size to withstand the driving strain thereon being inserted therein. In this application oi the invention it is therefore desirable to use a larger size punch and drive a portion 6 from the top or base of the socket into engagement with the handle 17 to hold the socket against longitudinal or rotational movement on the handle.
I have illustrated various applications of 7 my invention 1n the accompanying drawings which are to be taken solely by way of 11- 7 lustration and not by way of limitation as various other applications of my invention can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1; In a socket wrench, the combination of a socket member having therein a nut-engaging socket and a handle-receiving hole, said handle-receiving hole being located within the base portion of the socket memher with the axis of said hole crossing the axis of the nut-engaging socket, and a handle inserted in said hole and held against longitudinal and rotational movement therein by an integral axially located portion 01': the socket member driven into engagement with said handle from outside the nut-engaging socket.
2. In a tool of the type described, a turning member and a turned member, means at one end of the turned member to cooperate with a part to be turned, and means at the other end of the turned member for securing the turned member and the turning member together comprising a hole in the turned member into which the turning member is inserted, and means to prevent longitudinal and rotational movement of one of said members relative to the other, coinprising an integral axially located portion of the turned member driven into engagement with the turning member from the end opposite the means to cooperate with the part to be turned. a In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature to this specification.
