The object of the invention 1s to provlde a convenient and effective construction comprising axlesand wheels and axle bearings and means forengaging the axle bearings.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 10, inclusive, A, A are axles, B, B are wheelshaving hubs, B surrounding the axles. C, (l are angle plates extending along theside's of the car frame and across the axles. Each such plate has a horizontal flange, C ,bearing against the lower face of thewooden bottom flooring, D;
and each such plate'has a downward-directed flange, (3?, which is notched from belowvto receive the axles. In the form shown in the drawings, the horizontal flange, C is curved upward at C above each axle. The lower face of the wood bottom, D, is cut away to make room for this upward extension of the angle plate. The purpose of this arrangement is to bring the car bottom lower than would otherwise be the case.
D is a part of the upright side wall of the car body. The body of the car may be of any desired construction, the wood bottom being secured in any desired manner, as by means of bolts, D extending through said floor and the horizontal flange, C of the angle plate (Figs. 1 and 6).
The axle box body, E, surrounds the axle under the horizontal flange of the angle plate. Between its ends the upper face of said box has a transverse horizontal nearly straight ridge or summit, E resting against thelower face of the flange, C of the angle plate. Said lower face is provided with a recess or groove, C in which the ridge, E rest-s. Said ridge or summit is transverse to the axle and forms a line on which the axle box may relatively rock on said flange of the angle plate, this feature contributing to making this a self aligning axle box such as is already known in this art. A strap or stirrup, E extends around the axle box and has its ends secured to the lower face of the flange, C by means of bolts, E At each axle box has a lug, E which, by engagement of the strap, limits endwise movement of the axle box. The upright parts of the strap come close to the sides ofthe axle box; but the lower part of the strap is curved downward away from the lower face of the axle box, as shown in Figs. 3, d, 5, 8, 11 and 12. Thus the strap allows some down ward movement of the axle box relative to the car body. This is for the purpose of permitting the wheel to move downward when the car is passing over a depression in the track at that side of the car. But such downward movement is at all times limited by the strap.

Within said end a channel, E, is formed in the face of the wall which is next to the axle. This channel is to receive felt or other packing material adapted to prevent the passing of oil and dust or cinders.
The opposite or outer end of the axle box has no end wall formed integral with said box. A ring, E surrounds the axle and bears against the endof the box. The main part of said ring is in a plane transverse to the axle. Next to the axle said ring has a flange, E directed toward the opposite end of the axle box. Said ring also has an outerv flange, E", which extends over apart of the outer face of the box. Parts, E of said flange are bent into a circumferential chan nel, 1], formed on the outer face of the axle box. By this means, said ring is removably secured to the axle box.
In the space around the axle and within the axle box are anti-friction rollers, F, placed parallel to the axle and having at each end a small journal, F At the outer end of the bearing the flange, E of the ring, E prevents the rollers, F, from moving out of position by movement toward the axis of the bearing, when the bearing is removed from the axle. At the opposite or inner end of the bearing, a retaining ring, F surrounds the axle and extends between the axle and the adjacent journals, F said ring being so proportioned as to preclude movement of the journals, F towardthe bearing axis for the dislodging of the rollers when the hearing has been removed from the axle.
A second ring, G, is placed against and secured to the outer face of the upright part of the ring, L Said ring, G, has a flange, G directed toward the hub, B of the wheel and fitted closely to the axle to prevent flow of lubricant out of the bearing box along the face of the axle.
Between the inner end of the wheel hub and the outer face of the upright flange of the angle plate is placed the removable thrust wall, H, surrounding the axle. The thrust wall, H, has an inner face adapted to over-lap and bear closely against said flange, C of the angle plate.
Between the wall, H, and the adjacent end of the wheel hub any desired number of washers, H surround the axle. The wall, H, has a flange, H approximately concentric to the axle and extending outward over the washer or washers, H and around the adjacent end of thehub, the diameter of said flange being suflicient to leave an annular space between the flange and said washers and the adjacent outer face of the hub to receive packing to prevent the passing of dust and cinders and to hold grease and other lubricant. Said wall also has an annular flange, H extending into the opening in the flange, C of the angle plate and surrounding a part of the flange, G which, as abovedescribed, fits closely around the axle. (Figs. 8, 8, 11 and 12.)
It will now be seen that wheel thrust parallel to the axle and toward the car body will be taken by'the thrust wall, H, and transmitted by the latter to the upright flange, C of the angle plate, (l. Thus the bearing box is left free or floating on the axle and is entirely free totake the rocking movements above described and to move end wise to the extent permitted by the angle plate flange, (l and by the lugs, E, and by the collar, r on the axle at the inner end of the axle box. (Figs. 3, 8, 11 andl2.) Said collar may be omitted.
The outer end of the hub, B has two diametrically opposite notches, B which are adapted to be brought into alignment with the transverse axle aperture, A for re ceiving a cotter pin, A, which will serve to prevent rotation of the wheel independently of the axle, whereby the wheel is made fast. N ext to the outer end of the hub, a sleeve, A, surrounds the axle and is'secured thereto by a transverse cotter pin, A. This sleeve, A bears against the adjacent end of the hub. the cotter pin, A is removed.

The wheel, B, is chambered at B to receive lubricant. Adjacent each wheel, B,

On the outer end of the pipe I, is fitted any suitable device adapted for recelving and transmitting lubricant into said pipe' This may be a nipple or screw plug, P, of welldrnown form for comiect on'n'itli a grease gun. The orilice, C is to be large enough to allow the pipe, I, to move to the extent demanded by the rocking or other shifting of the free or floating axle-box; andsaid orifice is to be far enough away from the adjacentaxle to bring the end of said pipe out ofthe range of the adjacent wheel, B, in order that lubricant may be in ected into the axle box w1thout passingbetween'spokesor other openings in the-wheel and without'the necessity of turning the wheel into any particular position on the axle. This provision will be a matter ofinuch convenience in the operation o1 such .cars. At any time whenthe car is stationary, lubricant'inay quickly be injected into the four axle boxes without regard to the positions of the wheels on their axles.
Turning now to Figs. axle box, E, surroinids the end of the axle, A, and the angle plate, C, is reversed so as to bring its downward-directed flange, C to theinner part of said plate, and the wheel, 13, surrounds t-heaxle opposite thev inner end of the axle box, the flange, C extending between said box and said wheel. The wheel hub, B extends'inward across the collar, A and said end of the hub is provided with two diametrically opposite notches, B which are adapted to be brought into alignment with the transverse axle aperture, A, for receiving a cotter pin, B hen the cotter pin is in position, the wheel, B, is fixed on the'axle, and when the cotter pin has been removed, the wheel is loose on the axle.
The thrust wall, H, is placed between the hub, B and the angle plate flange, C as in the preceding tiguresot the drawings. The strap or stirrup, E and the lugs, E, are present as before. The rings, E and G are present as before. The outer end of the axle box extends across the e-11d olfthe axle and presentsan end wall, E surrounded by an annular channel or recess, E", which receives the journals, F of the rolls, F. An oil plug, E is tapped into the Wall, E, to form a port for the admission of lubricating oil or grease. Thewheel, B, is chambered for oiling as in Fig. 3 of the drawings; but tlllSClldlllbGl'lllQ is not shown in Fig. 11.
