Each end portion 1 of a railway car axle 2 is reduced in diameter and a sleeve 3 on each end of the axle is seated against the shoulder formed at the inner end of said re duced portioiirl. Seated against said sleeve 3 is the large end of the cone or inner bearing member 4 of a conical roller bearing. A spacing ring 5 is mounted on the axle against the small end of said cone 4 and the small end of a second bearing cone 6 is disposed against said spacing ring. A locking and adjusting nut 7 is threaded onto the end of the axle to hold said bearing cones in position.
Conical bearing rollers 8 are mounted on each cone, preferably being provided with suitable retaining cages 9, and a common cup or outer bearing member 10 is provided for the two sets of bearing rollers. Said. cup is convexly curved lengthwise of the axle to fit a curved seat formed on the inner surface of a box or seat member 11 of substantially semi- 1 that engage the ends of said rib13, thus preprincipally in venting the inner box 11 from turning in the outer journal box 12.
, A closure ring 15 is secured to the inner end of each journal box'and has a projecting tubular flanged portion 16 encircling the sleeve 3 on the axle. Said sleeve may have an upstanding annular rib 17 disposed in a larger annular recess 18 in the closure ring 15. Said closure ring 15 may be provided with transverse passageways 19 opening into said annular recess 18 and into the interior of the journal box; whereby any lubricant escapin from the journal box along said sleeve 3 wil by centrifugal force, be thrown back into the journal box.
A cap 20 is provided for the outer end of the journal box 12. Said cap 20 may be provided with a removable plug21; and a removable plug 22 may be provided in the bottom of the outer journal box. The outside of the journal box is of any suitable or standard construction to cooperate with the side frame and equalizer of a railway car.
The above described car journal construction permits relative movement as between the car axle and journal box, accommodates canting of the bearings without causing them to jam, and provides lubrication for the members that permit movement and self-alinement of the parts. The inner box member has lugs on both sides, so that it is reversible. The use of a spacing ring between the bearing 00 cones permits accurate positioning of the bearings; since they can be properly located and then a spacing collar of the precise size required introduced. Bearings removed from the journal box can be replaced without 96 change or the spacing collar may be reduced in size to compensate for any wear of the bearings. The outer journal box may be easily slipped off endwise, after loosening the closure ring, making it easy to inspect the 100 bearings. The entire bearing assembly may a bearing cup having its outer surface curved to fit said seat, a bearin cone mounted on said axle and bearing ro lers interposed between said cup and said cone, said journal box being provided with an internal rib and said inner box having end lugs engaging the ends of said rib to prevent rotation of said inner box.

A car journal construction comprising an axle, a pair of conical roller bearings therefor, said roller bearings having a common outer bearing member that is convexly curved lengthwise of said axle, an arcuate seat member having a concavely curved seat portion to fit said outer bearing member, and a journal box in which said seat member is mounted.

A car journal construction comprising an axle, a pair of conical roller bearings therefor, said roller bearings having a common outer bearing member that is convexly curved lengthwise of said axle, an arcuate seatmember having a concavely curved seat portion to fit said outer bearing member, and a journal box in which said seat member is mounted, said journal box being provided with an internal rib and said seat member having end lugs engaging the ends of said rib to prevent rotation of said seat member in said journal box.

an axle, having a reduced end portion, hear ing cones thereon, a spacing ring between said bearing cones, a nut on said axle to hold said cones in place, rollers on said cones a common outer bearing member for said rollers that is convexly curved lengthwise of said axle, an arcuate seat member havin a concavely curved seat portion to fit said outer bearing member, and a ournal box in which said seat member is mounted, said journal box being provided with an internal rib and said seat member having end lugs engaging the ends of said rib to prevent rotation of said seat member in said journal box.
5. A car journal construction comprising an axle having a reduced end portion, bearing cones thereon, a spacing ring between said bearing cones, a sleeve on said reduced portion of said axle against which one of said bearing cones abuts, a nut at the end of said axle to hold said cones in place, rollers on said cones, a common outer-bearing member for sald rollers that IS convexly curved lengthwise of said axle, an arcuate seat member having a concavely curved seat portion to fit said outer bearing member, and a journal box in which said seat member is mounted, said journal box being provided with aninternal rib and said seat member having end lugs engaging the ends of said rib to prevent rotation of said seat member in said journal box.

A car journal construction comprising an axle, a pair of conical roller hearings on each end thereof, said roller bearings at each end having a common outer bearing member that is convexly curved lengthwise of said axle, a seat member for each outer bearing member having a concavely curved seat por tion to fit said outer bearing member, a journal box at each end of the axle in each of which one of said seat members is'mounted, each of said journal boxes being provided with an internal rib near its outer end and said seat members having end lugs engaging the ends of said ribs whereby rotation of said seat members in said journal boxes is prevented andendwise movement of said axle in said journal boxes is limited.
7 A car journal construction comprising an axle, a journal box therefor, roller bearings interposed between said axle and said journal box, a sleeve on said axle having an annular rib at the end, a closure ring in the end of said journal box having a tubular portion encircling said sleeve and having an annular recess into which said sleeve rib projects and said closure ring also havi transverse passageways communicatin wit said recess and with the interior of sai journal box.
