Description

C. MUNN.
Machines furfiutting Veneers.

NITED STATES COLUMBUS MUNN, OF CAIRO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR CUTTING VENEERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,365, dated July 21, 1874; application filed May 13, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, COLUMBUS MUNN, of Cairo, in the county of Alexander and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Out ting Veneers; and do hereby declare that the.
following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of myimproved pressure-bar and my cutters for forming the croze, chime, and ends of the staves and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same when in use.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
My invention is an improvement upon machines employed for cutting veneers, barrelstaves, &c.; and it consists, principally, in the construction of the pressure-bar, and its combination with the pressure-roller, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
It consists, further, in the construction of the tool employed for forming the croze and chime, and for cutting the staves to length, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a bar, which is constructed, preferably of metal, in the form shown, and is provided with suitable openings a and a, through which may be passed bolts B and B for attaching said bar to or upon the head-block 0. Within the lower side of the bar A is formed a half-round groove, to, that corresponds to and receives a metal roller, D, said roller, at its ends, being prox'ided with journals d that rest within suitable boxes E, which are attached to or upon said bar. The diameter of the roller D is such as to cause its axis to come directly over the cutter F, in which position said roller holds the wood firmly in place while being removed from the log, and prevents splitting or checking of the veneer, while the bearing of the upper side of said roller within the groove a prevents the same from springing away from said log.
When employed for cutting barrel-staves I make use of two tools, G and G, for cutting the croze, chime, and ends of the same, said tools being provided with cutting-edges g and g that have the exact configuration of the ends of a stave, and at one operation will cut it to length and form the croze and chime upon each end, such arrangement enabling one manipulation of said stave to be dispensed with. Each cutter G is passed through the slotted shank of a bolt, H, the head of which latter is contained within a T- shaped groove, A, that is formed longitudinally within the face of the bar A. A nut, it, placed upon the threaded end of said bolt, enables said tool to be so firmly pressed against said bar as to insure its position thereon.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is 1. The pressure-bar A, provided with the semicircular groove a, in combination with the pressure-roller D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The cutter G, constructed as shown, and adapted for use in completing at one operation the end of a barrel-stave, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of May, 1874.
OOLUMBU S MUNN. IVitnesses:
W. H. MoRRIs, A. L. PITCHER.
