Description
n. osnzfl. Machine for Cutting Heads fob Barrels.
Pa tented jan. 26,1875.
Inventor it 1e ses UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO OSTEN, OF NORTH BEND, OREGON.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR CUTTING HEADS FOR BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 59,114, dated January 26, 1875; application filed November 18, 1574 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO. Os'lEN. of North Bend, Coos county, State of Oregon, have ther invention or experiment.
My invention relates to an improved machine for cutting out barrel-heads.
In order to describe my invention so that others will be able to understand its construction and operation, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view.
A is a horizontal frame, which is mounted upon legs B. O is a horizontal shaft, which is supported in boxes on the cross-timbers at one end, and midway between the side timbers of the frame A. On the end of this shaft, at the middle of the frame, I secure the headcutting tool. This tool consists of a conical metal head, d, which has its apex or center secured to the end of the shaft 0, so that its flaring or wide end will be outward. This conical head I prefer to construct with a hollow or concave interior. At two or more points in this head I make radial slots 0, and upon the head over each slot I secure a cutter or bit, f, by means of bolts, which pass through the bits and slots, and are firmly held by nuts 2'. This bit is made long enough to project beyond the edge of the conical head, and the projecting portion is sharpened preferably at an angle. The bit can be set out or in, as desired, by loosening the nut t and shifting the position of the bolt in the slot e. G is a sliding head, which is fed forward or back upon the side rails of the frame A by means of a screw, 71,, and crank I. The portion of this sliding head which is opposite the flaring or open end of the conical head is made square, so that a board can be placed against it and the sliding head moved up against the rotating cutters, and a circular barrel-head or portion of a barrel-head cut out from the board. K is a curved clamping-bar, which is operated by a lever, L, from the end ofthe machine.
When the lever L is moved in one direction, the clamp-bar Kis moved out from the face of the sliding head, so that the board to be out can be placed between it and the face of the head, and by moving the lever in an opposite direction the board is secured by the clamp firmly in place, and thus held While the cutters are cutting out the barrel-head.
By this arrangement I am able to cut out barrel-heads with great facility.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The shaft 0, with its hollow conical head d, said head being provided with adjustable cutting-bits f, in combination with the sliding head G, operated by the screw h and crank I, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
2. The clamping-bar K, operated by lever L, in combination with the sliding head G and rotating cutter f, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal.
OTTO OSTEN. [L. s] Witnesses:
JNo. L. BooNE, G. M. RICHARDSON.
