To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CLYDE J GoUeLnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Tubular-Drilling- Derrick Assembl g'of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to towers and the like and more specifically to tubular drilling derrick assembly for oil well clerricks. A j
The primary object of the invention is to provide a connection which may be readily disposed in operative relation to the structural members of the derrick, permitting of quick assemblage and dismembering of the parts in rigid adjusted relation when in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a sleeve or connection for uprights, braces and girts which will be strong and durable and one which may be used repeatedly without the liability of weakening any of its parts.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the views.
Figure l is a top plan view of the sleeve, showing the same clamped about an upright or derrick leg, the latter being shown in cross section.

Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1 and show ing the braces and girt secured in place.

In the drawing, A designates an improved sleeve or connection provided with cars 13 and companion lugs C; D tubular uprights or leg sections; E and F braces and girts respectively for said leg sections and H latch devices for each companion ear and lug for rigidly clamping the braces and girts to their respective ears and the sleeve to the uprights.
The sleeve A which is preferably tubular shaped in cross section may be made of cast steel of a thickness suitable to the purposes or the like.

Longitudinally extending longitudinally aligned slots 10 are formed in each end of the sleeve A and provide means whereby the ends of the sleeve may be rigidly clamped about the derrick legs] The radially extending cars 11, 12, 13 and let which are formed on one side of the longitudinally extending slots 10 have their respective companion lugs 15, 16, 17 and 18 termed onthe opposite side of the slots. The cooperation of these companion ears and lugs will be more full explained in the ensuing description. These ears are adapted to receive ends of the brace members E of the derrick. The ears 19 and 20, having the companion lugs 21 and 22 respectively, are formed intermediate and in longitudinal alignment with the brace ears. These ears are adapted to receive ends of the girt members F of the derrick.
The tubular uprights or leg sections D which fit within the sleeve A are provided at their abutting ends with diametrically aligned recesses 23 which form diametrically aligned holes 2% when the sections are in assembled relation. A bolt or pin 25 is adapted to pass transversely through diametrically aligned elongated holes 26 in the sleeve A and through the holes 24 of the uprights D. W hen assembling the derrick, the sleeve may he slid over the leg section 27 until the bolt 25 seats in the recesses 23, thereby centering the abutting leg section D intermediate the ends of the sleeve A. The elongated hole 26, having its major axis circumferentially of the sleeve A, permits of the bolt 25 being moved slightly inv either direction. in order to align with the holes 24 without moving the sleeve from its proper position. A. nut 28, threaded on one end of the bolt 25 may then be turned into tight engagement with the sleeve A for preventing rotary movement thereof with respect to the up right.
The braces E and girts F are preferably flattened out at their ends as at 29 and provided with holes 30 for snugly fitting over pins 31 formed near the outer end of the ears B. r
The latch devices H each preferably consist of a latch bar 32 pivotally mounted intermediate its ends by a bolt or the like 33 to the ears B. The outer end of the bar 32 is provided with a slot at which is adapted to swing over the pin 31 for preventing displacement of the braces and girts. The inner end of the bar 32 is provided with a lug 35 having an inclined face 36 for engagement with an inclined face 37 of its respective lug C. It can be seen that these cooperating lugs having confronting in clined faces carried by the sleeve and latches respectively provide means whereby the sleeve will be rigidly clamped about the upright.
In assembling, after the sleeve has been positioned about the upright, the braces and girts are placed on the pins of their respective ears and the latch bars are then driven into place by a hammer or the like tool. It can be seen that by this swinging of the latch bar, the sleeve will be rigidly clamped to the upright and the b "aces and girts rigidly held on the pins between the ears and outer ends of the latch bars. When desiring to dismember the derrick, a ham mer may be employed for driving the latch bars from an operative position, thereby greatly reducing the time required for the dismembering operation.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention; but,
I claim:
1. A connection for uprights comprising a sleeve having a longitudinally extending slot formed in each end thereof, outwardly extending ears formed on said sleeve at one side of said longitudinally extending slot, companion lugs for said ears formed on the sleeve at the opposite side of said longitudinally extending slots from said ears and eo-acting means between said ears and lugs for rigidly clan'iping the sleeve about said uprights.
In a tubular drilling derrick assembly, a connection for the uprights, braces and girts thereof comprising a tubular sleeve having longitudinally extending slots formed in each end thereof, radially extending ears formed on said sleeve at one side of said longitudinally extending slots, companion lugs for said ears formed on the sleeve at the opposite side of said longitudinally extending slots and a latch device for each companion ear and lug having a portion for rigidly clamping the braces and girts to their respective ears and a portion for engaging the lug and drawing the lug towards the ear for clamping the sleeve to the uprights. 3. In a tubular drilling derrick assembly, connection for the uprights, braces and girts thereof comprising a tubular sleeve provided with a longitudinally extending slot, a radially extending ear formed on the sleeve at one side of said slot, a lug for said ear, formed on the sleeve at the opposite side of said slot and co-acting means between said ear and lug for rigidly clamping a brace or girt member to said ear and drawing the lug and ear towards each other for clamping the sleeve to an upright.

In a tubular drilling derrick assembly, a connection for the uprights, braces and girts thereof comprising a. tubular sleeve having a longitudinally extending slot formed at one end thereof, a radially extending ear formed on the sleeve at one side of said slot, a lug for sald ear, formed on the sleeve at the opposite side of said slot and a latch member pivotally mounted on said ear adapted to engage said lug for rigidly clamping a brace or girt member to said ear and the sleeve to an upright.
5. In a tubular drilling derrick assembly, a connection for the uprights, braces and girts thereof comprising a tubular sleeve provided with a longitudinally extending slot, a radially extending ear formed on the sleeve atone side of said slot, a lug for said ear, formed on the sleeve at the opposite side of said slot, a pin carried by said radially extending ear and a latch member pivotally mo-untedon said ear intermediate said pin and lug for rigidly clamping a brace or girt member to said ear and the sleeve to an upright.
6. In a tubular drilling derrick assembly, a connection for the uprights, braces and girts thereof comprising a tubular sleeve provided with a longitudinally extending slot, a radially extending ear formed on the sleeve at one side of said slot, a pin carried by said ear for receiving one end of a brace or girt member, alatch member pivotally mounted on said ear, and cooperating lugs having confronting inclined faces, carried by the sleeve and latch respectively for contacting and creating a cam action where-- by the sleeve is contracted and drawn into tight binding engagement with an upright.
